Recco System

Umm not really cause the reflectors don't always work that well. You always need to go out there with a beacon or else your toast. Don't just relly on recco reflectors.
 
I never meant to say that it replaces transceivers/avalanche beacons. It's an added comfort to have something extra to help people find you under the snow. I know that inbounds avalanches do still happen (but rarely) and considering that I don't ever wear a transceiver for just inbounds skiing it's nice to have around. And if you were to fall in a tree well inbounds, ski patrollers who might be looking for you do take out their Recco dectectors.
 
From the research I have gathered, the above poster is correct that Recco is not that effective. And also not all beacons necessarily even search for the Recco reflectors.

My Oakley jacket came with the Recco System although I can't seem to find anything...reflective. It has the name over what appears to be a pocket and I can't feel anything special.
 
Recco is the best technology we've come up with yet for body recovery in the mountains. It doesn't run out of batteries, so they will find you eventually.

Seriously though, by the time ski patrol gets to the slide, gets their recco detector working and digs you out, you're dead.

The actual recco system is basically an RFID tag or something along those lines embedded into your coat. You hit it with the right frequency, and you get a return signal. Normal beacons will not find them (as far as I know).

No beacons detect recco except for the one specifically made to find recco detectors in coats.
