im trying to convince my rents to upgrade to a Digital SLR such as the D40, however my dad is interested in the higher quality yet not quite SLR cameras, your thoughts would be great, why is SLR special/a good desciion?

if you really like photography or want to get into photography you'll love an slr and never consider anything else again. SLRs give you total control over the image taking process (ie exposure, iso, aperture, sequence, white balance, different lenses) and more. but, you can definently take nice pics with point and shoots. all point and shoots are so good now. sonys have carl ziess lenses and panasonics have lieca lenses. badass. and you can get a lot of megapixel for a little money. however, if you are considering a point and shoot over $600, you should probably just get an slr. i don't understand the point of really expensive point and shoots. size wise, the low end SLRs (like a nikon d40 or d60) are only slightly larger or the same size as a high end point and shoot. but mostly, SLRs are way more fun!

yeah they do, they typically don't have such high frame rates though. one of the main reasons for getting an slr is the versatility you get with being able to change lenses. both canon and nikon have a huge range of lenses for their cameras, as well as third party lenses, like sigma, being available.

with an slr you can get much faster lenses than you will get on a point n shoot camera.

best thing to do would be to get an entry level dslr (which will still take very good photos) and a cheep compact you can chuck in your pocket.

Honestly, just go to best buy, have your dad play around with a nice digital camera, and then show him an d40, xti, xsi, or whatever dslr's are there and I'm sure he'll be able to decide for himself.. And if he still wants a digital, have him talk to one of the stupid employee's.. they usually don't know shit but they know that DSLR's look better and are more expensive, so they'll probably try and convince him to get one of those.

not all megapixels are created equal. Manufacturers wow consumers with high counts on P&S's but they just don't look as good. Also He'll never be able to shoot action well, they just don't think as fast and lag.

D40 is not junk and comparing it to a 40D is like comparing a Subaru STi to a Lambo--they're both dope cars, just at different levels.

One thing about the D40, and all Nikon DSLRs, is they have far superior kit lenses to Canon. When you're buying a "low-end" DSLR it's usually coming with a lens as a package and the Canon kit lenses are like toilet paper tubes compared to what Nikon puts out. That's not to say Canon doesn't make good glass, you just have to put out for it.

It seems the above comment is based more on Nikon vs. Canon bias, which is probably more ignorance than anything. While Canon is more prevalent in the ski industry, many notable photogs use Nikon. Blake Jorgenson, Flip McCririck, and Alex O'Brian come to mind. And right now the D700 and D3 are THE cameras to have for sports photography. The Canon 5D does take better shots, but really is only useful to the photographer doing landscapes.

The D40 is killer choice for the beginner photog. Ken Rockwell can use any camera he wants, and he constantly raves about the D40. You can get it with the 18-55 kit lens for about $400 these days.

From what I've heard the 18-55 IS lens that now comes with most Canon kits is far far superior to the old 18-55. Should be noted.

Yeah, it's solid. But the speed and low-light capabilities of the D300, D700, and D3 make them better for ski photography. The whole Canon vs. Nikon debate ebbs and flows. I think Nikon is on top now, but who knows in 6 months. They're both good and both will do what you want. Basically you need to just pick one and go with it. But the D40 kit for about $400 is by far the best entry level DSLR deal out there right now. Sure it's a couple years old and 6MP, but read that Ken Rockwell review. You can get a magazine cover shot with a 6mp camera, so I think it'll be a pretty relevant camera for most people for a long while yet.

Controlling depth of field
controlling shutter speed
different lenses
no shot delay

get the D40x more megapixels

ive only used it once for less then an hour, and it wasent very good, supper slow af, and frame rate, the screens getting small nowadays, but the 5d mark 2 thats going to be coming out soon...

and the d700 was relised to soon, infact they recaled it, to many problems.

but any way, canon just relised the xs, so xti prices should fall, i would go with that.

and any nikon under the d80 (d40, d40x, d60, d70, d50)isint very good, kinda a soccer mom cameras, destined to be set in auto for life.

the thing with slrs is that there is much more manual control with them the manual focus is great for macro on a subject

i just got the sony a200 in june and i love it, its a good starter camera in my opinion and it the same price as the d40 or canons rebel but you get much more

does anyone else hate when rich girls get DSLRs for taking pictures of them and their friends doing nothing, and your like you dont need a fuckin dslr just get a point&shoot
