Reason 1:not to ski w/o poles

With all of these threads this year convincing people to ski with out poles...beware...It fucking sucks to fall in deep pow and get up without poles....

So I was skiing through the trees w/o poles this weekend...I'll admit it works on your balance and is a blast...But then I hit a well and ate it hard and deep...I was facing down a steep with my skis uphill and under deep....I couldn't really move my legs cuz everything was tangled up and covered in snow...where I jst may normally pop my skis off with a pole and kinda swim myself up, I couldn't...what may have normally taken 5-10min of medium work to get up, took like 25-30 with hard work....And I really couldn't stabilize myself to put my ski on...It fucking sucked and I'm not gonna do it again unless its a small area...I also felt so bad about leaving such a crater in a tree spot...

Skiing without poles is for park and groomers. People die because they can't get out of treewells.

I was expecting to open this, skim your bullshit then call you a fucking retard for making a stupid thread like what I was expecting..

But it's not what I was expecting so I was pleasantly surprised, ya, I'd imagine that would suck. I dropped my poles once in a situation like that (I never put em around my wrists) and it sucked.

another reason: a few days ago i had such a gaper moment and felt like such a tool. so im in line, waiting for the chair, just standing there with a couple other dudes. i feel my skis start to slip a little bit- it was barely an incline at all but i start sliding forward. im in a crowded lift line so there are skiers right in front of me. i try to pizza, try to pressure my tails, to stop. but nothing doing. i slide right into a skier standing in front of me (sorry dude, if you're on here), my left ski goes between his skis, and i just bump right into him. "shit, sorry dude. lost control." he has to lift his ski over mine to untangle us. he mumbles something about "get some poles dude" and i dejectedly slump onto the next chair. it was not cool.

and another reason: traverses of any kind pretty much blow.

yeah im not going to lie i got caught in like four - five feet of powder and lost a ski and it was hard work without my poles. but if i'm not in powder. which is a lot considering i live in minnesota no poles is just so much more fun.

So you might have had a good argument there but then you said it takes you 5-10 min to get out off a fall in deep powder. So maybe you should just work on increasing the size of your twigs.

Oh and don't fall.

and skis work better for finding skis then poles.

and poles are just another thing to help you get stuck in a tree well.

so yeah every argument in this thread sucks.

now real reasons would be along the lines of...

poles are great tools for stabing gapers with.

you look like a tool in a lift line with out them.

traversing with out them sucks

Candide would not be able to spin with out them

Aid in defending yourself against a yeti

and finally

easy way to get attention before you show everyone just how rad you are.

but no poles pow is fun.

but w/ poles pow is fun.

park no poles is fun.

park w/ poles is fun.

shredding the gnar (not soft snow) without poles kinda sucks. but is still fun

with poles is fun

moral of the story:

Skiing is fun no matter if you have metal (or bamboo) pipes in your hands.

the few times ive gone no poles i always crash into people in hte lift line cause its always on a slight incliine

hahha me too and i always fall over to the side lol, the poles arnt there to stop me!!!! ahhhhhhh!!!!

if its icy and really hard to move i just take one ski off and put it on before i get on the lift, but i usaull ski with poles, i just didnt have any those days

Well...I'm 6ft...200lbs....I think I'm alright...but for the same reason that fat skis float so well, they are difficult to get out (especially my 186's)...that 5-10 min includes giving the sigh of shame...finding your goggles...ruining your fog resistant film in your goggles cleaning them out with your glove...finding your ski...trying to put your ski on...trying to put your ski on...trying to put your ski on...then shaking the snow out of your jacket...then your crack...then getting going...

i think the 2 main reasons poles were invented were stated in this thread. #1: to stop. #2: to get up. perhaps that's why there's poles in the first place???!?!? haha... anyways. hitting the park = toss the poles. not hitting the park = strap 'em up good 'n tight

nr1 reason for skiiing without poles:

for better grabs and grip

.

yeah that sucks dude, pow w/o poles is def super fun, but yeah it can be tricky. it really sucks though to go no poles in skied-out trees. thats hard and no fun

I used to think no poles was retarded but i finaly did it today to try octos and i didnt realize how much more easier it was to throw your body, grab, and butter n shit, It seriously helped me so much. Im not gonna just start skiing no poles now tho

try skiing without the straps, or just loop it around your whole hand. it's a little more dangerous with your hand all the way through the strap, but i don't think it will tear an arm off

also skiing without poles makes grabs easyer=tweaking off you ski in the air for those of us who are not used to it

just grab the fuckin tree. i had a similar situation the other day. i grab the tree- because its a fuckin tree well. thats what you do when u hit one and you should kno that. Its the same with anythin else in skiing- if the snow slides get the fuck out, if you lose control off a jump-avoid a backward twisting fall, etc its all instinct.

I didn't fall in the well....I hit the well, kept my core going forward, and tried to kick my legs forward to power through it...then ate it...Didn't fall in the well, jst really deep heavy powder...

Haha, thats funny.

Accept if it happened to me.

I love how the two girls are just standing there looking.

But thats why when I ski with poles, on the chair lift I always tuck them under my legs.

it's funner skiing no poles

i wouldnt dream about skiing pow with no poles, i cant see the benefit of not having them, traversing would be a nightmare

Fail to see how poles help you if you're face deep in a tree well.

And I even tried no poles a few times last year to see what the hype was.

Its sloppy, and makes the skiing that I do damn near impossible.

Its like mono skiing, or snowboarding in alpine boots. Its the worst of both worlds.

Keep it in the park, I don't care.

Thats different...there board doesn't come off and get lost...all you have to do on a board is push on the binding then it comes off...and the have 3 times the surface area to strap in on...boarding in powder is way easier than skiing in powder....
