So.... a few Americans were tortured during the gulf war by Iraqis. They were awarded around 1 billion dollars in compensation, but now a group is trying to block them getting paid? Who the fuck would block funds from our war heros? These people were tortured while fighting for our country, so how can anyone try to block this?

oh, by the way, it's the Bush Admin that is trying to block the people form getting hte money.

Please, could some people try and defend this? I'm waiting for anyone to try and defend this.

yeah man, thats not right to be trying to block the compensation... although I think the american government has better things to do with a billion... (but don't get me wrong, them getting a reasonable compensation sounds very appropriate)

I'm sorry melvs but one billion dollar is an outrageous ammount to receive for being tortured. If it was 100 million then I would understand where you are coming from, but one billion dollars is way too much money to receive. Thats enough money to have everysingle person in your family not to have a job for the rest of their lives and make sure that their kids will be multi millionaires for the rest of their lives also.

I'm not saying it's a lot. The gov. isn't saying pay them less, they're saying DON'T PAY ANYTHING.

next?

I understand the where the White House is coming from, the new Iraqi government cant spare a Billion and aren't the ones at fault, but I mean come on, give the guys their cash. Sure a billion is a little steep, but there is no reason that shouldn't get the judgement. I think the court will side with the Vets.

we cannot spare 1 billion dollars. plain and simple, we can't do it. yeah i agree that they should have some form of compensation, but 1 bil. to be devided amongst a small group of people just because they were injured? that's unrealistic. we (meaning EVERY single U.S. citizen) already owe approx. $7,500 to the national debt. btw, the national debt is in the trillions of dollars and IS our responsibility as citizens, allthough we'll probably never have to pay it because the US will probably just keep shrugging off it's debt to other countries because we think we should own the planet. do you want to see that number go up? i sure as hell don't. again, we simply can't afford to pay them that much money. what ever happened to the storng patriotism that these people had going into the army/navy/marines/air force? it was their choice, and most of them WANTED to do something about terrorism. i'm not saying it's their fault they got injured at all, but just that it's unbelievable that they expect to be payed 1 billion dollars for doing their job.

well, here comes the ''you're an unpatriotic asshole comments''.

okay, but being from Iraq, that makes it worse. we want to put their new country in debt because our soldiers who destroyed their cities got injured? i'm kind of lost on how that makes sense. i'd love to hear some reasoning from the 'give them the money' side of it though.

ok, I'll try to make this as clear as possible.

after the gulf war, the US froze 1.7 billion in Iraqi assests. These vets were to be paid from these assests. Now, the Bush admin is saying that these are no longer assets but funds needed for rebuilding. The vets were awarded this in a court of law. I think they are entitled to the money. So does the US Legal system.

-Pat

okay, that makes a bit more sense..i thought you were trying to point out that the US was trying to give the vets money out of nowhere and some group was trying to stop them. i also thought that you meant just the current Iraq war/conflict.

No Melvs, you're wrong. The Republican party supports the troops, and Bush cares way more about our soldiers than any of those liberal hippy pussies. If you were right, than anyone who voted for Bush because he was 'strong on terror' would be a fucking moron who believes propoganda disseminated from Rupert Goebbels and deserves to be sterilized. And we know THAT isn't the case.

We have an old saying down on the bayou....Blehhhhh!!!

if im not mistaken if you have a son daughter wife or husband who died in iraq you recieve 250,000 which i think is good hearted but theres no way we can spend this money and afford to run a war. bush is just running down the countries debt i know nothing can replace a life but i think this is a little overkill...but hey just my opinion what else do you gusy think

So Bush supports troops. I agree, somewhat. I could make the typical argument about the whole not giving enough funding, but I don't feel like even touching that.

However, defend what he's doing here g-dawg. even us Liberal hippie pussies think vets should be given money, ESPECIALLY in cases like this.

Care to give it a 'spin'?

-Pat

yeah its kinda ridiculous. people deserve some compensation for their efforts for sure. especially when your efforts get you tortured.

humm. i wounder why that is. maybe it is becuase we are ina war that is not needed for us to be in. imagine how much money we could spend locally if we didnt go to fucking war.

if your message ain't shit, fuck the records you sold cuz if you go platinum, it's got nothing to do with luck it just means that a million people are stupid as fuck

ooo goody politics. 1 billion dollars is a reasonable amount assuming this is being divided by a large number of people... like 2000 at least. If the number is any less than that than 1 billion is outrageous. I would also like to say that as much as these guys were 'heros' they weren't fighting for your beloved america since america has no place randomly going in and bombing countries just because of a terrorist attack that came from a DIFFERENT country called AFGHANISTAN. All though i think that now that it's all over this has been a good thing since saddam is a bastard and needed to be kicked out.

1 billion is too much, but they definitely should get paid. but then shouldnt the families of soldiers who died get that much. they gave even more fighting for their country.

JC_dunn.... for the record, this was during the GULF WAR. also, just stop talking. you're not doing anything but looking stupid.

okay, without even reading the commments I'm pretty sure that someone has picked up on the fact that there were Americans brutally torturing Iraqis' in the war going on right NOW. The Iraqis' were rewarded nothing for their troubles, instead they were continued to be held prisoners (I think). Yes, torture is extremely wrong and in-humain, but it's all in prespective, you could be the evil Iraqi or the Evil American.

This has happened before The World War 1 vets were promissed a Bonus at the end of the war. once the war was won the pay date kept on being pushed back. eventually with the great depression alot of them went to Washington to protest. The real army was sent out to stop these depressed poor war vets and many of them were injured, imprisoned, or killed.

shit like that happens.

if anyone is interested in doing more search on this it was called the Bonus Army.

'humm. i wounder why that is. maybe it is becuase we are ina war that is not needed for us to be in. imagine how much money we could spend locally if we didnt go to fucking war.?'

I think its more along the lines of the baby boomers retiring and empting the bank account for the rest of us, not so much the war in Iraq. Dumbass, do you even know how it works. Those who work now pay for those who are retired now, pretty soon there are going to be a lot more retirees, effectively wiping out all funds. So social security would be dead, and that is bad, can you understand that? The money for Iraq is not the same money for social security.

Ahhh... it has been a while, I have to get my legs back under me.

In 1937, The president of the Domincan Republic slaughtered countless Haitians. It was called the 'Cutting' because he ordered his soldiers to use machetes instead of guns so that it would look like the farmers committed the act. The Dominican Republic government only paid about 25,000 dollars in reparations. Most of the Haitian families received nothing from it. A billion dollars, hmm...

This wouldn't be the only time that a corrupt government has withheld promises. Though, 1 Billion is extreme.

I can remember a promise of 40 acres and a mule. Yeah, the government really makes good on it's promises.
