read a book or watch a movie?

why do 'they' say that reading a book is better than sitting down and watching tv or a movie?

someone somewhere fucked up big time on this one. i mean, think about it - a large majority of the books you read are fictional novels, so you're not really learning anything... it's not like reading is good excercise... you're just sitting on a couch for a long time.

and yea there are books that you can learn something off of if you read, but there are also educational tv shows and movies out there as well...

so next time your mom tells you to get away from the damn tv and go read a book or something - beat her up.... or something.

Reading exercises your brain more, and the more exercise your brain gets, the easier it is for it to learn. I believe this is refferred to as elasticity of the brain. This is why it is often difficult for housewives to go back to school.

reading increases your vocabulary and strengthens your grasp on the written language, and if you are reading a book you are actually paying attention to it. When you sit in front of a TV sometimes you are just braindead

BURN THE BOOKS!

read....always read. I can totally disapear into a book..everything is so descriptive and the evolution of the characters is way better in a book, it really charges the imagination. I didn't read for a long time, but once i picked up a book again....i read all the time, unless i'm feeling really lazy.

unfortunately I have the attention span of a 4 year old. I just can't sit and read a book. But there are other ways to work-out your brain, like music (listening and playing) and even TV depending on what your watching I guess.

books kick ass....i iwsh i could sit myself down and read more often. but damn you jsut get goin and it's three hours later when you stop. great waste of time, oh and the descriptions.....definately helps you visualize shit. there is a difference between reading to read and reading because you have to. when you have to, it's usually text books, or a school book that sucks. if you get a topic you enjoy or are interested in, it kicks ass fellas. i wanna recommend the book 'Monster' by Kody Scott. he has a new name now but i dunno muslim talk, it has shakur in it though. anyway, it's an autobiography of his life as L.A., California's most notorious gang member during the late 70's and 80's.........it's some crazy ass shit, a must read if you wanna know what drives someone to become a gang member. and just shit that's went down in Cali. it also helps you grasp what it would've been like growing up at that time in south central.

Mike, I'm like you dude. I just can't read cause I have an attention span of a 4 year old.

yeah i enjoy reading a lot, only when its something i choose to read. i never seem to finish a school book because most of them suck. but if you can find an interesting book, it can be much better than a movie.

Yeah i love to read. But i can't sit there for like hours just reading. My eyes get all screwed and i get a headache because all i'm staring at is font. So i go and watch tv.

^Yah, cause the music tells you like what emotions you should have. If an old lady trips and falls on her face it may seem funny, but if the music's sad you can tell that part's supposed to be, well...sad.

reading a book works your imagination....you get to decide all of the extra details, not some director

Ds91260, there IS something you can get faster from a book than from TV... it's called 'gratification'... maybe I could even stretch it to 'intelligence.'

I have yet to see the miracle case of the genius who learned everything he knows by watching The History Channel and TLC.

My parents pulled the plug when I was still in elementary school, and I can't thank them enough for it. Sure, you guys arguing for TV say 'there's so much educational material on TV!' That is true... so tell me, is your favorite show National Geographic? When I'm at a friend's house watching TV with them I see.... reality TV, game shows, stupid-ass sitcoms, etc. etc. etc. ad continuum. The television is not a learning device... never has been, never will be.

I'll always enjoy a good episode of Seinfeld or SNL, but there's no way in hell I'd actually try to argue that television is 'better' than books. Hmmmmm, I wonder how they got those concepts for TV shows? I wonder what those actors do to learn their lines? Oh wait... they read!

Books rock! Most television today sucks. Movies are sometimes good. But books exercise your brain and are a great way to pass time.

Ethan, you are partially right. I think that most people dont use TV as an educational tool. But common, is reading LOTR gonna teahc you anything? no it sure as fuck wont. Itll teach you that there are magical rings that make you invisible. It may teach you how to read better (in practicing reading) But the fast is that as a medium TV is simply better. It comes down to this in my opinion. In Tv you can show an image, it takes the viewer less than a second to process it and understand it. In a book it takes the reader a page of reading to process and understand the same image. therefore, TV is better as a medium. And neither is used to its full potential.

Reading Lord of the Rings will improve your vocabulary and stimulate your imagination and creativity. You aren't shown everything-- you're forced to use your own faculties to fill in the visual images.

i think many people will agree with me in that i'd rather read a book than watch a movie based on a book. the book can go past the usual two hour time limit, which allows the author to elaborate and give better details about everything. therefore books are more stimulating and, well, always better than movies.

Joel

er, I guess it could stimulate the imagination, but so will a movie... I personally after reading almost a whole LOTR book think that a person shood watch the movies rather than read the books. I hated the books, long, boring pieces of shit in my opinion (my opinions, im not syaing they were) and I fucking loved the movies.

-MiKeE LiFsHiTz-

in a movie you are given what characters look like along with settings and other visible subjects, when you read your imagination makes up what people look like and how things are happening a movie just narrows your imagination i think

Well in a book the author sometimes just explain what everything looks like to you. LOTR is an example. So much damn description in that book.

-MiKeE LiFsHiTz-

sure books force you to 'imagine' what is going on, but really that 'imagination' is just a collection of your own previous experiences and thoughts, they exist wether you're reading books or not. Essentially the same thing happens when you're wathcing TV, you follow the story line and imagine what will happen next and try and predict what will happen next, the only difference is you're imagining something that hasn't happened, something not given to you. Writing a book, or collecting your thoughts in a way in a way that you are not being guided will do much more (for your mind) than a reading a book can.

While yeah, that's what I think, but they way I think isn't (and should never be) an excuse for someone that is illiterate or has very poor english skills. I think once you've come to a point, the learning level you'll get from reading is minimal, the only thing it offers is creative and once you reach that point reading anything of fiction becomes a question of preference.

-Mike

Exactly. Sure itll improve your reading skills and vocabulary...but I have good enough reading skills and vocab. The only reason I read books is cause there is alot in books you cant find in movies or tv, but that is our fault, not the mediums.

-MiKeE LiFsHiTz-

ski_instructor...wow...that was a really good point... i have nothign to say to that...

The only thing about movies I really dislike is that you have no variety with the characters. You're given a person, and you SEE what they look like. Sure, there's certain boundaries in books based by description. But hollywood makes everybody look perfect wherever they are, no matter what they're doing when I would never imagine that while reading.

I like to read. Also, the more you read, the easier it gets to read assigned books/papers. You'll usually be able to read faster and with better comprehension of the material.

You know, for all of you who don't like to read...whatever floats your boat. I never bothered to practice typing properly, so I'm not as fast as I probably could be. I don't have much problem with only being able to type with one hand though. It's fast enough for me, and it gets me through papers and whatever else I have to type.

anybody notice yet that this is a pretty old thread? hehe

man, i've read lotr twice now... and the only thing it did for my brian/vocabulary was it made me and two others wander threw the woods talking all lotr style looking for people while tree planting (we were on a quest to the tree line to help people in our fellowship to plant some trees). there was me - darryl hunt son of bill and some others. we arrived at the rocky knowl where we ran into roddy son of a bitch and helped him get across the stump lake swamp (a wicked place where man does not belong) and into the thick oldgrowth forest of chapleau to burry dead frozen trees.
