How well does this work. Im thinking of taking my coat to a dry cleaners to get it redone. Does it end up working out really well in the end? Does it last?

Some dry cleaners do it better than the stock waterproofing, some don't...ask around to see if anyone knows in your area. Personaly i recomend going to your local EMS or REI or equivalent and buying some of the wash in waterproofing, seems to work the best for me. But if you get a recomend on your local dry cleaner definately go for it because its much easier.

i have the wash in kind that i got at a helly hansen shop. it is a two part system...i tried it last night, seemed to work well.

nikwax makes a down wash that works amazing on puffys. just throw it in the dryer with like 10 tennis balls to puff it back up.

first of all, its not waterproofing that warns out, but the DWR(durable(?) water repellent) coating. The "waterproofing" is on the inside of the coat and is a fabrics that doesnt let the moisture get to the next layer, however lets the jacket get soaking wet. The DWR is on the outside and makes all the water bounce off the fabrics...

You get wet not because the waterproofing is gone, but because the DWR is gone... When there is no DWR left on the jacket, it gets soaking wet(however you are still dry on the inside) and therefore not breatheble. The moisture from your body is condesating on the inside of the jacket and thats why you feel and get wet.

To restore the DWR coating, you should buy a special tech wash or spray works great aswell. I think you can find it in most of the skiing stores. Or any of the sailing/camping stores should have it too.
