in some cases, like in alot of parties, i have to agree with 221 here.

she's at a party, presumably under her own will. we all know what goes on at parties...so what events led up to it? was she flirting alot around this guy, or in general? did she get herself drunk or high, and impair her own judgement? is she known for fooling around at parties? and the thing is, if the rapist was able to do this to her, i guess she wasnt screaming the whole time and yelling out rape or help while or before it was going on...because as 221 asked, where were her friends? if she made a scene about it, then she would have had plenty of help.

i know im basing this on only a little bit of information, but theres two sides to every story...for all we know, the guy could have been a big bad rapist, or he could have been a shy, gullible, but genuine guy who got his signals mixed up took it from there...

There is this girl I know that I really care for that I have been talking with and just hanging out with for sometime now. nope, it's true, I've heard that from many different sources, I could probably find some article that backs it up. It's absolutely disgusting how high the numbers for rape are in north america, i'm not sure if it's 1/4 of women in just the US, or if they're different in canada, but it doesn't really matter. it's too high, and there needs to be harsher punishments, lifetime jail sentence, no chance for parole in every rape case.

i'm not sure if it included harrasment, if so then it would be pretty inacurate, because of so many people pleading sexual harrasment when nothing really happened. as for the developing countries thing, I'm pretty sure its restricted to the US, or at most North America.

for instance, out of the hundreds, or thousands of women i know of, i have only met one that was potentially raped...my friends mom (she had the kid by the way, and they are quite happy). wheres that 1 in 4 statistic? i think that all of you will come up with a similar conclusion to mine, bacause nobody will personally know of 100s of people that are raped, and everyone usually knows of thousands of people.

i just think that statistic has been blown way out of proportion in order to bring a serious issue into the back of our minds.

I see what your saying, but then again you have to take account into where you live. I'm assuming you live in a pretty good area, whereas someone living in some shithole of a neighboorhood has a much higher chance of getting raped, so you have to consider that. also, I'm not really sure what they are classifying as rape. maybe they put in instances where the girl was drunk and felt guilty about it afterwards and claimed to have been raped.

but youve gotta think here, that if a lot of people who live in 'good areas' only know of 1/1000+ people who get raped, then the statistic pretty much has to jump up to 1/1 for women in sketchy areas that get raped in order to make the stat 1/4. that isnt happening, im sorry.

yeah it does need a bit more attention. but on the other hand, is no reason to buy more locks for your doors, get a security system, buy a cell phone, rape alarm, mace, tazer, take a course, etc. maybe it is a marketing scheme to a certain extent? maybe?

all that needs to be done is to get women educated on how not to be vulnerable (ie get drunk and hory at a party).

good point, educating people more would help alot. on the marketing scam thing, even if it is, which I find doubtful, but even so, the issue is getting more attention, which will make people push for harsher punishments for convicted rapists, so isn't it worth it?

in that sense, punishing rapists, yes for sure it is worth it.

but focusing too much on things like rape, and blowing stats completely out of proportion only adds to our negative outlook on life that the media dishes out daily, and threatens our sense of security when it doesnt need to be that way. bowling for columbine anyone? the media focuses wayyy too much on crimes that make good tv (rape in this case), instead of actual news that matters and affects everyone...like smog, threatening the health of millions of people, things like that, and problems in less developed countries that actually take millions of lives...

you make a good point. but still I think I'd rather question my outlook on life if it means I'm exposed to an important issue like that. personally, i thought bowling for columbine had some pretty good points, but pleas lets not start another michael moore thread. anyways, rape is an issue that affects everyone, some people think that if they've never dealt with it personally, or know someone that has, it doesn't affect them. but the simple possibility of it happening to you or someone you love affects you. Bringing an important issue into the spotlight doesn't mean it takes away focus from something equally as serious. when you think about it, how much pointless crap do they put on the news every day? I mean they had stories about janet jackson's breast at the superbowl on CNN. that airtime would have been so much better used if it had been a story about rape, or smog affecting health, or issues in third world countries.
