Mainstream rap has not progressed at all over the years, if anything its gotten worse. The rhymes have gotten more intricate, but its the same old guns sex drugs and money shit. N.W.A., Tupac, and other early thug rappers were sort of original, but I wonder if rap is ever going to progress. It reminds me of the attitudes during McCarthy or after 9/11, where everyone was trying to say "I'm more patriotic than you." Basically every rapper is trying to be more hardcore than the rest, which has led to most rappers being talentless, 2d, static people caught in a lifestyle that is 99 percent bullshit. Rap music has a unique advantage in that rappers can actually get points across to their listeners very well. I'm not talking about idiots like Jadakiss bashing Bush, I would actually like to hear some mainstream rap that has a meaning.

my guess is u just listen to the singles of artists and dont listen to the whole album and if thats the case then your probablly right but to say rap is progressing is the dumbest shit i've ever heard... the greatest rapper of last 5 to 10 years is and was Jay-Z, he has and is still progressing rap more then any other form of musi.c.. for example he stood on stage for 5 mins at summer jam didnt say a word n all u heard was hova hova.. there are few ppl in the world who have that type of power, and b/c power is everything the power of ra is definatly progressing

Wow, standing on stage and silently bragging is progression? Jay-Z is one of the few mainstream rappers I can stand, but this just proves my point once again. Mainstream rap is nothing but macho, bragging bullshit with a nice beat. Underground hip hop is good but its virtually unknown in my school, and it lacks high production and super-catchy beats that mainstream rap has.

this is the attitude that most people have towards rap. and honestly, id say rap music is just that- heavy baselines and crappy ryhmes about cars, bling, and stupid, pointless shit. Rap music is pretty much used interchangably with hiphop, which is wrong. hip hop, especially the underground stuff, is rediculous. i mean, straight up mind blowing. i listen to all sorts of music, all genres, and mostly indie and underground stuff, and i have no doubts in saying that hip hop is by far the most insightful, skillful, and most artisitic genrees of music in the present day. seriously underground hip hop is straight up, insane. nothing comes close. dont beleive me? check out these groups:

Im going to put a third word in for Immortal Technique. He is quite possibly the best MC i have ever heard. His rhymes are increadible, he has good messages, he can tell stories in his songs like no one else, and he has some really catchy beats. Not to mention how on the ball and "real" he is.

Wow Jay-z best rapper! he is horrible. He made a version of Tupacs "me and my girlfirend" which is about him and his gun, and turned it into some bunk ass love song. Yes rap has gotten way worse from the times of Easy-E, Doc. Dre, Pac, and BIG. But you guys are missing the one group that will always be the best for nowadays BONE THUGS N HARMONY

The rap you see on MTV/BET/VH1 is not the artistic and real side of the music. That's just what sells, and the industry has capitalized on it and capitilized on all the rich white boys who wanna pop in they're Jay-Z CD's and act hood.

A LESSON FROM A HARDCORE SMOKER:

you can hardly ever say a mainstream rap beat is terrible. the producers for mainstream rap are some of the best. Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, Kanye West, ?uestlove. What are you guys talking about?

yea no main stream is good, i enjoy some funny songs by ying yang twins, but underground is where its at. everyone at Baby Grande records are real good like AOTP, jedi mind trick(new cd coming out WITH jus allah), outerspace, 7L and esoteric
