Random Thoughts on Weight

This is by far the best jib/urban ski movie I've ever watched.

It brought back something that's been missing I feel like in newer movies:

A sense of danger and consequence.

And, it's edited, paced and filmed (and....omg.....even NARRATED) perfectly in terms of impressing on the viewer what it's really all about. There's a crash segment that is literally painful to watch.....and a real tension builds, the brakes thrown on the whole flick....and it's followed by triumph—not triumph for an individual rider like we've seen in every movie ever to mention an injury/rehab, but for everyone collectively as a team, and not just in terms of riding itself, but the music crescendos, the editing gets frantic, and then REEELLLLEEEASE.

It's one of the few times in YEARS I've watched a ski movie and felt any sort of emotion or even been able to relate/empathize with the riders. It just went so far to show once and for all that you really can't convey experience by talking about it.

This isn't a movie stuffed with shots of kids doing as many possible combinations of spins on and off of dub kink rails that funnel onto a high school football field surrounded by grass, is what I'm trying to say.

I'm also trying to say that stept has now officially gone (over the last two movies) from "really amazing for an amateur jib flick" to, "really amazing professional ski filmmakers".

One last thing, this movie felt more honest and "true to the sport" than almost any other I've seen, and I think it benefits in a HUGE way from the mere fact that there's no "interpretation". What I mean is that the movie is made, top to bottom, by the same few people. There's no filter or barrier between filmmaker and subject....I think all of the best art, in any form, is made by people who use themselves as their own subjects.

Oh yeah, I truly believe the trailer was done last minute as it's really just the intro, and I'll also say that the tone and context of the "controversial interviews" seems to fit and make much more sense. Basically, it didn't come across like pandering to "thug life" or some dumb shit.

Thanks, stept. Don't know what more I can expect from a ski flick, honestly.

p.s. tom warnick is now officially lucas magoon reincarnated after he nollied in the credits and he was sagging so hard his pants fell down and he crashed.

just saw weight like 20 minutes ago, and it was heavy. so much emotion, cinematography & editing was refreshing and different than any other ski movie i've ever seen, even different than network. skiing was money to say the least. really enjoyed it, everyone should buy it and support Stept

Anxious to hear what other people have to say about this movie.....network was seemingly universally loved, and I think this trumped it.

Also, I forgot to mention this little tidbit which I thought was in the same spirit. I bought Weight from Slope Style, a brand new FREESKI EXCLUSIVE ski/apparel shop on main street in Breck, run by a couple of guys that love this sport as much me, you, and the Martini's. I walked by 2 of the urban spots from the movie on the way back. So, this movie was made, distributed, and sold at the retail level by a group of my peers. For all of the negativity and bullshit sometimes associated with this culture, its stuff like that that makes this sport, lifestyle, community etc., so incredible.

I'm sold. If you wanna see some classic macgoon shananigans btw see if you can get your hands on a copy of Rutland. Shits hilarious.

literally just ordered mine, then i come into this thread and read this. awesome. cannot wait.

the music wasn't the best imo. but of course the skiing was unbelievable. Vila and Cam Riley were my favorite parts. I also liked the backcountry shots a lot.

cinematography was amazing. the movie was really well done...not just the skiing, but the entire film start to finish was great. there is a reason why stept is now part of the pro category at IF3, this movie shows why.

Oh yeah.....

P.White. He gets maybe 5 shots and they're HAMMERS. Got me stoked on Afterdark, and thus the cycle continues. $150 down by mid October year after year...

So, i'm just throwin this out there... I'm broke and can't afford to buy anything ski related at the moment. Alex should buy me a copy since the Stept crew is that legit ;D hahaha

If anyone has a chance... Pause the movie when its showing (if I remember right) Tom warnick hyper-extending his knee. Super gnarly looking.

Clayton Vila is an absolute beast, Seany J's urban kink C is absurd, there is no way he should have landed that. Everything about Weight was amazing, and the crash segment is pretty hard to watch, but it keeps you hooked and shows you what these guys are willing to go through, and have gone through, to make this movie.

I actually just moved to ptarmigan with my gal, but I went and watched at a buddies up on ski hill, that's too funny, duder. Well, I'm sure your travels will land you back in breck eventually...give yer boy a shout when you do. We'll send it..and for guys like us, that isn't a ski reference, haha.

And it was! Thanks for the epic shipping (two days?).
I think casual (the OP) put it very well. Couldn't agree more that the pacing, style, and feel of the film was completely on point. Here are a few more thoughts.
Music- Great variety. They hit rap, but went all over the place for other tunes, and it's awesome to see sick skiing edited to something that expands the musical options.
Rails- far beyond just switchups. Weight features some rails that are straight difficult just to clean, and that's more impressive than the easy rail with a bunch of spinning. Lots of unique features too.
First movie that I've bought from Stept, and I couldn't be happier. I don't even hit urban, find myself in the BC more often, and this blew my socks off. Congrats on the effort, guys. Thanks for stoking me out.

Literature can i have your address? Because i am going to have to rob the dvd if i dont see this movie soon

really dug it. wasnt crazy about last years stept flick, which I know is sacrilegious to some, but this was super sick. I also purchased it at slope style, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to support both them and stept. I hope they both continue doing what they are doing for a long time to come.

one of my favorite ski flicks thus far, dudes are killing it. made me really excited about snow, winter, after dark premiere, and life in general. what more can you ask out of a ski movie???

ps im mad stoked for p-whites part. hes never really in many edits but i saw him and hood and immediately he was in my top five favorite skiers. so much stylee

Just putting this out there...he has like maybe 4 shots in the entire film (although they're all very sick)...if you want more pwhite, check out "After Dark", but Weight is still worth the buy.

", but for everyone collectively as a team, and not just in terms of

riding itself, but the music crescendos, the editing gets frantic, and

then REEELLLLEEEASE."

So is this a bukkake flick or what?~

i just meant in general for all his segments. and his shots in the last windells edit too were mad legit

and scott, what are you doing out of regionals?

that is my all time favorite movie. from growing up watching nick and alex ski at cannon mountain to now is an absolutely remakabe thing to have witnessed. when i was 7 i first really got into park just from skiing with nick when he was 14-15. when i saw Road to Nowhere i was shocked. thats really when stept's movies really emerged. and every year since then they have gotten dramatically better. Weight is my favorite because the whole crew really captured the essence of their bonds ant the mutual passion for skiing. also the fact that they went back to where the martinis roots are and where i still ride made it even better.

way to go Nick and the entire Stept crew
