wanna put a rail in my back yard.... thinking about building one out of pvc or buying a metal skateboard one from the store... any thoughts

 
pvc works good. it slides real nice. i haven't had too many problems catching on it, but if it happens, it usually just shaves off a little, and it doesn't damage your skis. i've also used electical conduit. doesn't slide quite as well, but works ok.

 
pvc is smooth, very fast, and will break the easiest.

metal is the heaviest, slower than PVC, but will hold up a lot longer, and you cant bend it if you have a bender... you can also weld stuff together.

my 2 cents... if it is just a little mess around on back yard rail go with PVC... if you are gonna have it every year and expand on it and have it setup big and nice... go with metal

pvc won't rust if your gonna do it every year and its a whole lot cheaper

wut ^^ will a disaster break the pvc or somethin, mab if its really cold out or somethin? jw y never slid pvc jus metal n wood ish.

 
i have only broken one piece of pvc on my rails and that was a small 1/2 inch piece of PVC. I have other 1.5 in pieces that have been disastered onto and held up well. Either way, your talking about 1-3 bucks for a 10ft piece of pvc.. so it doesnt matter if they break. Check out the rail building cult for help.

If you are worried about breaking PVC, put wooden doweling of the same inside diameter, inside of it, so that it will not compress and break. This will also make it easier to drill into, to secure the pipe to a structure better.

Anyone ever considered making a rail out of an old pair of skis or two? That could be interesting. Just a thought.

yea bra i once ina while if i have my rock skis on i will slide a snowboard that is upside down dug into the snow. its cool for like 1 one thousands of a second. but its cool.

 
i have a pvc rail...but i havent tried it yet do to the lack of snow

i wouldn't worry about pvc catching it super slick....unliek that godamn telephone pole at okemo when i went there, it has fingers or sumthing that grap ur skis
