Rails vs boxes

yeah it's a bit pants, and when you do get rails they've always got two stuck to each other so it''s still not really like a street rail. i do enjoy boxes though, i'd just like to take the tricks i learn on them to a real rail.

boxes should disapear from he face of earth, at least, in higher level parks and comps.

they make pretzels manoeuvers look like ski ballet for most skiers. Plus, spinning as fats as you can and doing as many switch ups as you can isnt that great anymore.

i think they are perfect for practicing spin ons and such, but resorts should keep a certain balance on the rail/box ratio for sure. But I would say more rails, its more fun to hit.

haha thats sad, at SR they have alot of boxes now, but they do maintain a good set of rails.

rails are so much funner, box are fun to spin on and off, but just sliding a really long thin rail feels great

boxes are conducive to learning things. I personally enjoy rails but if someone wants to learn how to slide a rail or box they'd much more confidently go into a 2 foot wide box than a 3 inch wide rail.

haha my park has one box and like 20 rails and they got the box las year and are not planning to get more, so basically yo have to practice all the new tricks in rails cause the box is always broken...plus the rails suck cause they haven't changed them since second year the park open back in 2002

But only to learn how to actually slide a rail, or maybe 270 on. For switch-ups or any kind of spinning off they suck. Plus they generally aren't as slippery.

I thought the same way at the start of last year, but wide boxes forces me to try diffrent shit.

Boxes allow you to do so many more things then rails, and can add a whole level to skiing. But people arent useing them diffrently, and treating them as wide ass rails.

Rails should make a come back becuse in the end its alot harder to do something on a rail then it is a box.

Some boxes are ok for maybe trying some new shit, but in the end, rails are far more superior. But... more people can hit boxes so I guess theat's the market. It's odd, too, since boxes are usually considerably more expensive to produce.

They get pretty annoying though, especially in comps, when people just spin like a top and people think its "cool" when in reality its pretty novice. It's akin to the whole thing how gapers go fucking nuts when somebody does a backflip, but are rather indifferent on other things, ie switch corks.

because a lot of people can't really do rails but "think" they can do boxes by going straight on them. I know the group of people I ski with I'm 1/5 that can do rails all the rest can do boxes though. I think making the jump between boxes to rails is just confidence

thats wut she said.

but ya, i used to like boxes more when i was younger and more gaperish. but now i'd rather hit a rail. boxes are useful when learning new things then taking them to rails.

a good ratio of rails to boxes would be like 2:1, maybe 3:1

yeah i was at sugarbush today and they had a few rails and a couple boxes set up. the horrifying thing was that i think i saw a total of 1 legit rail by a skier and probably 20 gaper slides on a 2 ft wide ride on box

hahahahhaha WTF???? what are u saying???

i have resently realized that i fucking suck at rails and boxes. so this years resolution is to get better at that shit.

I used to do that too. I think it's the fact that most are ride on, and that doesn't allow for getting the 90(or whatever spin on) and getting balanced as easily. Sure you can pop like crazy, but it's a lot harder than having a kicker do most of the popping for you and only worrying about the spinning.

Boxes are nice when there's fresh pow on top, though.

Rails are definitely more satisfying, though.

I enjoy both for different reasons. I think people put more boxes in parks because they are easier and less people get hurt on them, but they're still a good time, as long as the still keep the rails around as well.

And it's a lot harder to get hurt on a box then it is on a rail so if anyone tries it they won't die and end up down in the clinic...

i complete agreement that there sould be box's and rails but boxes should never be more than 7'' wide or it loses all difficulty and is really difficult to switch up on..... any wider seems pointless to me!

boxes are easier to learn tricks on and try new things and are overall easier but still fun. rails are easier to spin off and stuff and more satisfying and harder but also easier to keep control

i think the reason is because all of the little groms out there and they al wanna learn, and they think boxes are easier than rails. its bad for us, but good for the sport.

word spinning on boxes, if i fall, it's always slipping out and getting my ass destroyed. on rails though if i spin on and fall i just fall off, never get hurt. fuck boxes in the asshole.
