Rails and your base

I was just wondering if rails actually do kill your skis, and if so what do you do to avoid trashing your 800 dollar skis without needing to take 2 pairs to the hill???

i really hope the answer isnt 'don't grind'

i just use them. i figured, especially twintips, are made to be abused- use themm how they are supposed to be used

i do all that, yet i wont ski over a blade of grass, a leaf, or a pebble.

How many snowboarders does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

10, 1 to do it, and 9 to say 'I can do that.'

yeah, i got some nice skis, and i really dont have any money to spend on new skis every year, two years, even five years....so until i do get a new pair, i'll just stay away from the rails, then i can use my current skis, which will be old by then, for that stuff...i'd prefer to have skis work better all over the mountain, than to suck ass at big mountain so i can do rails

If u need $800 skis then so be it but dont do rails. In fact what twin tips did u pay 800 bucks for. thats kinda a rip off. what i would do is get some twin tips do use on jumps and the pipe. then for rails and abusing skis go to your local ski shop and get some old straight skis that they are selling for like 90 bucks thats what i did

or if you really want twins you could always take a crapy pair of skis (suggested above) and bend the backs. My buddies did this back in the day before twins were out and it worked out allright. I wouldnt suggest you ride on them regularly but they would be fine as a 2nd pair to ruin on rails

its not the base most of the time, its the edges, so detune your edges, you'l hit rails better, easier, and it will slow the untimely destruction of you skis. Also, if you really want to keep those skis, then constantly tune you skis, wax em, and there are some types of epoxies, that might help, don't know how but they will.(a little bit of glue and a lot of hope)

Skiing is the easiest to learn hardest to master. Flip that around and you know how snowboarding became so popular, but will never have the potential that skis will ever have.

i bought pocket rockets...which are $800 bucks canadian regular price, i got them with kick ass bindings for $450 total, but the point remains, they're expensive skis

there are skis that are made to grind ... pow air grind. they got grind plates on the base so it doesnt kill your edge and base.

got a pair to sell very cheap by the way

all you gotta do is round off your edges under your foot. The skis will still hold an edge, even on ice, but because your edges are rounded the rail wont take as much of a toll on them and rip them out as easy. Keep your bases waxed and you should be fine.

'That sucks, you cant do much with that, should have been the rule of wrist!'

My plan is to avoid rails untill I can afford to buy a second set of skis.

or instead of being a dumbass and avoiding rails all together, you can just ski, a dull edge under your boot, isn't gonna do to much except for if your a racer. i dull my edge under my boot the moment I get my skis. try not to land hard on the rail, like a 2 foot drop to landing flat on a rail will most definitley fuck you over, but if you got some speed then your good to go. another option is to just build your own pvc rails you won't reck anything then.

What are you talking about???

PVC works fine! I use PVC rails in my backyard all the time in the winter. If you have crap PVC it will break. Decent PVC will stand up well and you don't even need to use extra support peices unlees you build a 15 foot plus rail.

PVC doesnt ruin your edges and only blackens your bases, which is only a cosmetic issue.

No Mr.Porcupine, I don't wanna see yo weiner
