say i built a frame of a rail out of wood, and attached sheet metal onto the top of it. itd be like a small box. would that work?

alright thanks. i might turn this into a project...or i may not even try it. should i get thick sheet metal so my skis down wear it down, or does it not matter? any help is appreciated.

 
I'm with the sceptics here, I think it might work for a little while but as mentioned earlier, it will rust, and I bet the sheet metal loses shape as it expands and shrinks over the winter due to the changes in temp. Also you will get strange dents that make it uneven when you land on it...

 
It depends on what kind of metal your using and how thick it is. If you use some nice think stainless steal and get someone to drill it so when you scre it in it'll be nice and flush, that'll work.

 
Stainless is more expensive and is harder to shape than regular steel, but it does not rust and will not dent. Stainless dulls real fast but it's a neat metal. Some ski companies are starting to use it on park specific prototypes because it does not crack and does not burr as much.

 
screw metal.. you have sparks and shit.. go tohttp://www.mcmaster.com/ and get some high-density polythylene about an 1/2 inch thick and 4 inches long. then countersink screws tto anchor the plastic (and not fuck up your skis) and you got a good box that will actually slide

my neighbor and i always talk about making rails, we have the space to do it at the c.c where we work and the welders, just never get around to it...definately a good money making business though...maybe next summer

just build 3 T shaped legs, out of 4x4's, then turn em upside down so the legs stick out then put 2 inch angle iron each side, connecting the legs, 2 on each end and one in the middle kinda like this

that would make an ok rail but if i had them spread out so it were more like a box,m would it work?

yea it would work, just as log as you have 2 so there can still be a gap in between as long as theres one on each side. also that is a really cheap rail to make, i did it for under 30 bucks

hahaha, we use mcmaster carr stuff at my work, that stuff is professional grade super expensive stuff
