Rail jams are killing skiing

That video fails to show what i think about the progression of rails, other than being able to do things both ways. I didnt have any footage of me doing presses or brokens or wierd grinds, and i love doing those and think its a big part of the progression of rail skiing.

Maybe you made a point, or drew an interesting comparison in there somewhere. Damned if I going to read all that (an introductory paragraph? really?) to find out. Start a blog.

If you live where theres no vertical and crappy ass snow i can see not hitting rails but If you shred a mountain that's legit and it dumps you better not be skiing rails. Actually i don't care go ski rails on powder days more powder for me

you know you're allowed to film presses and stuff? we believe that you can do all sorts of spins and pretzels, you don't have to show us four minutes of spins to make sure that people know that you can do those tricks.

how have rail videos, actually just ski videos, become checklists? you don't have to do spins and pretzels to prove that you are good at rails, your skills, style, and inventiveness will all shine through so much more clearly if you just think for a minute about what you're doing between each spin and switch-up.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPIN TO BE LEGITIMATE

YOU DON'T HAVE TO PRETZEL TO BE LEGITIMATE

FILMING IS NOT A CHECKLIST

rails are really fun and as everyone said you cant ski pow all year round. At the end of the day when the pow is gone and the mountain is closed i go hike some rails.

dude. have you ever been in a rail jam? its suuper fun man. rail jams aren't killing skiing anymore than any other comp out there. if anything its just showing people how cool skiing is that havent seen it yet. dont be such a hater dude, you sound like a real fag and have no right to hate on something that some people like more than you. what if i hated on powder? powder is so fucking gay its ruining skiing. see not cool. its just an opinion, if you dont like rails then dont make a thread hating on them. keep it to yourself

the point of skiing is not to do what you are "supposed" to do. you are supposed to do what you want to do. there is no rule saying you have to ski pow on a pow day. if someone wants to ski rails they can do it whenever they want without getting hated on on newschoolers.

i think you have to be able to spin every direction and grind every way to be legitimate.......if i see some kid that just does weird grinds because he cant do other shit, i dont consider him a well rounded skier and therefore not legit. You have to be able to do more than just a good press to be good. oh, and for the record, PRESSES will NEVER get you anywhere in a competition. Its SAD, but its true.

oh and that vid is my way of making a fun vid, i made it well before this thread. If you have ever filmed with any company other than your friends makin a fun movie, you'll know that you have to attack everything with a checklist. That edit was not filmed in a checklist, far from it. Those are just tricks i wanted to do those days, so dont get all huffy puffy that im goin out and filming a checklist with my friends. When i film with meatheads and stuff, you need a checklist for BC jumps and shit because you only get a few chances and they have to be worth it. same for urban, you can be kicked out at any moment, so its essential you know what trick your gonna do as soon as you set eyes on a rail or bc jump.

i think what this man means by the 'checklist' is that you do not go to a hand railing or a jump to say 'ok today i will be doing all four 180s on this jump and all four 270 out of this railing to show everyone in my video how excellent i am'

but i do not understand all the other stuff he say it is funny to read

i think thats what the thread creator is trying to say more than anything. its the same reason people hate the sw 10. are you skiing to impress judges or for yourself...etc. i could care less what people do, but i really want to see some spins and swups incorporated with presses.

"and then after i will do all eight 1080 and all sixteen 450 on first on this handrail i will do:

1. ollie left 450

2. ollie lip left 450

3. ollie right 450

4. ollie lip right 450

5. nollie left 450

6. nollie lip left 450

7. nollie right 450

8. nollie lip right 450

9. switch ollie left 450

10. switch lip ollie left 450

11. switch ollie right 450

12. switch lip ollie right 450

13. switch nollie left 450

14. switch lip nollie left 450

15. switch nollie right 450

16. switch lip nollie right 450"

can you not say that after awhile of watching all this in order you can really only think 'i do not care for your stupid mission of doing everything it is the most fuck boring thing i ever watch'

imagine if everybody in the competition did them, or if for once we had not homosexual judges that did not give first place to whoever could do the most 270 pretzels and 450 disasters in fifteen minutes

I am not saying that you were consciously like "ok today I am going out to film with my buddy, I am going to bust out all of my 270s and pretzels," I am just saying that I didn't like what I saw in the video. but that's ok, you can do whatever you want. I'm just going to tell you what I think, an you can do the same.

I believe that when you film with a filming company you have tricks that you want to do, either in the backcountry, on urban rails, or otherwise, and that just makes sense. What I am talking about is merely what I saw in this video. I got bored. I know you were just doing your thing, and just filming with your friends, but it bored me. Sorry. It just sort of surprised me that even you're not filming with Meathead or whatever big old film company you have to impress in order to further your career or whatever is going through your mind, that you still don't venture away from the part of your ski that's under your boot, that you don't do anything besides switch up while you're on the rail, and that there was nothing actually extraordinary in this video. I did kind of like your gap over the down from that rail jam though.

Sorry if you don't believe that this video represents your skiing properly, but if your Meathead footage is you trying harder to do these tricks, then I will probably not enjoy that stuff either.

I understand that some people want to see people spin both ways because it is hard. I just feel like that is not the most important thing. If you cannot acknowledge something as being legitimate because it is beautiful, even if it has nothing to do with spinning, than that is just unfortunate and sad. Difficulty doesn't have to mean how hard it is to complete a maneuver, it can mean how close to PERFECT that maneuver is. It is DIFFICULT to make a tail-press PERFECT. Fucking difficult. Probably impossible. The problem with skiers is that their perception of what is difficult is limited. The pursuit of perfection is difficult, spinning a lot is just spinning a lot, I don't care how much effort you put into it.

You're right, it is a shame that presses will get you nowhere in a contest, but that's not the point. The point is what is given the most appreciation in skiing movies and contests a like is not what is the most beautiful. What is given the most appreciation is what is perceived to be the most difficult, which is really just narrow-minded and not to least extent TRUE.

a lot of you take skiing (and yourselves) way too seriously. skiing is about having fun, so quit getting so worked up about what other people are doing and go do whats fun to you. if you don't like hitting rails, than don't. if you like doing tail presses, than do tail presses, that's cool. but don't come on here and tell other people that what they are doing is wrong, and that they should be doing what you are doing, that's just ridiculous. As long as everyone is having fun doing what they are doing than no one is "killing skiing".

More pow for me to shred. who cares!!!!
Do you really want everyone to ski how you do? Maybe the kids in the park just got into freeskiing and are learning park and are bored of pow, or maybe there stoke factor lies in the park not the pow.

they should close off rails if it snows more than 6 inches. people need to open up there veiw beyond the park

ok skiing powder is great.. but come to the east cost. now pow. but you will go back into the country and make a booter and pull all the tricks in the book..

where else after that? RAILS. Almost everything in the air will be pulled onto a rail. Rails are a big part in skiing.

Tom Wallicsh is NS's favorite over all skier. And because he is. is cause of rails.

Why anyone cares is beyond me. Just go skiing, and if you don't like it, don't do it.

This fuss is just people with too much time and not enough winter.
