Rail damage and carving

I was wondering what people thought about rail damage as it affects carving/general skiing. Personally, I do about 50%/50% in and out of the park, and my edges are decently rounded off under the boot and I don't notice too much loss of edge hold on the rest of the mountain. I just make sure theyre deburred with some various stones. Any input?

skiing the rest of the mountain on the skis i jib on is intense, ive just designated them park skis... theyre beat to shit... and mildly firm snow is like ice

no you dont^^^^ i have 2 pairs and i can never decide which to ride. like one day i might want my mojos because there is some fresh snow, but then by the end of the day the snow is skied off and i want to go to the park, so then i'll want my park skis so i can slide rails and stuff (but im too lazy to go back to the car to get them) so i just whine about it.... hehe its more of a hassle than you think.

I went from my old edgeless 1080's to new Armadas this year and I was carving circles without trying. Yes, i noticed a huge edge diff. It was awesome.

is there a point where the edge gets so worn that its past the help of sharpening?

^ I would think so. Since rails end up rounding them off you'd have to scrape off so much to give it a sharp angle again you'd have no edge material left probably. But yeah, I do notice some diff, just not a huge one, and it's not like im a racer or anything so I just ignore it.

With swapping the skis though, I was thinking about this, and I end up putting most of my weight on my uphill ski when i grind, which for me is the left since i turn to the left when getting on a rail. So the left edge of the left ski is dulled the most. I don't swap mine because I generally think of your inside edge being the one that's more important in a turn, and that leaves my best edges inside. Is this good logic, or not?

ya i have round edges completely but i can still carve well in everything except ice... i just kinda slide my way accross ice.. i guess it helps to teach you to really pick your spots to turn.

I've found a huge difference outside of the park and with an occational sharpen it stays pretty good for a couple days. The simple fact is that your going to round your edges on the rails (I even cracked mine the other day) and if you can slide a decent rail, i'm sure you can ski with a little more difficulty anyway

Just do what crystal-needs-a-park said. it helps.

my edges are scarry turning on ice. espesially turning left. i almost fell off a cat track down a gully cuz my edges were dull and i couldnt turn

about how long can you slide rails before your edges are completely dead

i just sharpen em' up after every time i ride so i dont notice any diffrence and the only thing i mess my edges up is on rocks when im tree skiin

Most people put more pressure on the inside edges when grinding, which is why you should swap them over for carving and such.

One of the edges on my 99/00 Skogens is cracked clean in half and now one half is starting to peel away a bit and drag. I'm going to saw the bad bit of edge off and fill with epoxy - hopefully it will hold up.

I busted my beater/rail skis, so i find myself messing up the edges on my good skis when there is a good rail. bad times

k it doesnt really do anything unless its icy cuz i have about 9 inches of edge gone on my candides and there fine... but i kinda want new skis

Remember, theres no such thing as bad snow! just shitty skiers!

Unless all you do is nose/tail press, your wearing down your edges right under the boot. This isnt the park that affects your carving and all mountain performance. So, it shouldnt be an issue.

Is it possible to have an area of the ski re-edged? I really don't think so, but I'm not sure. Anyone know?

Yeah - you can get pieces of edge or the whole edge replaced, but I'm pretty sure it costs quite a lot. Probably only really worth doing if your skis are in really good condition apart from the edges.

as for having 2 skis to ski i think it would be a good idea to just have screw em in screw em out bindings like line made so you would only have to buy one binding for each ski

If you are east coast it becomes more of a problem. However, I do rails and every now and then just put a fresh side edge on the ski and its fine.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

come on guys,

you have to admit, on the really, really icy days, it's kind of fun to cess slide the entire park and manuver around the jumps. or even doing wall tricks in the pipe. my edges are usually so dull i can't get 'em to hold the walls of our pipe some days anyway. midwest snow does that some times.
