We made a sick rail, its about 9 feet long, super sturdy stand.

However the rail itself is fucked, it was from a school, and when you slide, edges catch REALLY easily. What would be a good coating to toughen it if that is possible.
 
What is the rail made off? If its steal then i dont know of any coating that would work. You could try grinding it down so its smooth again and then painting it.
 
Thats probably the best idea. You could try greasing it but that isn't good for your skis (or your outerwear if you fall!) in the long run.

and then there is this spray for metal pans for non stick

it makes it slide like butter
