rail construction idea

this summer since i don't really do any sports i'm thinkin of spendin some money to build some of my own rails and make em look really cool.

First im just gonna build a straight rail. My idea is to nail two 2x4's together to make the rail strong and sturdy, then once it's put together, i was thinkin of puttin a 2x6 on top of that. That way it would give me a chance to learn some cool rail tricks like doin switch to railslide and 270 to railslide. Also wanna learn how to switch it up while im sliding the rail. My idea for building the rail is kinda hard to make crystal clear but just imagine a sturdy 3 foot high rail with a 2x6 piece of wood being what you grind on. Then im gonna try and find a plastic cover for the rail so im not actually grinding wood with my skis. What do you guys think of that idea, it might be easy to do but for people just gettin the hang of rails and learnin new stuff to do on em i think it would be kinda fun.

Also wanna make a trapezoid rail the same way i am gonna make the straight rail. How long should each side of the trapezoid rail be and how long should the middle be, i kinda wanna make one like in the propoganda movie, how long do you think that one is.

Once i make these rails im gonna paint em up and make em look pretty cool instead of them looking like the typical brown, dirty backyard rails. Do ya's think that's a good idea or will i be just wasting my time?

Ya that sounds cool... cut i personly dont like plastic rails that much.. i thinks its better just to lern on metal if u can find.. but plastic is kool if thats all u can get, have fun this summer

Im gunna do something somilar with wood and plexiglass...

Heres what you need:

2x4's

plexiglas or hard, smooth plastic

screws or nails

circular saw

jigsaw (optional)

Okay. These plans are for a straight rail, but can be modified to create kinked variations. First, you want to buy several 2x4's. for example, If your rail is gunna be 10 ft long and 2 feet high, then get 2 10ft long 2x4's and another 2x4 that you can cut into 2ft high sections. You also need a couple of spare pieces for the 'feet' of the rail. Refer to the diagrams below for the layout. Then simple screw or nail the 2x4's together. Now your half done.

Here are the diagrams:

man thats freaky shit, i had the exact idea in my head as what was in that diagram, exact look and everything.

By the way turener, it's still a wooden rail and i like metal better too but metal is expensive. I was just gonna put a plastic cover over the rail so that i didn't scrape my skis on any nails or pieces of wood stickin up.

go for it man..it works, iv built the straight so far and im goin for a double kink. Get some plexiglas for the sides and sliding surface. It's so smooth and slippery! If u want me to send u a better quality pic of that plan or have any questions, msg me.

im making a pvc slider for me and my wakeboard friends too. its hopefully gonna be 15 feet long and 2 feet off the water. good for learning, after that i might make a kicker and a rainbow rail.

maybe

I am making metal rails in Mechanics class

they look like this

40degrees aint too steep is it? I was originally thinking 30 ..but i 40 looked more correct on paper... dunno why.

my dad just built a bar for our basement, and he used fermica for the top. that shit would be perfeect for a wide rail type thing.

im gonna build the sweetest park this year. il post pics when im done

Metal pipe isn't that expensive. I went to Home Depot and two ten foot long metal pipes that will be perfect for a shotgun rail is under $30.

Metal pipe is free here. All you have to do is pull the top bar off of a fence. I've made like 5 skate rails this way and now im making a 20+ footer for summer jibbin.

you can go to a construction site where they're taking down the fences around properties to put up stores and stuff. so if you ask them I'm sure they'd give you a lot of metal pipes.

i've never made a summer rail. how do you get enough speed to take it? i've heard a skateboard but that doesn't seem like you would get enought speed.

meh..

a welder is making a rail for me. 10ft long 2.5ft high. cost 'bout $100 US...but those other ideas sound cool

i have a great idea for the sliding surface. if you have any old metal bed frames, jut use those. i just got a new bed so i got some and thats what im gonna do. it will be about 3 inches wide.

meh..

just make sure you dont use stainless steel, skis dont slide on it for some reason...you know that metal they use on handicapp railings, i built a sweet rail, and i tried it like 50 times, never moved an inch...it was fucked up...so yeah, stainless steel licks nuts

the only thing wrong with snowboarders is that they snowboard

Huh thanks for the warning skipimp. Hey mauii thanks for posting those plans, I'm building myself a rail this summer because I finally have an ice rink nearby to poach snow from!

no problem.

I can't get ice from anywhere..so i have to wait till winter. What im gunna do is get my friend to weld me a metal rail, then have a straight and a double kinked rail like the ones in the plan. Im gunna build a 5 foot drop-in ramp as well. Im gunna use my snowblower to move all the snow in my yard into my little park and use a compactor to harden and flaten it and shape up some in-ramps. When it's done, im hoping it will look and work nicely, all groomed and shit. I can't wait! I may even build like a mini sharkfin type thing if it snows enough!

were already working on my freinds backyard park for next year, and weve alreay started making rails with crappy, but cheap PVC pipe, were going to cement our rails in the ground, (those 'feet' never woork good)we plan on a kink, super high(6 feet, so i can flip off it), a medium to learn like 270s on, and a rainbow or s-curve rail. we already have the medium one in the ground, cemented in 2 feet of dirt, it aint going anywhere

ummm... you might want to put the rails in at 4 ft. if they're not below the frost line the cemet will heave and you'll have bent rails.

To get speed for summer rails without snow or ice use some astroturf and put soap and water on it. Then put it down a hill.
