So my friend karey (gidget3612) and I are working out plans to weld some metal rails for winter. We both can weld so that's not the problem, but after working out some plans for what we are going to do we have found we will be needing a lot of metal. Does anyone know what metal generally costs per ft.? I have no idea if it's like 1$ per. ft, or 20$ per ft... so any comments would be really helpful. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated as well. Also if anyone has a ratio of length to supports that would be good too because we are trying to use the least amount of metal as possible. thanks.

You can't buy ''metal''. Metal is a broad range of material, steel is what you want to buy. Depending on what you want, it can range in price quite a bit. I built a 22 foot rail this past winter entirely from stainless. The materials were about $1,500 Canadian. I didn't pay for the materials though.

heres the best way:

drive around scouting for nice hand rails in your town, right down their locations. its best if they aren't by any bussy roads. late at night bring a pickup, suv, or van anything that has alot of room and a hacksaw to that location(s) ut out the rail, if its to big cut it in 2 or 3 pieces and you can weld it together later since you know how to weld and bam! a glrious handrail. oh and try to avoid other people who could call cops.

Oh by the way, if you plan on making a rail, using a pipe is generally much cheaper than using flat bar.

Don't use galvanized steel.

we already have two really nice 25ft. flat bars... should we just call a welding shop and talk to them?

Call your local steel shops, see what they can do for you, or even ask them where you can just get bunch of scraps that you can just put together...

we also have access to a lot of small somewhat junky steel scraps for supports, and angle irons etc. so that's going to help out but yeah I think we are going to call up some welders and see what they say, but I am also thinking of calling up talent (skateboarding- they do some of the terrain parks up here too) and asking for some references from them.

I bought 20 ft. of 2.5 inch round steel for around $30.

its a little more th an a buck per foot for steel usually in the US, depends on the diameter.

noooooo. no galvanized. glavanized steel gives off poisonous gas when you weld it, not good. if you really do use galvanized though, do it outside on a windy day, so as to not fry your lungs or wtf ever the gas does to you ha.

dont buy steel just take from dump sites or trash sites. I mean a lot of people just want to get rid of shit like that. Thats how I got two 15ft long steel rails...someone was tryin to throw em out. Its not hard just look around.

what u want is COLD ROLLED STEEL. its the hardest steel u can buy. usually runs about 2-5 dollars a foot depending on what u buy. we made a 28 foot 3x1 inch flat bar rail for like 90 bucks. we used the left overs for supports along with other random metal we had in the shop.

there is this very cheap light blue plastic piping you can get its cheap strong and slides well

terrible^..........its def cheaper and more efficient to go with flatbar rather than a shotgun......pinch welding a shotgun rail together is a pain too

well gidget3612's dad is helping us out with getting steel and he knows what he's doing so things have begun to get up and running. thanks for the help everyone. hopefully we're going to have a good assortment of rails for next season. we're thinking about organizing some rail jams so it should be some fun sheet. locals keep yer ears open eh?
