Racism still strong in america

I watched Barack Obama's speech tuesday morning and felt something i haven't

been able to feel for eight long years under George Bush which was insperation

and love of my country, for a person to talk about racism like were adults has never really

happened before in the last half century. But as i have looked at the respone from the news media

and political internet forums i see almost a backlash against that kind of honesty. People pick parts of the speech they can use to relate to his pastor and his dividing words and ignore the honesty and sencerity of the truth of that message, which was to lay bare the anger that many black and white people felt against each other and through that maybe we could concentrate on real problems that this country faces and not the superficial ones. People are not responding the way i hoped, there is still that under current of racism in every interview of people who didn't like the speech, people use the words "them" or "the blacks" which means they might as well be calling them niggers. i am begining to give up hope on our parents genereation in terms of getting anywhere towards ending racism, its seems that all that has changed is that instead of activity speaking against black people like in the first part of 20th century with the push for segragation, our parents generation has instead just ignored the problem in hopes that some how it would fix its self, and when confronted with those truths i am seeing a back lash almost as if saying "how dare you pop our bubble of self protecting ignorence, i see black people in commericals on tv and some of them won the oscers, and look one of them can even do pretty well running for president" but as soon as that spotlight is turned on us we run and hide and say get the fuck away from me. So in the end i have to ask my self is our generation any different, we have embraced rap and the gangsta style and i dont doubt for a minute that most of us want to see more diversity in our sport but in the end most of us are white upper middle class rich kids. There are barriars to entry in to the world of skiing the primary one being money you got to have the skrilla in order to rip and that is part of the reason why our sport is dominated by white america. Are we really creating a better world or are we just perpetuting the same mistakes our parents made?

Give him a break, hes displaying intelligent thought, which is usually lacking in 90% of the other posts here.

Racism will always exist. Until we all look physically indifferent, theres always going to be an association of "us" vs "them". Humans have a need to form groups and networks, and it inherently creates outsiders and tension. Part of our nature I guess.

i think it's one thing to say that we're always going to have race, and another to say we're always going to have racism-- atleast thats what i'd hope

Depends what you believe is human nature. From what I've seen, humans naturally look ways to include or exclude other people. I think its just part of our species to discriminate. It sucks, and I hope we can change that, but its going to need to overwrite whats hard coded into our genes.

you obviously have never been to Downveyville, predominantly of Irish decent and about as anti-black as thought humanly possible.

don't be a dick dude this is a really important topic. give him a break homie. we don't need this negativity just more positivity :)

Hope belongs is prison only, you liberal puke. Your "color blind" philosophy is great for the classroom, but in real life it simply is a idealogy. We see, therefore we see color and skin, and past experiences will dictate our thoughts on every indivdual we see on a daily basis. If we would see every individual and create a memory for them in a ivory tower world that would be great, but of course that would be impossible. Racism will exist forever and the day is does not will be the day the human race comes to an end. Sorry to be so negitive, but life will give you experiences that educate you and create the person you are today. Racism equates to power is a mis-conception, all people can hate, it just depends on how they express it to others in the community.

He's not racist, he is just addressing the heat that many black men feels every single day in America. It's about time somebody spoke up with no strings attatched about this issue. That was all the rage built up inside of him for many years. Everything he said had validity and truth. Racism is not cool and the Rev was a perfect reason to show the kind of anger that racism creates in the victim. Now do you see why black kids in ghettos all accross the country are born into a society that does not like them, which creates anger, which creates more hate? Crime comes from that hate and if you can't make that connection then you need to head over to Oakland and open your eyes. I went to school in Oakland for a few years and it really opened my eyes.

Obama uses racism to his advantage. u cant criticize the guy for one of his IDEAS (not skin color) without being called racist. samething works for hillary and sexism but to a lesser extent cuz its hard to tell shes a woman

Exactly. Its called the herd instinct and has been present in human kind since the beginning of time. Its part of our primal nature. We recognize differences in other groups and often discriminate against them because in the past, those who were like us were safe, and those who were unfamiliar we're potentially dangerous or the enemy. I'm not saying we can't overcome this, but to some extent it is human nature and we may have a long way till we overcome out natural primal tendencies.

i do agree its a non issue, in my mind race is no different than, i dont know, hair color... it is so easy to look past skin color and judge a person on there actions, beliefs, ect...

not really related, but just about every one of my cousins is adopted(not white) (dont care, a person is a person is a person) and my own sister is adopted, and is something like half Brazilian...

hold on while i pick up all the hate you spwed everywhere.

i'm not for "color blindness" i'm not sure where it sounded like i was suggesting that we completely ignore race. Race is something to be recognized, it is unavoidable, but that doesn't mean you've got to be a racist.

when you say "there is no way racism can go away," what if the only person who was saying that was you?

it sounds like you're a bit mixed up and think i want the construct of race to go away, which it can't, i agree, our experiances are based in the visual realm, and we're always going to be able to see differences in others, but that doesnt mean that we always will have to act on the racial judgemnets we make. No african american wants color blindness, but i'd bet everyone would want a world free from racial discrimination. I think there is a big distinction between the negitive actions of being a racist and simply being able to experiance and recognize the color of ones skin and the effect it's had on ones life.

right, rev wright is a huge racist IMO and barack is NOT, i do think barack should have completely disowned him, then i dont think we would be having this huge race discussion in the national media....

Just because he goes to a certain church does not mean he believes in every single world that comes out of the Pastor/Priests mouth or the church doctorate.

I had attended a Catholic Church for most of my life, but just because I went to church often doesn't mean I believed in everything I was told to. During my Priests sermons some of it I could agree with and some of it I could not. Same goes for Obama, I'm not in the guys head but I'm sure he doesn't believe in EVERY single word that comes outta the guys mouth.

Give the guy a break. Hillary realizes she's losing control in the Democratic debate and now she's degrading the mans character in really low and pathetic ways.

I think public disowning has become just a media fed and bred spectacle. The mere fact that this is a top issue on all cable networks shows how utterly lame we've become as a nation.

i can agree to disagree with you. in the fact that if that was me i would have come out and say this man is no person i want associated with my campaign and i completely disown him....

again, i have never said i think barack is racist,(i dont believe he is) i do think he faces serious problems regarding the people he chooses to associate with...

i want you to read the following article and every time they say "black" (black value system) it said "white" i want you to tell me it would not be racist....

here, this is straight off their website

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System

written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer

Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal

statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified

in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are

gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:

  1. Commitment to God
  2. Commitment to the Black Community
  3. Commitment to the Black Family
  4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
  5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
  6. Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
  7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
  8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
  9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing

and acquired skills available to the Black Community
  10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources

for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
  11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership

who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
  12. Personal commitment to embracement of

    the Black Value System.

man, there are so many extremist's out there who think when u say something bad about another race other then ur own, then u must be a racist...for example, if you had a bad waiter at a restraunt and he was black and he wasnt doing a good job and you say that he wasnt, you surley must be a racist..

I fucking hate when people do this shit... you think giving other races better benifits is not racist. wow. and calling "them black". what do u want us to call them green, orange, yellow cause that wouldnt make much sense. you would probably rather us call them african american? not all black people are born in africa or america sorry to break it to ya. but if ur reffering to a certain person its probably much easier to just say white or black.

I know there is racism in the whole world not just america, and i truely want it to stop, but im sad to say racism will never end. there will always be people who judge other people not by who they are but by the color of there skin. everyday this happens, and people grow from this and learn to do the same. It makes me extremely mad whenever i see this and yes i am sometimes ashamed of being a human because it is the people i live with whether they are black, white, brown or whatever who are distroying the world with hate. But, on the other side there are also many people who are contributing to help not just one single race, but everybody. Trying to make equality around the world.

I'm not a racist person, but i know some of you will interperet this and say its racist. sorry, but were all people. "we all bleed the same fucking colour" - nikal fieldz

so true. read up on the darryl hunt case.

everyone should actually. its such bullshit. the guy is a profit.

I never said anything about the reverends words being racist or not, so please dont speculate and raise questions as if I did.

My issue with all of this is two-fold. One, its completely bullshit to expect candidates to be responsible for their friends words or actions. Having them apologize for their associates behavior is ridiculous. Besides this fact, after listening to some of the reverends OTHER speeches, I think that this whole thing has been dramatically blown out of proportion. 99% of the values of that church are ones that are wholesome and racially uncharged, which is better than some other churches and religious groups backing different candidates. So what, the guy said "God Damn America". Maybe He should, it might actually make us take our heads out of our asses and respond rationally once in a while.

The media has only exacerbated this situation too. Racism is plenty prevalent in America, just look how fucking eager every outlet is to jump on a story of 'race' having to do with the 'black' candidate. Theres resentment and issue still alive today from both sides, and both sides are just as guilty (in my humble opinion) of continuing to make it an undisclosed issue. I dont think its going to vanish anytime soon, so get used to it I guess, especially if Obama wins the election.

And for the record, other US leaders and politicians have associated themselves with much sketchier characters. Who's worse to hang out with, someone encouraging black rights or a Iraqi dictator who gasses his own people?

...are you serious?? come on. Rev wright is not racist, he is just expressing what black people feel every single day, and I think it's about time that people realize that. This is what black people talk about when white people are not around. His speeches are powerful and need to be listened to. I'm sorry it's not politically correct, but feelings don't generally have political correctness.

Open your eyes and listen to what this guy has to say. If Barack completely disowned him, then Barack would have lost my vote. Barack's retaliation speech was our generation's "I have a dream speech".

stop the hate everybody is the same, racism is the most dumb thing on earth , im against racism lets al live together peacefully on this planet yall"
