Racing Skiis

So i might have a few extra bucks to spend this winter if i sell off my ARGs and i was thinking about getting a fun pair of either Slalom or DH skis. I am fully aware they are polar opposites, i just think it would be fun to be on a fast pair of skis that rail turns.

So all you racers, what skis would you recomend for a 6'4" 200lb guy looking for some fun slalom skis(to set the record for most turns on a single run) and a DH ski(to pretend i am Ted Ligety)?

I have some surfaces I use for park and another for deeper days on occasion but I have Nordica speeds Mach 3. There a couple years old now but i absolutely love them i find myself using them more and more when im skiing with a mixed group and not all park riders. So much fun and they haul

When I race, I ski on my dynastars. I believe they're speed omeglass world cups? I can't exactly recall... But they work wonders for turning and speed. I love them.

if you're not actually going to be racing stay away from slalom skis. they're super hooky and must be on edge all the time otherwise they're pretty squirrely. look into a 3-4 year old pair of GS skis, they'll be way more fun and a lot more versatile (goin extra fast and still being able to rail turns).

i rode atomic sx2s in 165 for gs and I loved them, I rode atomic sl2s 155 for slalom racing and they were quick, they could turn way faster than I could manage

oh, and I'm 6'3" 170

This is why I want skis with like a 10m turn radius. I can go down the super ExtREm3 east coast blue square trails and make like 10000 turns. But really, pulling super tight turns and feeling the g forces is so great.

But I don't own slalom skis and I'm not even close to your height and weight, so that's my only contribution here...

i'd recommend gs skis

someone above noted the negatives of slaloms

you would never get the chance to really ski DH skis not on a race course

gs skis rip, can be skied somewhat reasonably not on a course, and can be had for cheap, racer sell them off barely used

just make sure they aren't bent and that they have some edge left.

Take it from an ex-FIS racer, if you want a fun SL ski, go with anything 165. If you want a super aggressive ski that will make you work, look to Head or Atomic. Blizzard, Dynastar and Volkl will be less work.

Personally, I wouldnt recommend a DH ski. I would recommend a LARGE GS ski (190+ easily) if you want something to rip turns on. Anything that is FIS regulated for last year would be great (this year changed min, reqs for the GS skis) and can rail. I have a pair of Atomic 191 GS D2s and theyre awesome for those days that you want GS skis for. Atomic, Head, and Blizzard tend to have stiffer skis than Volkl, Rossi, or Dynastar.

I have a pair of 191 Atomic D2s I can sell to you w/o bindings for a price i cant decide due to my current intoxication. Ill get back to you tomorrow

as everyone has been saying, there's no point in getting a DH ski unless you actually plan on racing DH on them. they can't really be used in public safely, and GS skis are plenty fast just for skiing around a resort anyways

SL skis are only hooky if you suck, definitely much harder to master technically than a GS ski. despite what people are saying, SL skis are more versatile than GS skis, as in you can manageably ski other terrain than just groomers, which you can't really on GS skis. if you are only getting one, i'd say SL, if you are getting two, do SL and GS, not DH

slalom skis are tons of fun once you get used to them. GS skis would be your next logical choice, they are also really fun if youre just bombing steep cruisers. i have both of these and i wouldnt pick anything else

i have these, but the model with the hook on the tip. 165cm. super playful ski

these in 185, they charge. fun as fuck

I currently own a pair of HEAD WorldCup i.SL Race Department 155cm skis. I don't know what's the deal with all these guys^, but I don't any "squirrellyness" with mine, unless you are bombing straight at over 50 mph. Another thing I can think of, is some people up there^ actually are not carving, and are BSing their way around with slidey-turn stuff.

My recommendation: Do a demo. Regardless of what WE say, we don't know YOU as well as YOU know YOU. :)

Do you really want a full on race ski? If you want something a bit more versatile there are ton of skis with a radius of about 17m that carve great, but aren't unskiable in public (DH ski), or too short/small a radius to really be stable at speed (SL ski). Yeah GS skis are fun, but the current ones have got really pretty large radiuses for just having fun on.

jesus man. last year i raced on 155 sl skis and 175 gs. and back then i was like 110 pounds and 5'2.

you're a pussymotherfucker

thats dumb. im 4 inches taller than you and my sl skis were 151. i dont know why you would put yourself at such a disadvantage giving yourself skis that are going to be so much harder to turn. then again you're probably trolling.

i always loved how atomic race skis skied., especially the d2 series... havent really been up to date on my race skis but you can be sure atomic, head, and rossignol are all putting out a solid products.

Slalom skis are a ton of fun but as mentioned squirrely and not that fast. I'd get some GS skis, in FIS length (at least 188) lots of fun if you have a long hill. DH skis are pretty useless unless you're going 100km/h

Debatable that you could ski a ski that length and at that weight. The smallest girls I know who raced FIS were on those skis and most had trouble with the GS. SL, its doable, GS, not so much. Height isnt a huge factor, but your weight is. Maybe you did ski it, but you couldnt have been fast.

Your retarded dude. the majority of girls ski that length or longer. And, I had to ski a 182 when I was 5 foot 95 pounds....

Key words, HAD to. And most girls stick that length. Most girls at the FIS level stay on that ski unless theyre racing in college where they have the WEIGHT to push it around. Youre required to ski a 175+, but most would not go above it unless they over ski it.

You can ski that length, but is it fun? No. The 191 is not a fun ski to ski on, but its better than the alternative of a 186 for me, which was all too short.

Just got these, and they fucking rail!

Any pair of good slalom skis will work fine. GS is a bit harder to use for freeskiing because you have to be going faster for them to be fun, and if it gets crowded that can be a problem.

If you're coming from dull park skis, then be careful because they will kick your ass. I would say don't get DH though, if you don't have the hill to yourself then you can't really use them.

my spoiled jewish friend has a pair of these in mint condition that he doesnt care about and lets me use.

they are perfect especially on those icy east coast days.

ive offered to buy them but he will only take full price for a ski he has told me he was going to throw away.

Not a full-on race ski, but the Nordica Fire Arrow 84 EDT cranks the shit out of turns while still being somewhat versatile.

I raced for a very long time and I was always into Fischer, amazing skis. At the end, i was skiing for Salomon though, which were also great skis! If you want something even more stiff, id go with the Nordica race ski. If i were you, I'd get the Fischer's!!

HEARTCARVE 4 LYFE BRAH, HEART+BODY=1!!1!!, IT WILL CHANGE YOUR WHOLE PERSPECTIVE ON SKIING AND LIFE AND STUFF

This is great advice.

Why do you want a full blown race ski over a normal performance ski?

I ski a 155 Atomic D2 WC SL ski and 183 Atomic D2 WC GS ski.

Get some GS skis.....slalom skis are just too short. And downhill skis will have you wanting to slam your dick in a car door. I'm 6' and my racing skis are 181cm Rossi World Cup GS skis with a 21m radius.

Even better, go to the website of the race club at your local mountain. All the race club kids sell their racing skis after they've used them and they're usually in really good condition.
