Racing = better at freestyle?

couldn't resist picking this apart. The problem is that the aerial skiers who aren't skiers is that they aren't skiers. At least a park rat who can't carve a proper turn or sits on his tails is a skier. There aerials folk are gymnasts. sure, they have skis on their feet, but probably don't know how to turn them, sure they're doing triple flipped 1080's, but it's on the exact same jump EVERY TIME. Their venue never changes, it's the exact same dimensions everywhere in the world. At least halfpipes vary in pitch and length to a certain degree.

Might as well throw them on a trampoline and be done with it.
 
that makes no god damn sense at all. why are they not skiers? because they don't know how to turn their skis? but you just said at least a park rat who can't properly turn IS a skier...

 
they aren't skiers because they don't ski. they go straight from a designated spot, hit a jump and do a trick, land and stop. they don't turn, hell, they don't even speed check, they are as much skiers as nordic jumpers are.

at least a dismal park rat with no real skiing ability still skis around the park moving from feature to feature. Just because you throw a gymnast on a pair of skis and tell him/her to do their gymnastics stuff doesn't make them a skier, it makes them a gymnast.
 
big air competitions aren't held on the exact same jump everywhere every time. the people that compete in big air competitions don't spend their entire "career" just hitting one jump over and over.

seams like you're arguing for the sake of arguing. either that or you're really thick headed. good old internet.
 
You would be suprised at the number of ex racers who make video of the day with their edits, and have amazing style. Example, Micheal Briggs. Check the current VOD
 
for sure it does. most of the people that i know that can shred hard are exracers, it just gives you better overall technique and control. they arent scared at shit icy conditions or high speeds, and know how to use their edges unlike a lot of park rats.
 
It's funny. I could make the same argument about park rats or urban skiers.

Basically I don't follow; at all.

Both aerialists and nordic jumpers are skiers. Most of them are incredibly skilled ones at that. Skiing is having fun on skis. The skill sets vary from discipline to discipline, but in the end we are all out there having fun on skis.
 
I dont know the High School Racing scene in New York, but in Oregon it was super lax, everyone just had a good time, and the only time i truely felt like i was competeing was at state. Basically it was a group of friends who went and skiid wenesday and thrusday nights and had a good time. I recommend it.
