Racing = better at freestyle?

alot of the kids at my mountain that are good used to or still do race and i know a couple pros used to race..like jon....so does racing make you better?

it most definitely makes you a better skier, better jibber... eh maybe, it's definitely debatable.

I've seen a lot of good racers go to freestyle and suck and I've seen the opposite. I think it teaches good balance and definitely makes you a better all around skier.

i think that this and moguls would help, you because i heard that it really teaches you have to use your edges,

i think it would be the most helpful in pipe

better skiing, yes. better at tricks? maybe, since they're more athletic but most ski racer kids i know who ski park have gnar racer steeze.

i used to race and hell yes does it help!
but even skiing with racers can make you better. copying their turns ect.

whoa mellow out.

i love kids who do that just reckless man it's awesome. high speed slide turns to the part just not giving a fuck.

that's what skiing is all about

All stated above, also teaches air and body awareness, being able to recover from sketchy positions and being comfortable with hitting things with speed.

If you are a more intuitive and solid skier, a lot of shit in the park can come more natural. That said, the contemporary park scene will go to the youth, ie the ones that learn to ski in the park and get year-round training in all things park.

Well if you hate nothing more than than seeing kids ski different than the "proper way" then you are gonna be hating a lot more soon. There are kids skiing right now who weren't even born when park skiing started. Kids who grew up skiing park. I guarantee you they don't give a fuck what way or skiing you think is proper.

Racing at a young age also means alot of time spent on the mountain and a lot of spare time for in the park as well as alot more confidence on snow making you less scared for learning

yeah I'm just getting into park and whatnot now. Back a few years ago when I started my buds would be like man lets go rip some jumps and stuff, but I was like nah man, I suck at making nice carve turns. I just slid all over the place. Now that I practiced up I can rip so fast with the carves (Feels nice and flowy and looks impressive) and its just made skiing (even park) alot more enjoyable.

Racing helps alot fosho, wish i started when i was a youngin.

sorry I was just confused in your original post. I didn't know when you said "seeing" that you meant "getting hit by".

Still. keep on rocking in the free world little joey.

I dont think hes refering to someone who is just not a very technical skier but more of the kids who can hit a couple of things in the park but then are just completely lost every where else in the mountain and end up just mashing through the park which is another good thing about racing.

after taking my level 1 ski instructor i felt my park skiig got better lol just cause they teach u how to actually ski not just laID BacK

After racing for 9 years, i can definetly say it made me better at everything except rails. But I have racing friends with a decent rail game so maybe its just me.

racing helps no doubt. That being said i think that there are kids that never raced that still kill at park. You have to actually learn how to ski before you get into park, not necessarily race but you need to acquire the necessary skills of skiing outside the park before you shred in the park.

I raced for five years. I loved it, and made me an amazing skier. My senior year in sectionals I did a front flip at the bottom oft

I raced for.....I don't even knowhow many years. But yes, racing or any formal sor of training will help every aspect of your skiing significantly.

With that being said it would be difficult to START racing after big exposed o freestyle stuff

Wish I had the opportunity to grow up racing, there is no doubt that it helps, although it is funny seeing the park rats kids that grow up opposed to racing and just hit jumps. I've taught a few kids like that, and they loose their shit when they have to do some hard skiing. But got no problems busting out cork 7s.

doesn't necessarily make you a better freeskier, but it makes you way better on skis in general. I know I can work my skis in the way I do because I used to race.

i meant like kids that currently race and ski park like i know there are a bunch of pros that raced when they were young but then stopped

Racing will 100% make you a stronger skier, but I think its really their mindset that makes the transition to park so easy for them. My only experience with racing is a few christmas and march break intro camps but they push their skiers really hard, and racers are very confident and driven. They have a very competitive mindset and are always looking for that next big trick. One of my friends quit racing and after a year of park was throwing rodeo 7's, switch 9's, and misty's of cannons. Racing will give you a great place to start skiing park, but obviously your coaches aren't going to teach you cork 9's.

i raced competivly in vt out of bma and still race for my highschool, but i definetly consider myself a freeskier over a racer. dont worry im not rocking a gs suit when i freeski, i got saga. but racing has definetly boosted my skiing confidence and ability, without it there is no way i could do what i do today while freestyle skiing.
