Up-and-coming rapper Dolla was killed in a shooting at an upscale shopping mall, and a man was arrested for investigation of murder, police said Tuesday.Los Angeles County Coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said the man killed Monday afternoon at the Beverly Center was 21-year-old Roderick Anthony Burton II, the birth name of rapper Dolla.Police said in a statement Tuesday that Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, of Atlanta, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport with a gun Monday night. His bail was set at $1 million.

Burton is among a growing list of slain rappers, including Tupac Shakur in 1996, the Notorious B.I.G. in 1997, Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC in 2002 and Deshaun "Proof" Holton in 2006.Burton was shot several times in a parking structure at the Beverly Center and was declared dead at a hospital, police said.Police did not say what may have motivated the killing. An autopsy had not yet been performed on Burton by Tuesday afternoon, and charges against Berry had not yet been presented to prosecutors. Records in Georgia show that neither Burton nor Berry had served time in state prison."Dolla was trying to be a role model for other kids who had similar childhood experiences," said Laura Wright, Burton's publicist.Another woman the Los Angeles Times identified as the Burton's publicist, Sue Vannasing, said the rapper was waiting at a valet stand after a shopping trip when he was shot. She did not respond to repeated calls and e-mails from The Associated Press seeking additional comment.Police said Berry was found hours later in a ticketing area of Los Angeles International Airport. He was believed to have dropped off a rental car before he was found, said airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb."As the officers approached the suspect, they asked him `Do you know why we're here?'" Holcomb told the AP. "He put his (hands) up in the air and said `Yes, I've got a gun in my waistband. Don't shoot me.'"Airport police found a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun and turned Berry over to Los Angeles police.Dolla, a protege of hip-hop artist Akon, worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film "Step Up" and recently released two singles with Akon: "Like This" and "She So Fine."Dolla was "an incredible artist," Akon's Konvict Entertainment said in a statement Tuesday. "This is a senseless crime and the industry has lost a real talent. Our heart goes out to his family, friends, and fans," it said.Dolla's MySpace page said he once modeled for Diddy's Sean John clothing line and was signed to Jive and Elektra record labels.Diddy's publicist did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment Tuesday.Burton was working on his second album, "A Dolla and a Dream," which was due to be released on Akon's Konvict Muzik label. A song with T-Painwas titled "Who in the (Expletive) Is That?"On one of his songs, "Rainy Nights," Burton seemed to foreshadow his own death: "Papa died at 25 so he must have been great, they say the good die young, I guess I'm on my way."
R.I.P Dolla. Probably one of the newer underground rappers that was soon goin to become one of the top. I personally was a fan of him. I copy and pasted this from my yahoo page. i was devastated when i heard the news. Too many haters out there nowadays
 
Yeah, sad that people will go around killing people just like that.

Sad that someone lost their lives like that. No one deserves that.

But I do think when you get into the rap game you're certainly asking for it.

It's full of artists with hot tempers, big egos, money, guns, lack of morals, etc, etc.

i'm not talking o.d.i'm just saying if you are involved in illegal, gang related, drug related, whatever related hate related activities, don't expect a gold platter. the problem is that humanity has always idolized people who get by doing stupid shit and living to tell it.maybe he didn't, i'm just saying. rip granted and i knew nothing about him, but you know, all i'm saying is don't expect peaches when you're clear cutting the forest.
 
i'm not one to find death tragic in the least bit, but a lot of people do. i just don't see why somebody who gets involved in drugs and dies from a related cause is less important than anyone else, for instance, extreme athletes.
 
i'm just saying, in my opinion, someone who asks for it, will usually merit what they get.
it has nothing to do with race, because there are plenty of people who grow up in shitty lives and make an honest living for themselves. some people have no damn work ethic, and some people have personality disorders, which is just beyond anything remotely special.
who cares if i'm white, like i don't have problems either. i owe my school loan which is over 10 g and im not gonna deal drugs to get out of debt. i'm not a spoiled little teen like a lot of kids on this site.

how is consuming mind-altering substances "hate related"? i take stuff all the time- smoke pot regularly, blow coke a few times a month, roll often, take LSD whenever it's available (lately not too often, but very often in the past), and have tried pretty much everything else i've been able to get my hands on- and i'm not "hate related". i get pissy sometimes, but i have very little "hate" inside me.

i didn't say that drugs were hate related, but drug wars are.i've graduated high school, about 7 years ago, i've studied branches of psychology and socialogy, and have a broad interest in literature and politics, and the environment. awareness gets me off, so fuck you. i've used drugs, and just don't like doing them.have your drugs, and i'm fine if you want to use them and are responsible about it. ironic? perhaps, that's your business, just don't have people crying because it was a cause of death.

so, i met one of Dolla's cousins today- i'm in class with him right now. he offered a lot more insight into it. apparently Dolla was followed from LAX to the mall and was shot on his way out... came into town to shoot a video and ended up getting killed the afternoon he arrived and there is still no motive- and that's coming from the streets, not the cops.

just 21 and was on his way to blowing up this summer... definitely sad, Jen. if you disagree, though, i'd be happy to extend your lack of sympathy to his family... and it's funny you mentioned bloods earlier, let's just put it that way.
