What hard drive speed do I need if I want to store the video i'm editing in Final Cut on the hard drive?

A 7200 RPM drive will be fine for you...

uhh, i'm pretty sure there's no hard drive speed requirement. it just needs to be big enough. most harddrives are either 5400 or 7200rpm.

ya, 7200 RPM is fine. the 10,000 RPM are way to expensive.

just for a little follow up.

i got the Western Digital WD Passport

it's working great, there's no lag issues with final cut and i'm very happy with it. also it's slim and really portable. all around awesome.
