Ok so im laying a round of eight ball with a friend and i strike one of my balls ( stripe) and miss the shot but the cue ball goe's off and sink's one of his balls. Do i still get to play because i hit my ball first and the whole thing was accidental or is it his shot.

my other question is my friend goes for his shot and completely misse's all balls on the table. I go to pick up the ball because it was a scratch and i get to place the ball but he claims that as long as the cue ball hits a rail it is not a scratch.

Sorry for a completely random stupid thread im just getting pissed off at the fact that he is acting like he know's everything about pool and all his rule's are right( which they might be) and all mine are wrong.

Question1:3.5 FAILURE TO POCKET A BALL
If a player fails to pocket a ball on a legal shot, then the player’s inning is over, and it is the opponent’s turn at the table
Doesn't matter what you hit, as long as you hit your ball first, and since you didnt sink your ball, it's his turn. SOURCE: http://www.bca-pool.com/play/tournaments/rules/rls_gen.shtml
Question 2:
I couldn't find a source for this ( or just didnt look hard enuf, I'm in a rush) but AFAIK you are right, its gotta hit a ball to count.

First off, there are many different rules of pool, even at the proffesional level, but there are some general rules, so let me help you out.

If its your turn, you hit your ball with the cue ball and then the cue ball goes off and hits his ball in, then it is his turn, no penalty, his ball remains in the pocket obviously. If your ball goes in during the same scenario then you go again, because you made a ball. Both balls remain in the pockets

In official pool the cue ball must strike three rails or a ball. Also you are not allowed to hit the opponents ball first, but that rule is usually cast aside during recreational games.

Hope that helps

ight, yea question 1 i was kinda ify on like i could be right or he could be right but i was certain on # 2 that you HAVE to hit a ball.

and either way its my table, my rules.
