Quick Backcountry.com Question

They recently switched up the policy :( Now it is 90 day returns on used gear and lifetime on new, unused things.

The whole purpose of 100% return policy was if you had gear that didn't meet your standards, you could return, no questions asked.

BUT after tons of Jackasses like you
who would beat the shit out of skis, Hiking boots, and tons of other gear then would return claiming it didn't meet their needs just so they could have brand new gear, Backcountry got tired of being taken advantage of and now has a different return policy.

While I can completly understand why backcountry had change their policy, it still makes me sick that so many fellow outdoors people would take advantage of such a great company.

Way to go dipshits. I hope your happy with your new gear for the last time. This isn't directed at just the people in this thread, just all the people who screw over Backcountry and REI.

Actually the only jackass here is you. After talking with several backcountry employees (you know, the ones you're trying so hard to defend) told me they trade in their gear every year for fresh stuff and I should go ahead and do it because its awesome, I didnt think twice. You sound like such a little pussy bitch. Like its your family's business. Shut your mouth kid

What company buys back shitty used gear?

Yes some companies will Re-buy brand new gear that didn't sell that season. It depends on the Company and what they want to do. I've heard some companies doing this. Not many do.

Backcounty is also known to sell gear that comes back after it has been looked at, asses if it is safe to sell, and sells it discounted. Backcountry does sell a lot used gear onhttp://www.geartrade.com/.

But it's not like they take all the return gear they have, give full credit or brand new gear back to the consumer, then send it back to company they bought it from and get fully refunded by the company that sold it.

No way hell every company in the outdoor industry would take back beat to shit gear. You think Line gonna buy back busted skis? Or that MSR will buy back fuel pumps with melted O-rings?

It's a basic business idea. You make a product to sell. You sell the product to middle men. They mark up the price of the product. They sell the product. Consumer buys and uses. If it breaks or doesn't work right you refund under a warranty. If the warranty was expired you were shit out luck looking for a new product.

Until backcountry came in with their 100% return policy. If you bought a product and if it broke you could get a full refund if you felt you were screwed over.

They use to be able to get by because everyone respected what the company was trying to do and would buy from them. This allowed them to be profitable.

Every time you bought gear, beat it up and send it back for brand new gear, Backcountry looses money. Even if employees of the company say okay the company looses money and thus have to make changes to the company.

And yes people have returned gear in the past just so they could get new stuff. But now they are losing so much money because too many people abuse the system.

Now instead of 100% return policy that they have had for so long they have 90 day policy. Still really good policy compared to other sites. It's just now people like you won't get brand new gear every year.

And yes I speak up for company that I really like. So sue me for calling you and every other person out on it who takes advantage of backcountry.

Being in my mid 20's and living in Salt Lake City, I have many friends that work at Backcountry. Employees can't return or exchange anything purchased at a discounted price. Returning abused items to Backcountry is frowned upon by the people who work there. They do keep track of everything you have returned and you can get blacklisted if you abuse the system.

I am disappointed they changed the policy and they have lost much of my business because of it. I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars at Backcountry over the years and returned maybe two items ever. I would buy everything from them because of the lifetime return policy even though I never really had to use it. Since their return policy is the same as most other stores now, I would rather give my money to the smaller shops around town.

I still do very much appreciate that the Backcounry store is open on Sunday mornings. That's hard to come by in Utah and they have saved me many times when I needed last second bike parts before a Sunday ride.

Okay I noticed that it was different and wasn't sure if I was missing something. I understand where they're coming from as a company though in changing it. I will still give them a lot of business. 90 days is a lot of time still to use gear and return it for full credit if it isn't right. And I don't mind credit. There is always stuff to buy on Backcountry.

if you took advantage of the policy thats messed up, because thats going make bad buisness for backcountry its a great site with great gear. shame on you if you took advantage in the past

And even the stuff they sell on GearTrade is in great condition, they never cheat anyone. I just got a Vantage from there for $75 because there was this tiny tiny mark on the top. They didn't need to discount it so much. But because the guys at Backcountry are so freaking nice and reasonable, they make everyone so happy.

Damn shame that dicks take advantage of nice people.

The feeling is not mutual. It's a shame that they had to change their policy. It really sucks that such a legit company got taken advantage of and screwed over

They actually changed their policy because REI changed their's, they literally did lifetime returns because REI did and now that they don't they have no need to.

I doubt the people returning fucked up equipment was actually effecting the business. Do you know BC.coms numbers? No. They do 8 digits in sales every year, the income they lose from < 1% of their consumers returning their gear doesn't effect them, especially since they have returns written off in their budget already so they actually don't lose any revenue.

let me clear the air here.

here is our official (new) return policy

• We will always stand behind the gear we sell and accept returns at any time in the event of a failure, defect or warranty issue.

• We accept lifetime returns for any reason for a full refund on any gear that is still new and unused.

• We also allow a generous 90 day period where you can use your gear to make sure that it is the perfect fit and meets all of your needs and expectations. During these 90 days a return can be made for any reason for a full credit.

people who complain about the return policy are more than likely the ones abusing it. if you claim you never abused it, then the change shouldn't affect you at all. we'll still cover anything that's defective, it's just turned into way more of a case by case basis. if we determine that the item has been excessively abused and used past it's limits, then that's on you. if you send it back, we'll simply send it back to you.

as far as reasoning for the change: REI is our biggest competitor. Their policy changed, so as a result, we changed ours literally a week later. another reason was, the policy was being abused, namely by dogfunk users. i forget the exact figure, but nearly 60% of snowboards were returned last year.

we do (did) have the ability to flag and/or blacklist a customer if we deem it necessary. your order history will show every purchase/return you've ever made, and there are extensive notes on each order.

feel free to post any more questions.

Also, to elaborate on this. The "unlimited, no questions asked" return policy may be gone, but if you use something for more than 90 days and something goes legitimately wrong with it, we'll still cover it. You're not shit out of luck. Just another thing to consider.

Holy shit, I just checked geartrade, and there are like 8 pages of snowboards. I know not all of them are from Backcountry, but still, holy shit.
