sorry for ding this i tried to find old threads on ram but found none.

What do i really need to know/ watch for when im looking for ram to buy, whats the difference between good ram and bad ram because on tigerdirect.ca there's :

Premium 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400Mhz Memory 2-Pack (2 x 512MB) ... for 88.99 so im guessing it isnt very good? what do i need ot know?

Is Premium the brand of it? Never heard of that kind, so be careful. What you can do is search for the brand on google and see what reviews come up. I know Tigerdirect normally has some good prices on Ultra ram. Thats what I have and its fine.

go for Corsair ram. It's more expensive but some of the best you can get.

heat spreaders and such. You can get a gig of dual channel for about 170CDN

It also depends on what you are using it for. Do you just need more ram, or are you using it for gaming or something that is memory intensive?

DDR stands for double data rate ( You want that 256= 512 exc) Also the higher the PC##### the better, just don't buy whatever the cheapest stick is. also make sure it's pin # is compatable with your motherboard

We pay our debt sometimes.

on the same note, if you ahve a lower pc#### then what your buying your wasting your money. the slowest one slows the other one down to its speed.

Sorry man...you're wrong on that.

With DDR ram there're a couple options you have. You do want the fastest rate ram your machine can handle. However, if you have dual channel (if it says DDR2 compliant, then, you're ok) you'll want 2 sticks instead of one. Paired ram is MUCH faster than a single piece with. Ok...not ridiculously, but it is.

The idea is that the timing system of the 2 pieces was tested in the factory and it was noted that their speed was matched within a certain latency. That'll give you better performance.

Think of it this way, you're trying to write a gig of data to a location. Would you rather try to write 1 gig to 1 hard drive or have it write half to 2 discs at the same time. Theoretically, it'd take half the time to write to 2 discs (this isn't anywhere near true, but that's the purpose of raid 0).

It's the same idea with paired DDR ram. You're attempting to minimize any bottlenecks. So, if you can store half your stuff on one chip and half on the other with a good ram controller you're not only going to access data faster b/c it's split apart, but you're changing the actual abstract location of the of the bottleneck and taking it off the actual bus speed of the motherboard.

Did I make sense?

yes, but i still say that if he has another stick that he is planning on keeping he is wasting his money if he gets a new stick that is faster.

yeah, definitely. although, if he has only one stick then it's probably not a board that can handle paired ram. I'd imagine if the board had the ability and he purchased it from a major manufacturer they'd put in paired ram for cost reasons.
