alright so i have to do a 5-7 page paper about a culture, i chose the skiing culture and Newschoolers.com. You can answer all the questions or just a few, whatever you like. Also I need permission to use your writing and quote you guys and stuff so...BY WRITING IN HERE YOU GIVE ME PERMISSION TO QUOTE AND USE WHAT YOU SAY!!

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

sorry these questions are pretty shitty, but i dont really know what to ask and im pretty confused about how to write this.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

their lame and they should be cool like us

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

that were gay and our clothes look stupid cause their usually bigger than the norm

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

summer is awful because you cant ski real mountains and there is nothing to do

besides backyard sessions and camps

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

were really unique people and only freeskiers understand what its like to be a park skier and why we dress the way we do. and the jokes we have on ns are usually nothing anyone can understand unless they are on here so it personal and thats cool.

you can quote what i just said

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

well, i let people do what they do, but if what they do is stupid, then i don't like them.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

most of the time, amazement, usually from a combination of their perception of who i am and the fact that i ski.

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

i love summer, second-favourite season next to winter. I have skied a few times in the summer, mostly urban.

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

most of us are freeskiers, and we also enjoy a lot of the same types of humour, music, clothing, etc.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

Everyone has their own hobbies, if i for instance can feel such a passion for skiing i am sure others feel the same way about their own individual hobbies. In reference to snowboarders, i am sure they feel the same great passion of hitting the slopes, whether it be a pillow line, bit booter, and rail slaying urban action.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails) I believe there is a lot of misconception towards freeskiing, and it may not be as popular as snowboarders in the park, but wait 15 years and see, i wouldn't doubt if skiing has overtaken snooaboarding in the park

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.) No skiing from end of beginning of April till the begining of December, when you dream skiing, its very hard for you to wake up and remember you like in Toronto, where it is constantly raining, and more often than none there is fresh ice rather than powder, yet we still head for the hills,

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

We share a very strong passion for the same thing, by talking sharing videos, photos, and many many stories we enrich our passion with much diversity yet we all share a common dream.

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

This is from my NS blog: https://www.newschoolers.com/web/content/readblog/member_id/91259/

Okay rewind back to when I

was in grade 6, back to the kid I was with a pre-pubescent squawky voice.

Growing up in the big metropolis of Toronto, yes I was a born and bred city

slicker. It all began as a school trip, it was late January, the place-Horseshoe

Valley, a fine specimen of a hill with the ridiculous vertical rise of 95

metres, and the longest run being 671 metres. The condition in Southern Ontario are like no other, with

beautiful shiny ice strips and patches right around every corner of groomers,

it was easy to see myself as a bobsledder of skiies.

But I digress,

arriving with +100 gapers from my school, myself included, in grade 6, the

dilemma of properly fitting boots to a hundred plus kids caused chaos and

havoc, but I persevered as one of the first kids out the door with ski, poles

and all-goggles not included.

Now with the

TDSB (Toronto District School Board)- strict son of a guns- you have to get

stickers: red, blue, green being the final one to allow you to different part

of the hill.

I am not sure

how but I managed to slide my ass down the icy sloops to achieve my green

sticker, allowing full mountain (really?) privileges.

The rest of the

day consisted of races and yardsales, many, and the day that started my

joy and

passion for skiing. Just out on the snow, having a great time with

friends, and

isn’t that the whole point of skiing, let alone life. The seed was

planted, in

a metaphorical sense, and from that day on I’ve been thinking,

dreaming,

talking, watching and writing about skiing. I remember the nights

before i would go skiing, i would be so pumped, and stoked just

thinking about ripping lines, a long time before the park picture came

into my head.

Just the feel

when you know you are the first one down a run, or a line, even if it is a

groomer. The fresh S’s are carved, imprinted into one of Mother Nature’s greats

gifts to mankind (fire is so overrated), soon to be washed out by others.

Aptly describing

what skiing is, and means to me, can only be done successfully by looking at

the smile that gleams across my face at the end of an epic line, or newly

learned trick.

Since that day

long ago in the 6th grade, I have skied everywhere in Southern Ontario,

including the private resorts. My first full year (a ski year in Ontario is

roughly 4.5 months) consisted of Sunday lessons. Lessons might sound lame, but

to me it meant guaranteed skiing at least once a week. And hey, lessons

were only half a day so I could spend the 2nd half, doing whatever

the hell my heart desired. My skiing has even led my family to Quebec to ski a

small portion of their great mountains, and out west to Colorado, a trip of a

lifetime. (If you ever find yourself in Copper with nothing do, hit up the free

cat skiing, as it will put the cherry atop almost all ski trips)

Although my pow

day can be counted on one hand, I still cringe( I’ve got therapy for the

cutting) when the skies are full of

falling flakes and I’m stuck at the prison, the government officials like to

refer to as “school”. Maybe my time has come to just move out west and start my

dream as a ski bum.

About two years ago, and friend of mine introduced me to ravens ski

club...i figured if i could get out of the house to ski 5 days in a row

i could survive a camp to shred the park. Thats where Mr Gaudet

(ontarioskiingsucks) is introduce into the picture. This man single

handedly introduce me to the sport of freeskiing, sold me my first pair

of twin sticks, and introduced me to NS (biggest claim ever) before i

even met him. He turned out to be a legit coach...well at least he was

chill. Cheers Tim, for all the time i've wasted on NS and my passion of

Freesking can be accreditied to you.

Bonus: I was

writing this at work (its Saturday, I work at Booster Juice, who the hell would

want healthy juice on a Saturday, so I had lots of time on my hands).

My co-worker

asks what I was writing and I stated I was writing for a ski blog that I had

and it was for the “newschool” style of skiing. I asked her if she knew what

freeskiing was, and I kid you not, she says:

“Is that where

you ski without poles”

Hope this helps with your school assignment, goodluck

alright thanks everyone you will all get some karma, even though i was looking through there and im not sure how im gonna do this assignment FIVE TO SEVEN PAGES FUCK!!, but thanks anyways

Ok, you are writing a paper about ski culture, your questions are ok, but there are some other things you need to look at.

What is the history that has brought them to their present standing? What is the financial standing of this culture? What are the idiological beliefs of this culture? How does the geography affect the culture? What are the traditions that make this culture different from others? What is the social higherarchy within the culture?

Right now you pretty much have, how people view themselves and how they think others view them. You also need to realize how people really do view them.

Every culture has these same attributes, history, idiology, geography, monetary, social structure, and traditions that separate them from other cultures. So make sure to point out these attributes.

The one that sounds the most out there probably is idiology, but think about it. We dream about skiing. We talk about snow gods. In Whitefish they have a "sacrafice" festival type thing. I mean, how many non skiers do you know that can tell you who ullr is? Social structure? that should be obvious when we sit here and talk about gappers and claimers and freestyle and freeriding and people know to call drop ins. Traditions, well that includes everything from frequency of pot smoking to wearing snowpants to the grocery store.

If you need any more help, this was my major and I got A's in my classes so I can probably think of quite a bit more.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

I think non skiers are really missing out, but on the other hand as long as they dont snowboard at least theyres more pow pow to go around.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)
i dont think non skiers understand. but im sure theyre like hot damn!

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)
i hate summer.
ive skied hood.

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?
we know what the fucks up.
we ski.

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE
skiing is life. which is what all skiers think.
and the blurry monster is out there somewhere

1. They are missing out big time. I can’t imagine my life without skiing.

2. They think its cool but not that cool. A lot of people think it’s gay.

3. I feel like shit in the summer. Going to Mt. Hood was so fun. It was the awesome to be skiing during the summer after I hadn’t been able to ski in months.

4. It’s cool to meet other people that I can truly relate to, because we all have the same obsession. We think about skiing, a sport that doesn’t get much attention and isn’t that popular, every single day and it’s cool to know that there are people out there that get in all their ski gear even during summer just to be in it.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?
i just think they dont know what theyre missing out on. but they have their own things to do and their own choices. or they just straight up suck at skiing. my little sister cant ski/snowboard because she has a back problem and my parents wont let her because theyre scared. i feel bad for people like that who dont even have the chance to try it.
but this is why i'm a ski instructor. i wanna give people who've never got to experience what skiing has brought to me the chance to learn.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)
i tell people about it and they think it's intense.. i dunno how they think of me or if they change their perception of me. i dont think it does much. they probably seen the tattoo (of a snowflake haha) on my wrist and have already judged me from that.

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)
i do love the summer, but im usually thinking about something for next season. when im gonna get new gear, what i should do to get in shape, how much money i'll have to spend on ski stuff, new goals, confidence level, tye dying my old white ski pants.. hahaha

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?
the whole ski scene is something totally different from where i am at at home and at school and i love it.

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE
good luck.

1. Well i feel sorry for them. Skiing is great. but at the same time i kinda like my sport being smaller. I do hate kids that are like oh well skiing is gay boarding is cool. pisses me off.

2. Well i tell them i do tricks. they ask if i can do a back flip.

3. All i think about is skiing. Lots of trampoline time and working out. And i take snow frm ice rinks when i can a hit up some back yard stuff.

4. We all have a lot in stuff in common. And alot of us help each other out. where also super diverse theres kids from all over the world on here

5. How to get to chads gap from the bottom of alta. And pee in her butt. < you can quote me on that!

in the summer my ski friends and i sit around and wonder what other people do in the summer. we just dont get it.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

I don't discriminate, people can do what they like..Most of my friends are snowboarders, and we get along great when we are on the mountain. I don't appreciate the stereotypical snowboarding groups who look down on skiers as being inferior, as we are all out there for the same reason - to have fun. It's a lifestyle.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

Looking at freeskiing, many people don't actually know what it is, The common perception is that skiing is..well, skiing. Moguls, tight ski suits, drinking hot wine at a bar in the afternoon. When people who are uneducated on freeskiing get a glimpse of what is is, they are generally impressed. There will always be the snowboarders who refuse to accept that we are equal on the mountain.

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

My point of view is different. I'm from Australia and compared to much of the world, we get very little snow (i.e a solid base at the peak time of the year would max out at under 2metres). We take advantage of what we get, and i'll ski on partchy snow with grass everywhere if thats what it takes. So, we don't generally take it for granted. The temperature is too hot throughout the year (thus our minimal snowfall) to ski during summer, so i'm patient enough to ski for a week or so in winter and then wait until next year!! Newschoolers.com helps to pass the time with like-minded people.

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

We all share a common interest. At any point throughout the year, there will be members on the website talking about the sport we love. We are out there to help each other, offer advice and talk about all the elements of the sub-culture which has been created.

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

Global warming is having an impact on the sustainability of the sport, and I don't know what i'll do if commercial resort skiing ceases to exist in my lifetime.

yeah i know...i know people who've had to do pages like twice this long, and later in college i'll have to as well.

but this is the first time in like 3, 4 or 5 years that i've had to write one so long, so as i was saying

FUCK 5-7 PAGES, SHIT!!!!

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

Well I dont view them at all, the thing is skiing is not for everyone, just like running is not for everyone. It is a personal choice. I choice to ski because I like it, it is fun.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

In my eyes you need to break down this question into three parts

1. non skiers, my friends that are non skiers are really interested in what we do and how we do it. I have had many discussions about slidding rails, hitting jumps, skiing bc and pow.

2. Non skiers who are not your friends, well these people may look down on your but it depands on if they are open minded or not. Most freeskiers (not all and not stero typing) dress more urban. So they think we are all thugs and don't understand, the way to make them understand is to enducate them.

3, is the non freeskier community on the mnts. I see these people as hating us the most, this comes from many different reasons. One is that the have had run ins with a member of the community that is rude. First impressions last the longest. Second reason is that they are set in their ways, and don't understand, again I say educated these people.

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

Summer is cool, it is a way to earn money (even though I work all year) so you ready to do what you love in the winter. I do not ski in the summer.

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

The freeskier community is a tight knit community, but the problem is there is way too much hate. I get so sick of people hating on pro (Tanner and Dumont for example) why hate we are all out there doing what we love and that is to ski

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

sorry these questions are pretty shitty, but i dont really know what to ask and im pretty confused about how to write this.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

non skiers are somehow similar to me, i guess everyone is passionate about something and skiing is my thing, non skiers have other interest such as other sports or hobbies, skiing is not only a sport but a way of life and other people have other ways to live according to what they do.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

haha i think they think we're silly and weird, they dont understand how 5 months of skiing is not enough for us so we have to hike after the season ends and have backyard setups. Only we get it.

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

hmm... how i do i feel about summer? yeaah I hate summer, i wish i could live in utah in the winter then move to new zealand during summer! my life would be complete. In the summer I hike until may/june depends on the season and go to mtn. hood.

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

we're all connected and can relate to eachother, we all have very similar interests, style and way of life.

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

its awesome meeting other nsers in real life!!!

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

alot of them look like posers if they dont even do any sports. usually someones true personality isnt really affected by the sport they do so there can be asshole non-skiers and skiers. what i hate is when someones like "oh i ski also i have parabolic skis"

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

when people see skiers actually in action and not just claiming away i think they get a glimps into what skiing really is. but its almost impossible to make someone fully understanding what freeskiing is all about through words. its like explaining colors to a blind guy

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

i feel incomplete during the summer. i love hitting summer rails and trampolining yeah

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

we might not agree on politics or styles and stuff but we all understand each other when it comes to skiing

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

bang me like a hammer, pee in her butt, my ankles are broken, cool story hansel

1. I view non-skiers as people who may not be fortunate enough or open-minded enough to experience one of life's and natures greatest gifts.

2. Alot of people just don't get it. Even in Boulder and Summit/Eagle people always assume I am a snowboarded because of the way I dress, etc. Most people in the non-skiing parts of the world have no idea that skiing's culture has evolved like it has.

3. I like skiing powder most, but I do ski in the backcountry all summer long. Its a great way to stay in shape in the off-season.

4. Compared to alot of other skiing communities I think NS people have the best style. I know alot of great skiers who dress like 50 year old gapers from Texas. I rarely ski park and mostly ski the BC but I wear baggy clothes cause they look cool and are more comfortable.

Good luck with the paper.

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

I wish everyone could enjoy skiing the same way that I do, but in reality that isn't possible. I have great respect for anyone who can be passionate about something, be it skiing, other sports, writing or anything really.

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

Most of my friends think I'm crazy, hahaha. A lot of people can't grasp the concept of having 3 or 4 pairs of skis, or destroying them on rails.

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

I've never had the chance to ski in the summer, I would be all over it if the opportunity presented itself. Usually I keep pretty busy during the summer, try to race downhill(mtb) a litte bit. Skiings always on my mind though.

4. What's unique about skiers/Newschoolers.com members?

No other sport IMO has the same community aspect as freeskiing/NS. The only thing that comes close is Pinkbike for mountain bikers. But when you really think about it this is the first and only freeskiing forum. In what other sport do 95% of the participants identify with one website?

5. If you can think of any other info that you think will be helpful to me PUT IT ON HERE

ummmmmmmmmm...... I got nothing

1. How do you (a member of the freeskiing culture/Newschoolers.com) view non-skiiers?

i think to myself "they dont know what theyre missing"

2. How do you think non-skiiers view you? (for instance if they see you hitting urban, and didn't even know skiiers did rails)

probably as a little unbalanced. if i was not a skier, and saw someone with skis strapped to their back on a 65 degree day in august, with hardly any snow in sight, i would think said said person was kind of crazy

3. How do you feel in the summer? Have you ever skied in the summer? (backyard set-ups, ice rink urban, Mt. Hood, Whistler.)

summer is cool and all- tubing and golf and whatnot, but its no winter, thats for sure. i have skied in the summer. this year, i got june, july, and august. it helped with some of the boredom/ snow obsessing.

thats all ive got...
