When snow is wet/slushy it has a reaction freezing the surface of the snow. The warmer and wetter the snow the more impressive. If it's warm as fuck you're still going to have to salt it semi often but the ruts will be a lot lower.
Sort of like when you get a good freeze overnight and the sun bakes the surface and it peels. You're cutting in but the base is still there. Had you not salted you might have 1' slush trenches.
As mentioned it won't have that same effect when it's cold. Water is a pretty easy deal if it's cold, also propane tank with a torch .
Just make sure in either setting your in run/takeoff are nice and smooth first. If it's water it might put some low spots in. Move it around to get a consistent surface, and keep the surface smooth before it freezes.
