Question on chairlifts

so as my friend and I were riding up the park lift at keystone, we were talking about chairlifts..

and i said that at the end of the season they take the lifts not used in the summer, down; like the chairs and cables. Is that right?

if thats not right, I also thought they have to change out cables or something once a year too.

is any of that right?

im about 99% sure they dont take them down in the summer, depending on the resort maybe? and i doubt they replace cables every year, but im sure they have an in depth inspection

None of that is even remotely right. They may remove chairs from the line for routine maintenance, but thy don't take them down. That's a huge waste of time and money. However, they do remove the pads from the chairs to protect them from the sun.

no.

lol i go up to my resort in summertime and thats completely ridiculous, where would they put it?

and the cables are crazy thick, and are designed specifically to do what they do, and again, it would be insanely inefficient to change them every year.

yea. cuz after i said that, i was like, that cant be right. thats a helluva lot of chairs and stuff. and proceeded to then say, I dont know i'll ask NS.

i meant more of an inspection of the cable. not actually have to put new ones up.

but thanks tho. and the rest of you who answered my question

Wow your a huge asshole.

OP, most resorts take off the chairs each summer and every few years ( I think its 5, im not sure) they swap out the haul rope (cable). Swapping the cable is a huge job though thats forsure

My resort Moves the chairs every 2 years or so. They leave em all up in the summer but remove the pads from sun damage. They slide each chair forward about a foot every 2 years or so, so that the cable does not get worn out where the chair grabs onto it.

yea. cuz i'm pretty sure my small home hill at least takes off all the chairs on the whopping 4 lifts they have.. so i wasnt sure what big resorts do..

guys lay off the heat im not sure about cables but it is not rare for mountains to remove chairs i see a whistler during the early season i.e. look at the peak chair in opening week no chairs

i was in chamonix over the summer and besides the lifts that are used for hiking/servicing restraunts, all the chairs come down.

you get to the bottom of a lift and there are lines of a hundred some chairs. it keeps the cable from stretching during the summer, so it doesnt need to be replaced as often from the use in the winter

if you look up you can normally see lighter shades of black/grey, and occasionally yellow paint where the chairs have been prior seasons.

I've only really ever seen them remove the chairs on a quad or the gondolas. Never just like a double or triple.

At the cottonwood resorts they leave them up unless they are doing specific maintenance. They often take the chairs near the bottom of the lift off, I assume this is to keep people from playing on them...

I was just gonna mention this - up on Le Brevent, all the chairs are stacked at the lift station during the summer.

This is due to storms etc, reducing wind induced loading on the cables and pylon interfaces that are static. because they sit static all summer, the same parts of the cable are in constant contact with the tensions / rollers at the pylons, with the added weight of chairs and win, the dynamic, cyclic loading induced on these points repetitively can potentially create weaker spots on the cables.

These chairs were mostly modern quads and sixpacks, and they simply count them in and remove them / stack them, then come winter, unstack, mount and count them out.... inspecting the cable at the same time.

Some of these chairs in the alps are in much more exposed locations though, so whether they do it in America i guess depends on the location / risk to leaving the chair loaded.

Exactly. But my mountain has white paint. N My resort doesnt have nething tht big... Highest is a normal speed quad. Thats why they dont do it tht often.
