Question for you guys that don't use poles...

So I could care less whether you use poles or not on the hill, I won't judge or give any shit. I can just say I will always use poles, as they are an integral part of skiing. BUT, I was wondering if you guys ever learned to ski (like proper turning, using pressure on the edges of the ski to initiate turns, wieght forward to give better control, pole planting, one smooth arc for a turn, etc.). I was wondering if some of the new generation of skiers don't like to use poles because they began on twin tips and never learned how to really ski, they just started out with hitting tables and rails. This seems like the most logical answer to me, as poles are a pretty important part of skiing, even jumping.

For those of you in which this is the case, I recommend you take a few days, and use your poles and get someone to show you how properly. I guarantee it will change your whole perspective, poles will really make you a much stronger skier, and could improve your jumping ability as well. I honestly do feel that those of us that started out years ago in this whole "freeskiing" movement will turn out to be better skiers, because we grew up skiing first, and jumping second. I still did a lot of jumping and building jumps in the late 90s, but moguls and racing was something that occupied a lot of time as well.

I don't know if I do.

I have been skiing for about 18 yrs now, but when I do, I pretty much don't use my poles. Don't get me wrong, I like them and don't think skiing without them is for me, but when I really look at it, I probably wouldn't need them. I think that since they have been making skis with sidecut, a whole new way of skiing has been developed. That short quick little turn thing is somewhat obsolete, or should be. The only place this can still come in handy is in really steep stuff, and then I am thankful for poles.

i read about half your shat post. skiing with poles to me is less natural than skiing without. pole planting makes skiing real gay.

to progress, rules must be broken.

i dont really care abotu the subject, because i have not used poles for a few weeks ( because of a broken arm) and i didnt notice much of a difference, although it was a little difficult starting, just because it was a different experience. pollard uses no poles, and poles and he turned out to be an exceptional skier. so i think it could go either way depending on the skier.

i agree...kids now just start skiing in the park wehere all u gotta do is go straight.....most kids now dont take time to really learn how to really use ur skiis and make them do what u want...i grew up learning to ski with my dad....i didn start using poles till after i came back to skiing from snowboarding and blading...istarted when i was 2 then when i was about 10 i stopped for a year...then i snowboarded and snowbladed....on snowblades i always felt real occward...and as soon as i got back to skis the poles just felt more comfortable and i got back into my rhythm...

i think some one had a signature on here that explained it best...

skiing with no poles is like getting a blow job...feels good untill u look down and realize ur gay...

somethin like that...

Andy mahre doesn't use poles and hes one of the sickest rides i've seen. hes got one of the most stylie zero spins

who cares if someone doesnt use poles.. pollard , griffin cummings, and all those guys at hood who pretty much invented this shit, use to rock no poles, and it did good things for thier skiing,.

ive been skiing for like 2 weeks at the end of march and ive always used pole and i got twins...idn what i would do without poles

obviously if you are skiing big mountian lines you use poles, but when skiing park they arent really nessecary, although I still do think it looks awkward. People can do what they want.

poles r nice, makes me feel complete, without poles i feel weird and like a dumbass

of course i use poles in backcountry conditions and powder and such, but if i have a day of park skiing on my hands (which is often) i will normally drop my poles for the whole day or at least half of it. it helps you to become a better skier, not having to rely on two sticks for balance.

AND i skied since i was 5 years old (11 years) 9 years of those i never went into the park just made turns and such and took lessons

there's a difference between haviing poles and using them, some people just hold the poles in their hand and never use until the lift line. I myself learned to ski without poles until i was like 7 and then started to use poles as i progressed onto harder and harder terrain. There's nothing wrong with no poles, when on groomers i rarely ever use my poles. I just have learned to ski with them and fell inadequate without them. Some people just dont need poles to ski and I respect that

I dislike not using poles. When i use them it makes me feel more at balance. And when you dont use them your arms look weird just sitting there doing nothing.

No, you are a fucking idiot, and if you think Andy sucks at skiing, go to poorboyz.com and watch the war teaser until you get to the big fucking zero spin over pyramid. Then leave this site permanently.

No poles in the park makes it ridiculously easy to hit grabs, I did it once in a while last year before I got hurt and could actually get true noses consistently (I can't anymore, but I had shorter skis then). It still feels weird to me to ski without poles, though, so I don't, but there's nothing "wrong" with it... whatever makes you happy.

^i agree with thatguy.

and poles are def. part of skiing. the pole plant pretty much starts the turn. i did my time learning how to really ski before getting into freestyle and i also spent two seasons on snowblades without poles. so from all my experiences, i know there is no way i could have been as good of a skier noiw without poles. plus, the only skiers i have ever seen actually ski for real without poles are snowbladers and i dont count that as skiing. i have never seen a poleless skier actually ski right outside of the park.

i take it you are from the midwest, as i am. i dont consider "skiing" to be skiing at all here, with or without poles.

hahaha yeah I agree with that.

I'm originally from WI but from 2000-2004 I lived in Oregon and skied at Mt. Hood and Bachelor. During that time I spent 6 months in Chile skiing Portillo and other places. Then all of last year until just a few weeks ago I lived in Colorado and skied Keystone,Vail,Breck, Abasin, etc. so I actually havent really skied much midwest snow in a while.

I'm looking forward to it again this summer, back to ice and 300ft vert. I actually miss it, its a lot more personal and the people seem much more friendly

As the pole thing, I used to get all worked up about people not using poles. I used to think "Damnit, you guys are ruining real skiing, and speeding up its downfall into no-talant mainstream crap." I still think that, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I am the minority here, and not going to change anything. I think its just because I'm older and have been around the skiing scene for a while.

So my new outlook is...more power to Andy Mahre and these dudes who ride without poles. I'll stick with my poles even after everyone else out there has dropped them. Makes me feel like a whole skier, but then again Mahre is a better jibber than I am so what do i know.

i think it looks kinda gay without poles too cause it gets closer to Miniskiing and fruitbooting.... which isnt a good thing. But I disagree about all that 'correct form' bullshit. Thats the reason i quit skiing in the first place to go snowboard cause i didnt have to worry about that, i just strapped in and hit the park. When i switched back, and bought some twins i spent about 2 hours trying to get my 'form' back and then hit hte park from then on. I say whatever works is good form

it's all personal preference, i think its fun riding no poles sometime but i do ride with poles most the time. do what you want, who cares what people think

i like how most people like to look like goofballs and try to make all their turns the same...oh i mean use poles. isnt that what poles do to you? fuck park. started riding without poles out of the park first.

i use poles, and i always have used poles. i noticed that since i have been freeskiing i have depended less on my poles. (keep in mind that i ski mostly park). they are no longer as important (but still very crucial) to my skiing as they were before. i still will never stop using my poles, i think theyre an important part of skiing.

i reakon poles are a massive gain for balance in freestyle but would probably help to take them away to train, anyone people without poles just look like a liftie to me.

i guess if u worked with out them and progressed farther in ur skiing then went back it would be easier to get to the point that u were without polls..but its just weird lookin i guess...most of the kids at my mountain that rock no poles are snowbladers turned twin tippers that really arent twin tippers cause there skis are so damn short...

not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand but what really pisses me off is snowbladers with poles....wow that heats me

I like skiing with poles. But, they get in the way so much with a lot fo the stuff I do, so I can totally understand dropping them. Pollard, after entering a comp where it was mandatory to use poles learned that they help a lot to help him counter rotate and a\other stuff I can't rememebr right now. I don't think I will drop them cause I need them so much to get speed on my tarp in run for my backyard rail. When I think of no poles I think of pete mithofer(sp?) in stereotype. He's a good skier, but the style just wasn't great. If a skier has really good style and his hands aren't all over the ploace, then I don't care about poles or not.

i cant take him[liam downey] seriously cuz his name reminds me of that downy bear from back when i was a kid -d loc

I don't deny there are bad things in the US right now, hell, 51% of the country to be exact. But god damnit, our country being fat is NOT a problem. I do't give a shit how fat people are. hell, fat kids are harder to kidnap, that means our country is safer.

-Melvs

I think that poles are unneccessary for park and rails and stuff, but when it comes to skiing lines and skiing in tight trees, it would be alot harder to ski without them...that's just from personal experience. But if people want to ski without poles, let them ski without poles.

i belive that poles are relly important, especially outside of the park. they help to initiate truns, get your weitght forward in steeps, which allow you to make more agreesive turns. they're not as neccisary on groomers and the park tho. im a ski instructor, and i lots of the excersizes we do on like PD days, we dont use poles at first. it wuld be too much to think about at fisrt. fisrt, you learn what you need to do with the rest of your body, then re-introduce the poles. i find for me useing poles helps me keep in rythym, and it looks alot cooler. as a instructor, i have to ski alot witgout poles, (olike when im with lower level skiers). sometimes id take my lessons into the pipe, to practise felxion and extension and stuff, and it feels really awkward in the pipe without poles.

i think its no problem not using mpoles i mean think about it.

Poles are incredibly light-wieght, what do they do for your skiing in the park other than just get in the way and break? i mea ncom on you arnt gunna be pole plating in th park, and it s way easier to grab without holding onto something.

Whoever said skiing without poles is gay. Thnk it over before you say it.

Its like a fashion statement for park skiers to have poles.kinda like fur hoods, everyones like "oh man tese re bad, atleast i look good because if i look good im a better skier!!!1!!!"
