do you still keep your hands out in front of you for edge control/forward pressure? Seems like if you kept your hands besides you (like a park rat) you would ski like shit all-mountain

I use poles.

I keep my arms infront of me arround my thighs I guess. Also, why does it matter what I or anyone elts does ?

who cares, poles or no poles, doesnt effect ur overall park skiing, i dont ride with poles all the time , mostly cuz the lifties wont let me on with out baskets and i break my poles alot but for the most part who cares

when u ski park without poles for a while then u strap on some poles, its improves ur style

haha dude. i dropped my pole getting on the lift tuesday because i wasn't paying attention. nobody brought it up because the place was empty, so i had to ski down with one pole to get it. i felt all unbalanced and wierd and shit. i don't know how you could do that.

 
when I broke my wrist I skied with one pole. I had to keep my empty hand up and in front of me otherwise I felt really off balance. I would think that riding with no poles would do the same... but after awhile you would probably get used to it.

why do skiers use polls? they don't serve much of a purpose. andy doesn't ride with poles most of the time. i think it's sick. shut up.

 
I did a 3 without poles, and it ended up making me go so off kilter that I did a really neat cork 3, but then I brought'er around and rode away like I'm whats happenin'. I then proceded to putting my poles back on.

I saw a kid in Whistler over the summer who was skiing without poles. He was way better than me at rails, but he looked like a fag.

 
i just dont understand. i ski with or without poles. but if everyone doesnt want rules in freeskiing...then why is using poles rule #1. fucking hypocrites.

poles are all about balance. without them, well its just hard to stay up. man i dunno, nothing against them, but those kids i see riding without kinda freak me out.

why use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice?

GOOD SKIERS CAN SKI WITHOUT POLES... the poles are for balance

if it feels wierd skiing with out them, then u need to work on ur balance and shouldnt b shitting on the kids who ski without em bc they are better than u anyways.

All the people I have seen without poles ride out of the park with the airplane style arms spread out for balance which if they just had poles would take care of that

i did exactly the same thing a few weeks ago.. it was my first day at whiteface. it felt soo weird. oh well i'll be doing that again tomorrow at d camp...

I keep my hands out in front of me when i ride nopoles, most of the time i guess. I rode some pow and some steeps this year nopoles and it was dope. Guess what, i haven't sprained my thumb this year at all :), although i dont ride nopoles all the time. Ive done it alot more than ever.

Riding switch is about 50 times easier.

I am also a freestyle skiier.That means I do moguls and aerals.I always wear poles.I just feels comfortable.

But in aerials,you can't have poles. So I obey the rules and don't have poles when I flip. Yes my hand are usually in the front to have some pressure in the front of the boot.

Responsability,what's that?
 
i have a few friends that totally rip it up..and they ride no poless...when i say rip...i mean regular 270 on to switch up from flat to the down part of the rail to 270 off....just ill..but anyways...the reason they do it because they ride at Hyland Hills in MN, which there is a tow rope where u get like 400,000 hits in in a few hours...so its a pain to have poles on a 100ft vertical hill... I tried it once to...pretty chill...i like it my arms were free and you get no poles in the face or wrist crap..you can grab better and grab with your whole hand...but anyway...Its fun..but they use poles like when riding back country or real skiing...if you know what im saying...

just ski the same...

not much to it when ur in the park...hands at the side..or grabbing the skis when ur sliding shit...just ride for a little while and get comfortable...because its a little weird at first..But nice......enjoy the duck waddle..ha ha

Pollard skied without poles for a long time, and 99% of you drool over his style.

Andy doesn't ski without poles and he is sick as hell and has more style than 99% of you.

Move on with your life. If the most pressing issue in your life is why people choose to ski without poles, you live in a fantasdy land.

Open up your eyes. OUR SPORT doesnt need this kind of mindless bullshit.

Pollard moved our sport forwards. Mahre is moving our sport forwards. Now all of you need to stop bitching about poles or no poles and start moving our sport forwards.

im just curious WHY you do it... i dont feel off balanced when i do it, but i just feel retarded with my arms just sitting there. but what bothers you so much about poles that you dont want to use them?

prolly like 120, me and bob white (linesnowblades) hit it once and the same time and went so big out blades fell off!!!!!!! We were like shit our blades just fell off, thats not supposed to happen!!!! What a day.
 
it's a seperation of upper and lower body. without poles to fall back on , your balance becomes much more centered. if you don't need to use poles for balance it makes everything look better when you pick them back up.

and it's really not as if every person you see without poles rides without them all of the time. seriously, get over it.

i suggest that everyone who always loves to rag on pole-less riders try riding for a day without poles. it's actually kinda fun. when you grab it feels better getting a full palm on things. when you carve and lay down a nice one, you stretch out and 'pet' the snow much like a surfer does a wave. alot of training programs involve non-use of poles as a way to improve balance so you could also argue it makes you a more balanced skier. i do feel that poles can act as a bit of a crutch in some situations.

personally, i ski with poles. i find they can add to style when wielded correctly and that they are quintessential for mountain mobility. plus they make great weapons/skewers. but there is much to be said for riding without poles and conformity is whack anyways.
