question for college students and computer nerds

pcmag rates sony and toshibas the best. i got a toshiba and its sweet and less expensive then the sony. also id go for the p4 instead of the centrino becasue my mom has a centrino in a dell and mine is way faster and more reliable.

 
Uhhh... consumer reports says Toshibas blow goats. They also have the deplorable pratice of using old technology (233mhz RAM anyone?) and disguising it as new technology by not listing indepth specs. And I dunno where you're getting the P4 thing, battery time alone should justify the purchase of a Centrino, it's processor speed rating (and efficiency) are far better than a P4. My 1.4 Cent runs Star Wars Galaxies and Halo at high resolutions and I get pretty good fps with a Radeon 9200P. But laptops are, for the most part, for school. By the way, Consumer Reports seem to think that Gateway makes the best PC laptops, while Dell has the best service/repairs. I'm not too sure about that, but still... get an Ibook. For the love of God and all that is holy, get an Ibook. I have several nice PCs, and I never use them. This thing is so awesome.

well pc mag takes a poll everyyear from their readers and sony and toshiba were on top followed by dell. i guess if u never have ur laptop plugged in u could get a centrino but its performance is not even close to the p4. my moms new dell centrino is a 1.4 ghz and my toshiba with the pentium 4 both with 512 ram smokes it. her centrino is also very slow running program like photoshop and other programs that take up a lot of ram while running.

 
if centrino's were as powerfull/more powerfull then p4s they would be avalible in desktops!

get an athalon 64 or an athalon xp + (if you can;t afford the 64) AMD e you the most bang for your buck!

I thought the whole idea of the Centrino chip was to make a chip optimized for laptops. So why would they put that in a desktop?

the centrino is designed to use less power making ur laptop last longer on battery. ya i was guna ask jd the same question, if centrinos were so great why doesnt alienware or dell put them in their gaming computers?? jus get a p4 unless your never guna have ur laptop plugged in. jus from experience the p4 is better

 
Because, they aren't designed for it. The system architecture in a notebook computer is very different from that of a desktop. It wouldn't be worth it to put Centrino in in a desktop; it would cost more and not offer enough by way of benefits over the P4, in that context, to make it worthwhile. There are a lot of factors that govern the effectiveness of your system besides processor speed.

mabey it really is better then the normal p4 but I guerentee it is not better then the P4 extreme edition or any of the other special editions they have out now.
