so next year i'm going to be a freshman at UVM and i'm going to need a computer. i really don't know much about computers, but i know i want a laptop, and i know i don't want to spend more than $1200. i want something that will be fast and powerful. any suggestions of models or where to look? oh yeah and i don't want an apple.

dells suck cock, sadly i would say just go to like best buy and say give me the fastest laptop for 1200 bucks, they have emachines, alienware, apple, and some others, so id say thats ur best bet

dont get an eMachine, alienware is mostly for games i think... get a Viao maybe but the best thing would be the iBook, or PowerBook for a bit more (used both these before).

^Not true, easy to get an Ibook for less than 1200, especially with education discounts. Never, EVER buy an Alienware laptop. They look cool and run fast... and their batteries last about an hour and a quarter. For sure, get yourself a 12-inch g4 Ibook. Right in your price range, and with good specs. I use an Ibook for school, and it's perfect for everything I do.

it might be worth the extra money to get an IBM or a Sony. but i guess thats up to you....

as far as speed goes: anything with a 2.0Ghz processor or faster is solid...

personally i wouldnt worry too much about harddrive size. you can always buy an external one if you need to. and unless you want to edit video on it or something like that, 40GB will do you alright.

What I'm planning on doing is buying a computer from UVM's computer depot. You get the educational price, they setup your computer for the school network and give you free tech support. To me it seems like the best option. Just check out http://www.uvm.edu/cit/mcsv/ or call them at (802)656-3067.

i wouldn't get a laptop if you're serious about using a lot of multimedia programs, like editing film and what not. Desktops come a lot cheaper, a lot faster, and with a lot more storage. But if you're just gona be downloading porn and typing papers and little shit like that get a laptop.

my dell is pretty sweet... powerful enough to run autocad, photoshop, etc... all at the same time. and it has a widescreen lcd thats pretty cool. i like it and the battery lasts like 4 hours...

 
Get an iBook like everyone says. Macs rule but if you're set on a PC don't get an HP. My girlfriend payed 1,400 for hers and it takes 15 minutes just to start up and probably 5-10 to start a program. It was like that right outta the box. Piece of absolute shit.

my hp starts relly relly fast, and is fast every whare. also it dosent take a fast computer at all to run autocad, the shitty slow comps from 97 at my school can run that program.

 
the new iBooks have OSX which is good, and most college discounts on the apple site are about $300. get an iBook.

autocad is terrible? what? its the industry standard for architectural drawings... if you want to start at all into the architecture profession you damn well better know autocad because thats all you're gonna be doing for the first 5 years of working in a firm.

 
i would say go to CyberPowerInc and customize your own, plus they are relatively cheap

^It's actually a fair bit faster than that, depending on when you bought it. More recent G4 processors have a much higer speed rating.

your gf's h probably sucks because it starts up a million programs when it boots up. My hp trucks at 2.65ghz. See i had an hp laptop, and that thing was a piece of shit I spent like $1900 on it and returned it for repairs 3 times then they finally lost it at the hp warehouse so they have me a $1900 credit. And that was pretty cool.

i got an emachines m3510

cost me 1300CDN and it easily compares with 2000 dollar laptops.

I had one hard drive failure with it but they send me a replacement without me having to send my laptop back to them, my new HDD arrived in 3 days and i installed it myself, then i send the bad HDD back.

15.4' widescreen is fucken amazing and 54g built in wireless

ibooks are pimp too but you have to deal with the whole mac thing.

im a college freshmen right now and im using a powerbook. i love it. with the internat airport extreme card i can hit up wireless internet all over campus and its quick as hell and the software and OS are rock solid. perfect.

don't get a viao. i have two friends with laptop/desktop machines and they both break all the time. they are both hating them now. i have a g3700 mhz ibook upgraded to 640 megs and it runs good. i've friend the logic board twice but it was my fault, if you get a mac GET APPLE CARE. (at student discount). i woulnd't buy through your school, they are most likely selling cheap machines.

and: yes a G4 or 5 is the equviilant to a pc processor that has more MHZ but the Athalon processors are similat to the apple processors in the sense that a 2.0 ghz Athalon is the equivalent to a 2.8 ghz Pentium. see what I mean, so you can;t jsut say that a 800 mhz G4 is the equivalent to a 1.5 ghz pentium or athalon because it is not true. it is brobably about the equivalent to a 1.0 ghz athalon and a 1.5 ghz pentium.... I am a diehard Athalon fan and also a diehard pc fan...

if there isa vireu that is fucking up my pc, I can just go into the task maniger and find it and end it's process. I don;t know if there is a way to do such a thing (or similar) on a mac but I sure as hell don;t know how. I fing windows open and enviting to use. mac, as an OS is just like 'this is the way things are and if u don;t like it fuck u!' it is not nearly as flexable!

you need to stop post-whoring. on my mac, right now, i have 7 processes, AIM, CodeWarrior, iTunes, Photoshop, Safari, Terminal and Finder. i don't need to worry about shit running on my comp that i dont know about. theres only like 3 viruses for Mac. just get Norton and you're virtually invincible.

First off if you are getting a laptop get one of your computer geek friends to format it and install only the stuff you are going to need biggest problem with most out-of-the-box laptops now is they come loaded with way too much bullshit. basically anybrand you buy with similar specs is going to be just as good as the next

Holy christ, how did THAT happen?!? I'm ashamed of that one. That would go in my own hall of fame if it still existed. And Jaross, using an old virt PC on a G3 was why YOU thought it sucked. New versions run it quite well on G4s. Also, I'm basing my 'Windows sucks' mantra on the 3 desktop PCs that I own. One's a brand new Dell that I never use.

DELLS SUCK ASS!!!!!!!! you need a custom pc that you can change to your every need and overclock (can you overclock a mac???) take a look at this not only are the computers over their extremly good and customizeable (I overclocked my pc by 120mhz, everything is still stock and it runs fine!) I also installed my own soundcard, hard drive, optical drives, and wireless card and all I had to do was take off the side panel (2 screws) and eveything was really easy to get to.
