Question For Canadians.

Now that the US and the Canadian dollar are roughly the same, what is happening to imported goods? I just bought a book the other day, and it still lists a appx mark up of 7 dollars for canadian currency. And apple marks its computers up several hundred dollars despite the exchange rate. Aren't you guys getting screwed big time? Oh also, how do you people drink with the price of alcohol up there?

Yes we are getting screwed somewhat. Some of the larger retailers are beginning to match the US prices and thus forcing the chain to follow suit, however it will take a long time to adjust - thankgod the big box retailers have takin initiative....the opposite can be said about the auto-industry.

Yes, booze is substantially more expensive, however - the money we save from free healthycare probably covers the liver problems.

Yeah, we're being screwed big time. In Vancouver though, we can travel across the border, shop for a day (i.e. EvoGear in Seattle), and head back north.

some stores like walmart will match prices. so if freeskier is 699 can and 599 american we pay 599.

and for the sake of macs, no clue havent bought one.

and about beer, like 15 for a 8 pack of keiths, +5 dollar booting fee sometimes, 20 for an 8 back is kind of bs. but i dont drink that often so i guess its not to bad in my case.

Prices are going down on other things though, ex. Cars are being marked down by 3-7 thousand dollars.

bahhaha

Seriously though, I was in Orlando last month and was crying to myself on how much money I'd be saving if alcohol was so cheap in Canada. I dont even smoke, yet I ended up buying packs of Malboros because the idea of $3-packs is so novel.

word, but still not as good as buying cars in the states, friend went down to the states bought a subaru, after taxes and everything he still saved about 2 grand

well cars cost about 30% more here and i was looking at some nixon watches... it was 310 here and 220 in the states for the same one..

yeah they still dont care and we get our asses ripped. thats why we go to the US or just order online. some stores do have like U.S. dollar sales, which really isnt a sale, its the real price.

There's a wide range of factors going on that determines the price of goods in a country, so having an equal Canadian and American dollar is never going to bring about complete price equity regardless. However, as the old products which were brought into the country while the Canadian dollar was low are replaced with products bought while the dollar is high, prices will tend to move towards the American ones. As pointed out earlier, high movement items such as magazines (monthly) will drop first, while low movement items (yearly and up) will take longer to adjust.

and we are the best beer drinkers in the world

And yes, we are gettin screwed, example, i bought a card yesterday for my dad and it was marked up by apprx 1.5 and i asked if I could pay in american instead (since i had american money on me) and they said no they don't do that. Same goes with books and such. However, we are slowly, and i stress slowly, prices are coming down. and for the alchi being expensive, i hate it especially because i live in ontario, and everywhere else the beer is cheaper, ex. quebec 24 of blue = under $24, ontari its around 38.

im glad some body figured that out, the stores bought the things with the lower canadian doller so just becuase the doller is worth more now it doesnt matter because they still need to make a profit. thats why companies like walmart that only keep their goods for very short periods of time can lower their prices so fast.

I bought lots of stuff off eBay and other American websites. Saved so much money. A good number of Canadians are doing that and custom inspection is so backed up. My dad ordered a special shirt (one of those pure ownage ones) for my brother for Christmas and for some reason it got shipped from Texas. It has been on the road for about 2 and a half weeks right now

when I came back from school and went to the liquor store I almost shat myself... a handle costs ~ $80 here, as opposed to 20-25.... and the cheapest 2-4 is like 30 as opposed to 15

needless to say, I only got half drunk once the entire break

beer actually isnt necessarily expensive here in Canada, just depends where you are... ive found its super expensive in vancouver, 40$ for the cheapest 24 usually, but if you live on the east you can get a 30 pack of coors in cans for 30$, cant beat that

oh yeah.. and I went to toronto yesterday and saw a shirt I bought recently in the U.S. for 100 compared to 60 there, and sneakers for 180 compared to 50 there... soooo wow

we're getting fucked pretty badly on beer prices and ski stuff too.

so i buy off ebay and brew my own.

Canadian car buyers are getting the royal screw right now. Its like $10-15 thousand dollars more for the higher end vehicles in Canada. The only difference in the production is the block heater (200 bucks) the cocking around the doors and windows (maybe a hundred?) and French/English labels and service. The car dealers attribute the difference in price to "market demand", otherwise known as bullshit.

yeh im thinking bout buying my motorcycle in the states, its only $750 cheaper, but im not sure if it will be much cheaper after taxes n shit

retailers are not screwing canadians as much as you might think. take ski shops for instance, all the buying for this season was done last spring when the dollar was i believe in the $.70 area. because of this, canadian ski retailers would be losing a shit ton of money.

you can pretty much count on prices being lower next season as long as the canadian dollar is still strong in the spring.

you guys have no problems,

wanna see expensive then go to london, you'll pay 10 quid for a drink in a club, thats somewhere near 25 dollars i think, double that price for new years

i'm not to worried about that stuff, i'm just worried about my house its starting to melt. WallMart is selling its books and mags for the us retailded price, witch is awsome cause now freesiker dosent cost 7 dollars, i used the wrong witch by the way, im not sure how to spell the other one.
