Question concerning the building of a rail

Hey, me and some friends are gonna build a double kink rail/box type thing and it's going to be sitting in the snow for 12-14 hours a day and w eare scared the wood is going to rot away in the snow. We are wondering how you guys keep the wood from rotting, paint seems like it owuld just come off and be too expensive...we were thinking tarp or something but it owuld make the bottom slide..

make it out of metal...

or polyurithane the wood, that should keep it from rotting. Make sure you do more coats then it recommends since it will be sitting in the snow all day.

Or you could nail angle(a metal piece which is shaped like an L) to the wood, it would also hepl the box stay in place.

 
he has a point, just get good wood from like a store not a piece of bark ripped off ur neighbors treehouse

ya wood stuff gets rained on all the time but it doesnt rot. but if you are still worried then i suggest water proof paint thats what i use when makeing skim boards and it only scraps off when i ride over rocks.

put the stuff that people put on their outside decks at thier homes. keeps the wood seeled or something so no water gets in, varnish or something like that...might not rot then

 
the wood gets soggy after beign in the snow for about 1 day and loses the support... metal pieces is a though to keep it in its shape but that requires a lot of money... if not varnsih but thats expensive too... any cheap way of makign thhis rail without it falling apart?

it depends on the type of wood u r using. studs should be fine and plywood will hold up fairly well. Do not use partical or shake board. it wont last one day out in the rail. just lay it on a tarp and that should help.

 
We left ours out 24 hours a day 7 days a week for about 5 months, and we had no problems at all... it had just a wooden bases with regular 2by4s and 4by4s

It won't be a problem at all.

 
i have had rails that have been left out for 1 year that havent rotted. use pressure treated wood for the supports, and use plywood to cover the sides. itll protect the inner wood

 
Pressure treated wood? Its treated for that shit ya know! Its a little more expensive, but its worth it. It wont rott. Just use it on your bottem pieces.

If you are worried just buy some water sealent like they use on wodden decks. Like 5-10 bucks a can and can probally cover the whole rail. Thats what we did on my friends quarter pipe.

buy green treated wood. its more expensive but it wont rot.

Treated wood is good and sealing it will definitely protect it…I have a drop-in box in my back yard that has been covered in snow and hit with rain for about a month now and is still standing strong and I didn’t touch it with anything but I am sure it will eventually start to rot by the end of the session!!!…

 
if you are that worried, then dont use particle board or that other stuff, i dont know what its called, like press board or something. anyways, just waterproof the wood, like you would your deck

3/4 inch plywood for a box - green treated plywood would be even better but it is quite a bit more expensive. For a rail use greentreated 2x4s or 2x6s as a base if you cant use metal.
