Question about torn acl's

i tore mine about a month ago now and im supposed to get surgery this summer. but i recently went to another doctor a few days ago to get his opinion about it. he said that i can rehab it instead and if i worked real hard to get it back to normal then it might work. and he also said that a lot of people do this and dont get surgery including a bunch of football players and stuff. did anyone here completely tear their acl and just rehab it? if you did are you fine right now and skiing just as hard as you were before?

yea i know you can rehab it when its not fully torn because mike wilson did that but im not sure if the other doctor i went to knew if mine was a slight tear or just completely torn, because mine is completely torn

1) that sucks about your knee, injuries are bitches.

2) you are young enough that you may not need the surgery despite the complete tear.

3) i would go with surgery, seems like too many variables with just straight rehab.

Get it fixed... from personal experience, i have had the surgery on both knee now and it makes it a hell of a lot better, trust me

i'm pretty sure that if you don't get surgery, you're knee will just give out sometimes or some shit...

not 100% sure tho

what if i rehab it and wear a brace the whole time, would that be alright? because i was thinking of maybe rehabing it for this upcoming season and then after next year's season ends i could get it reconstructed then because i really dont wanna miss out on any skiing next season, plus im too short right now and i dont wanna be 5'3 for my whole life and im 14 so im still growing

Im a Athletic Training student, and don't just go w/ rehab for a fully torn acl. if it was partially torn, and you were willing to do all the work, then yes take that option. but w/ a fully torn acl, surgery is your safest and best option for a full recovery down the road

eddie, u gottta get the surgery, we all told u thats the best and safest thing to do. skiing with a brace will just hold u back, and ur acl wont be ready for 100% hard riding yet. get the surgery, and u will be much happier

my friend tore her ACL completely two winters ago at the begining of february of 2005. she had surgery done the summer of 2005. She had to sit out the whole season of skiing for 2006, but she was able to ski like she did before her tearing of the acl for winter 2007. so i don't know if this iwll help you'ze or not

braces don't do anything. after you have your surgery and do your physical therapy, you don't need a brace at all. they don't do anything but give you a little confidence.

I'm not sure about that, you are young but it seems like a short term solution. Without repairing it you could have long term problems when you're older (arthritis, or just not full use of your knee, etc)

get the surgery. you will just end up blowing out something else in the same knee cus all the other ligaments get overworked. bad idea if your a serious skier.

football players are rediculus! they do core training till they die...then they get to play football.

Think about when your 20, do you wanna have to go through all of this again later on when you will pay for it not your parents insurance? If you dont get the surgury it will bother you for your whole life and hold you back. You should just get it done now and have a short time of it. I know i wouldnt want 15 years of a nagging problem like that.

Yeah dude, you're only 14. Get surgury. Any rehab program that would be intense enough to recover from a fully torn ACL is going to be far to advanced for a 14-year-old.

im 15 and last year i tore my mcl and my meniscus and they had me in surgery within 2 weeks and 3 weeks later i wrestled and i had ripped my mcl in half and tore my mensicus to pieces

Yeah it depends how bad you tore it. If it's bad, I'd get surgery and after that the more strengthening/rehab you do the faster you'll come back. I tore mine riding moto, and was back racing in six months. I know pro's do extensive rehab and are back riding after 4 months.

DEF. get it repaired. i tore mine 2 months ago, and had it reconstructed 1 month ago. while i could stay fairly active without it, theres no way id have been able to ski, at least not how i want to. i had an allograph, where the ACL is reconstructed from a cadever hampstring, and while i was hesitant at first, im glad i went that way. its been 1 month, and i could limp without crutches 4 days after surgery, and youd never know i had it now. yes, my ACL hasnt grafted yet, but i am able to get around and be fairly active. its a roughly 6-7 month recovery time to almost 100% strength, so ill be good to go by ski season. id reccomend doing it asap, even if you miss a month or two of the season, do it, youll fuck yourself up even worse without it, and itll most likely be the kind of thing thats either unrepairable or years of recovery to regain.

if your worried about getting back on your feet asap after surgery, allographs are the way to go, since theres no big cuts to heal, etc etc, autographs (hampstring or petela) take ALOT longer to recover from, at least before your back on your feet (think months instead of days), but petela graphs get thier full strength back a bit sooner, but not enough to let it be the deciding factor (im ny opinion). also, BIG downfall is your taking material away from other areas of your knee to fix another.

either way man, it sucks, but its honestly not too bad. as long as you just do what your supposed to, and take it easy, you can DEFINATLY be back in the game next winter. no ACL and a brace is not a solid substitute for a functioning ACL.
