Question about PT

I've

been going to physical therapy for about 3 months now. I started going

to The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Murray, Utah for my knee rehab

in early May. This was my first real injury so I went into this whole

process pretty naive to the way things work and just assumed that the

treatment I was getting was as good as it gets. I walked down the hall

and saw all the signed posters from professional athletes and thought I

was getting top notch care but I'm starting to question whether all

orthopedic centers are equal.

1. Did you guys use an ultrasound machine?

2. How up-to-date on the latest research was your therapist?

3.

Did you feel like the the treatment you got was specific to you or was

your therapy identical to other people regardless of age and goals (did

you have the same routine as the middle aged fat ass that's never skied

in his life)?

4. How closely did your therapist work with your surgeon? Did they communicate often?

Thanks

for your answers. I'm getting frustrated with my progress and would

really appreciate any advice from anybody who has been through this

before. I'm about to say fuck TOSH and start going to the University

Orthopedic Center.

i sprained my mcl this past winter. no surgery was necessary but my PT routine involved an ultrasound machine and my routine was definitely specific to me

Well, as an Intern at a Physical Therapy Center, being a PT Aid, I can say that a lot of the less specified exercises/stretches will be the same from person to person as they are for building back some of the Range of Motion or Strength that was lost in the injury, but as you move forward in your PT and get better and better, they may start you on some more specific stretches or exercises.

As for ultrasound, yes this is a very common practice.

I struggled with my ROM for a while. I was badly scarred in from my mcl repair and also from being non weight bearing due to my meniscus tear. So it was a whole month before I could ride the spinner to warm up. This means that for the first month I was stretching cold. Now that I know a little more I believe that it wasn't doing me any good to work on my ROM without properly warming up. From talking to other people if I had gotten some ultrasound to warm up I could have saved a lot of time and pain.

TOSH has without a doubt some of the best surgeons in the country. Although I definitely think there PT department isn't quite top notch after going to PT for about a month now. I feel like they don't adhere to more modern healing techniques and sciences. I'm in the same boat as you unfortunately and I am thinking about making a switch to a different facility. Been reading up a bunch on Cold Laser therapy as well and might try and find the right doc that knows what he/she is doing with that whole remedy realm.

Exactly this.

I want all that shit. I had a complex knee rebuild. I really blew that shit up. I want PRP therapy, cold laser, ultrasound... whatever I can do to make my recovery more efficient.

Are you currently going to the facility in PC?

iv been lucky enough to work with some very experienced physical therapists and message therapists for my injuries. torn mcl, torn hammy with strained sciatic nerve. they definitely made a specific recovery plan for me especially because my activity level requires a very high level of fitness and strength.
