Qualified ski patrolers should be allowed to administer first aid

I'm typing this with one hand because i dislocated my shoulder today. took a cliff in some trees and stomped it but was going too fast thru tight moguls and trees and went down at a bad angle. when the patroler finally showed he actually told me that he knew how to put it back in but was legally not allowed to do it. after arguing and asking him to do it i then asked for some pain killers and was told he couldnt give me that either. i ended up spending over an hour with my shoulder out and no pain killers because noone was technically allowed to give them to me. im sure there are good legal reasons for this but obviously from my point of view it was complete bullshit.

ya pretty much all resorts are like that same thing happened to me dislocated shoulder sp* and had to wait 45 mins to get it put in no pain killers or anything. pretty dumb but it just covers the mountains ass

it's quitte easy actually, even though they know how to fix it, they are not qualified to make the diagnosis, you need a) a doctor and b) x-rays or echo. To diagnose a dislocated shoulder (it could look dislocated and iun fact be broken as well wich would do more damage than good).

And about the pain killers, they won't give them cause at the hospital/doctor he needs to be able to examine you...

If it's not life threatening they won't do much.

I know, i'm a nurse and paramedic

i was with a friend when this happened one time and the ski patroler told me how to put my friends shoulder back in the socket. it was really gross feeling

wow thats f'd in the a... and its all because they dont give the patrollers a little piece of paper saying they can put your elbow back where it fukn should be.

As a ski patroller I know its all about liability. As for resetting your shoulder and stuff, while we have training on how to recognise and treat (control) the range of injuries we encounter we are not medical professionals. There is always a chance of doing more damage in an attempt to repair a problem without a full evaluation. Even a paramedic cant just go around resseting dislocations. Its the same for drugs. Drug reactions are a HUGE problem. I know in quebec we legally cannot even posess tylenol while on our shifts...and paramedics cannot administer drugs either.

We refer to ourselves as the packing and shipping department of the medical chain. We attempt to stabalize the patiant and put them in a possition of most comfort to be transported to advanced care.

The guy was only doing his job, and I know how that feels. Sometimes we are limited to what we can do, but theres pretty valid reasons for it. We've dealt with many law suits over the years just operating within our limits, dont need to risk more

wow thanks for the insite, always good to know both sides of the story.

and to dan, hope your shoulder gets better quick man

I had the same thing happen to me. had to drive 45minutes to the hospital to get my shoulder reset while i was screaming at the world.. Morphine made it alll worth it

you babies cant put a shoulder back in by yourself? ive desroyed my shoulde twice in two seasons (one repair, little good it did) so my shoulder pops a lot.

its not hard, grab your wrist, make sure your elbow is bent a little bit, and your hand is in neutral position and then just pull it up with your good arm. itll hurt for a minute, yeah, but the pain goes away really soon.

At are hill the patrollers cant give you advil or tylinal sp? but they can show you were it is and you can take it on your own free will.

dude i had the same thing happen to me with my knee at kicking horse, they have the training but there are so many legalities that they can barely take you down the hill without a law suit

Wow thats gay!! But so american people are scared to get suit and they have the reason to be. U hava to change the hall system. But I understand these guys, guess they're doing the best as they can do. Although they want to do more they just cant

I made many crude and painful attempts to reset it myself but ive never learned the proper way. I was paying attention when the doctor did it to me tho and im gonna definitely look into the proper procedure.

Putting a shoulder back in isn't first aid unfortunately. There is a nerve and a lot of blood supple that runs through the shoulder that can be damaged while poping a dislocated shoulder back in. As far as drugs only people with a higher level of training can administer drugs. It's kind of gay but that's what happens when there are so many fucking lawyers in the U.S.

yahh ski patrol was almost convinced my shoulder was dislocated on sunday. go to the ER and find out i broke my clavicle..

im more than happy that they didnt try and pop it back in themselves because i wouldve been fucked.
