Pvc v.s. metal

Title says it all. I;m looking for the most ski life friendly thing for my summer setup so I dont bust my new whips.

PVC is much easier on your skis then metal. Banging metal edges against metal is going to cause them to crack, it's only a matter of time. Banging metal edges against plastic is a lot less hard on them and they may crack but it's going to take a lot longer.

Also I suggest you just buy a cheap pair of second hand skis, not point in smashing up your nice new skis on a summer set up. A cheap second/third/fourth hand pair of skis is always handy to have for summer set ups, urban, and rock skiing.

this makes no sense at all? could you please explain? in my experience with seshing metal donkey tubes and the pvc on my backyard setup, pvc is by far the winner, and is much cheaper. only con about pvc is that in colder temps, and you slam down on it too hard it can shatter. other than that, pvc doesnt really "hurt your base" the only thing that could be bad for it is the hot summer temps and getting dirt in your base. both can be solved by a hot scrape and some wax.

I dunno about this. The only way I could see this being possible is if you have one of those PVC rails with holes drilled for the screws in the top of the PVC - then your bases might catch on the holes. (But I never really understood that construction method anyway).

Idk about this you could be right but It doesn't make sense to me that some plastic could scratch you base more than metal could. I mean I'm not sure if this is a very good example but if you take a plastic key and run it down your car probably won't scratch it as bad a metal one would.

I'm not sure if you guys use the same technique as I do but I drill holes on the top of the pvc tubes so you can drill them down to whatever you are using, this is the only way I know how to attach them and its the only way I've ever seen people do it, but these holes will scratch your bases but it is minor, alos when you edges knick the pvc it can make little burs that will scratch your bases so its always good to have a piece of sand paper on standby to get rid of those

Drill from the bottom up into the pvc, that is the only way I've seen it done and it is the only way that makes sense.

Pvc is a fairly soft plastic, if anything the little "burrs" you see will get cut off by your edges before they even touch your base. I've never had any troubles with my bases getting scratched by pvc, and I would be surprised if I ever did. The worst part for bases is landing on dirt/ mud and the occasional rock.

PVC will be kinder on your skis for sure. But I really wouldn't use my new sticks on my summer set up, it's a sure fire way to destroy a pair of skis. Artificial surfaces burn your bases up pretty bad, and the small sediment particles from the dirt in your yard will damage you base further. If I were you, I'd just use a pair of beater rock skis on your summer set up.

100% agree with this. i drilled mine from the bottom of a 2 by 4, and up into the bottom of the pvc. also you are right on with the whole "bur" idea. my edges were pretty rough, and after seshing the setup the edges are super smooth. i was really shocked when i ran my hand down the edge and no burs at all underfoot.

i attached the pvc by screwing into the bottom of it like in the pic op. from the bottom of the 2 by 4 into the pvc. hope this is relatively helpful.

you two are talking about different things haha, he was talking about burrs on the pvc rail and you're talking about your ski edge.
