Its now called Durango Ski Resort? I've heard a couple weird reasons why they changed the name. Anyone know? Just bored and curious between classes

not even religious, but purgatory is the "inbetween" state between heaven/hell for when you're dead. maybe just didnt want that name associated with their resort?

interesting..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

my guess is that (as the other comment said) that they meant it to be like the "inbetween" place between heaven and hell- like earth is hell and skiing is heaven...maybe?

probably the heaven/hell thing but whether it was the resort owners or the companies that sponsor the hill's idea?

"Purgatory Mountain came into its modern day name in 1776 when several Spanish explorers traveling on the nearby Animas River. Some of their party were lost, and their bodies were never found. The other travelers believed the souls of the lost men would be relegated to Purgatory, and from this legend was born the designation, Purgatory Mountain. Following this legendary expedition, the river was named “El Rio de las Animan Perdidas” or the River of Lost Souls (now the Animas River). The ski area originally opened as Purgatory Resort in 1965, and we now operate as the year-round Durango Mountain Resort."

Yeah its called Durango Mountain Resort. I have yet to find anybody who calls it that here in Durango, everyone just calls it purg

Purgatory isn't where the devil lives. The devil lives in the inferno he is stuck in the frozen lake Coctyl. Purgatory is people that are bound for heaven but need to repent for their sins through service.

purgatory means between heaven and hell thats why the runs are called "mercy" and "no mercy" and "demon" and "pitchfork" and "paradise". and they changed it because a bunch of texans got sad and complained about the name

This is an old thread, but nobody actually answered your question... so here ya go.

After the resort went corporate, the marketing specialist for the company that owns Purgatory decided to re-name the resort "Durango Mountain Resort" because most people did not know where Purgatory Mountain was and they wanted the name to be associated with the town, they thought it would increase visits/sales...

It didn't work and now only tourists call it DMR and everyone who lives here calls it Purg...
