Nirvana didn't suck, but they don't deserve all they praise they get. They were just another band riding the coat tails of punk. They just hit mainstream and weren't as aggro as most punk bands, so they were liked.

First off punk isn't directed to skating. Have you not heard of Misfits, Ramones, Rancid, and Pennywise. These bands have been around for roughly a decade if not more.

and nirvana was not riding punks coatails. THey did play some punk songs, but most of their stuff was not.

read 'screaming Life', it talks about the GRUNGE scene in seattle in the early 90s and the other bands that were around that sounded similar to nirvana...they weren't riding on the coattails of punk at all, it was a whole different ball game than punk rock

Wow, people. I am surprised to see people's lack of acceptance of music that they aren't particularly fond of. Shit, just because you don't like a type of music does not mean that it automatically sucks. I like a lot of the stuff that you people probably hate, Blink, Taking Back Sunday, Simple Plan, and the fact that you label it as shitty fake punk/emo is offending and stupid. I have no problem with the fact that you dont' like those bands, but when you say that they're shitty bands, thats wrong. I dont like pennywise or thrice or some of those bands, but I'm not gonna label it as crappy music, just because it doesn't fit my tastes. Also, the whole argument over labeling bands into genres is pointless, cus they overlap so much, and there is no way to define any genre, so I recommend dropping that.

Stop confusing pop-punk for what it really is. Pop punk is like Rancid and the Descendants and NOFX and Bad Religion. Punk is Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedy's, Blag Flag, and The Clash to state the obvious ones. Bands like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte are not pop-punk. They are simply pop-rock that just happens to lean towards punk tendencies like powerchords and simple songs and all this stupid teenage-angsty shit. But seriously dude, Simple Plan is terrible. If you really like them, you should be able to find some other more talented bands that you should like a lot more. As long as it's not the F-Ups...(worst band ever).

nofx is not pop punk. nor is ranid or any other band you listed. blink, tbs, simple plan, they are infact pop-punk, and they lick balls. well rancid is starting to lick balls now too...sex pistols are a boy band that had lots of drugs, the clash and the ramones are alright.

I agree that bands like blink-182 and Sum 41 are not 'true' punk as it were, but does that make them less serious about it? i love all kinds of punk...everything from the Sex Pistols to Bad Religion to The Ataris (which is screamo and who cares if they sing about girls) to Good Riddance to blink-182. it dosnt matter! you go talk to those guys and do u think they'll give a shit about what genre theyre in? think about that

^There isnt really a punk mentality anymore. Punk died around '81-82. Obviously something like punk cannot survive for as long as it did, for as soon as it became 'cool' or popular, real punk died: the hardcore fans just stopped buying records and going to shows, and the others became new-wavers and post-punk revivalists.

Nearly every single band which has been mentioned come nowhere near punk, and im sorry to burst your bubble. While they may play music that sounds like punk, it really isnt. Even bands like Leftover Crack or A Global Threat, the epitome of 'we hate everyone mainstream' is just trying to breathe life into something that died a long time ago.

It may be punk music, but it isnt 'punks' who are playing it.

ReggaeConcept, if it sounds like punk music, why isn't it punk music? Stop making punk out to be some exclusive group that only a few bands back in the early 80's were part of. Punk has evolved. It isn't what it used to be, but that doesn't mean it isn't punk anymore. Why does there have to be such strict rules on what type of music is in a certain genre? Music genres aren't exclusive groups, they're just concepts people have come up with to define certain types of music, and they can morph and change and be inclusive of a larger variety of bands and music.

pop punk is puss as good charlott. nofx is a popular punk band, but not pop-punk. they do not write their music for the mainstream. it jsut gets picked up because it is good. good charlotte gears their music towards the pop crowd, making them pop-punk. and as a side not, they used to be a decent band, then they got popular, changed it, and now they lick nuts.

Wow, I can't believe I'm going back here to bring it up. Just because a band doesn't write music for 'mainstream' audiences doesn't mean they're not pop-punk (or punk-pop as it used to be known). Seriously, you can't classify NOFX and the Dead Kennedy's as the same style of music. There's similarities, yes, that's where the 'punk' part of pop-punk comes from. The 'pop' comes from the fact that the music and vocals are more melodic and harmonious, not some band like Crass screaming their lungs out about a shitty government over barely structured music. And I have no repsect for anyone that says labeling music is stupid. There is nothing wrong with labeling music, but there is something wrong when people like or dislike music just because of its label. So what if Blink 182 is just pop-rock. Just because it's punk doesn't mean you can't like it.

yes but Bliink 182 is a different type of music. they arnt in any way similar to Crass. atleast the newer punk bands have the same idea of anti-goverment as Crass, like bands even as popular as Pennywise. music types do change as they get older (example: Crass, Pennywise) but Blink 182 dosnt have much in common with either of those 2 bands. the very essence of punk music is the rebellous message, on top of the music that is not so friendly to say, the vergin ear and blink 182 misses this.

ok, pennywise and crass both have a message to their msuc. both are fast and loud. and bot are un polished although pennywise is a hell of alot more polished then crass, especially their newer stuff. really it is just the difference between old punk and new punk.

You can't say Pennywise is unpolished. They are far more polished than most 'real' punk bands out there. Plus, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh had a message to send, yet they aren't punk, so the message argument is not a good one to use. Pennywise may be good, but they have fallen into the same delimma most 'punk' bands have now: you can only be pissed at everything for so long.

Pennywise is on MTV now? How long has this been going on? I dont really like Land of the Free?, but most of the stuff before that was good. The Live album is so good.
