I personally don't think anarchy would be a good idea, but i still LOVE NOFX (of course i have no doubt that our gov't is corrupt, but that's besides the point) Too many people get the punk lifestyle mixed up with the punk music! They are different things and just because you're into one doesn't mean you have to be into the other. I love punk, hell my cousin is the drummer in the casualties. But i don't go out and spike my 'hawk and dye my hair whenever i go to a show. It's all about that music, cuz in the end that's all it is.

Of course I don't agree with everything they say. But the points I disagree on with them is stuff I can respect. It also results in me being exposed to opinions that I maybe wouldn't have been exposed to. I can listen to Anti-Flag and totally agree with what they have to say on tolerance of homosexuals and people of all races. I hate bigotry. I can agree with a lot of social commentary these bands sing about as well. Being a moderate conservative also doesn't mean I blindly support everything a conservative government does, especially war. I find that a lot of liberal punk bands are just pacifist in nature. I disregard pacifism as too idealistic, and I believe war is sometimes a necessary utility (sadly). I still enjoy the music and respect their message. Just because I don't agree with some liberal messages doesn't mean I'm not gaining something from hearing it.

 
I still think after listening to all this shit. Punk is what you make of it. Doing what you want to do and nothing less. If someone tells you not to do something and you really want to do it and you go and do it. Thats more punk than listening to a few bands and wearing a studded blet and all that shit. Punk is slowly dying, all the kids that listen to 'punk' as they call it today dont see the beginnig of punk as it was, with the Ramones, Sex Pistols and The Clash. They dont even know about the bands that influnced everything they listen to now a days. And thats whats killing punk music.

punks just being drowned by shitty bands like Simple Plan and GC. And stores like Hot Topic giving 13 year old GC fans the idea that spikes and chains make them punks. I'm not really a punk and I don't listen to a lot of underground punk bands, but I know what punk is and all these shitty bands and stupid people are ruining it.

its on a cycle. well, pop culture is losing its fascination with punk music once again, slowly the fad will die out, bands will be more underground and once again, only 'cool' people that liked it and understood it all along will listen to punk. that is until it goes mainstream again and every fag and his cousin has spiky hair and studded clothes. just another turn of wheel...

i dont even consider groups like good charlotte to be punk. its pop. pop is just short for popular and its noting more than popular music. punk will always be 'underground' and not mainstream.

The Clash is punk. They defined punk. London Calling is said to be one of the greatest albums to ever go on shelves. They paved the way for other punk bands, the bands who really were punk. Unfortuantely, today we have bands that ruin this tradition by turning punk into pop. Punk is dead on MTV, but punk still thrives in the clubs and streets waiting to make a comeback.

there is no completely effective way of tracing the roots to music genres, that is especially true with punk. depending on who you talk to there are tons of bands that are punk that you would never have thought of. so while it is easy to define the core bands of punk, it can be difficult to say what is not punk. (although good charlotte is definately not punk). some people say that the who, or fucking elvis laid the foundation for punk. look if you want some reliable answers go to a punk record store, not fucking sam goodie. or turn off mtv and go get a book about it.

You wanna know why punk is all of a sudden 'cool'? It's not cause your precious punk is being sold out to MTV. Its cause of punk's image as being rebellious against authority and some some jackass saying 'we'll pierce something and get pissed off, then we'll play songs about how much being a teenager sucks and sell millions records to kids who want punk in a bottle. All the people who get pissed off about simple plan cause 'they're killing punk!' don't even know what punk is. People who are truely 'punk' realize that this fake crap on MTV is completely unrelated to the punk that they love and live. I personally don't like true, old school, diy, 'punk', I like the stuff like millencolin and pennywise. The reason punk is getting sacraficed to the public is because of the appeal of the 'your can't tell me what to do.' image to people. Thats why you don't see anyone ripping off hardcore. the closest thing there is to ripping off hardcore is bands like Slipknot, and they don't even claim to be hardcore. they're 'nu-metal'. Why you ask? Simple, hardcore has the same badass image of punk, but it has an image of impenetrable brotherhood as well. MTV can't sell brotherhood and I am awful glad they can't.

I would approve if you died...
 
i listen to pop punk bands like homegrown, brand new and allister to get me pumped for skiing whats so bad about that. im a prep but i still rock out to punk rock. i dont give a shit that im not into anarchy and stuff anti flag and nofx sing about. as long as it gets me to throw down, i dont care. its good music.

 
There's nothing wrong with liking their music, at least to normal, intelligent, unbiased people. However, there IS something wrong with calling them hardcore and thinking you're a streetpunk because you listen to Starting Line and Brand New (i know, that's kind of pushing it...). People who like punk music don't care when poseurs listen to punk and pop-punk, they care when when poseurs listen to it and consider themselves all 'hardcore.' It's lying to themselves and others, and it's fucking annoying!

For one, punk is not dead. If it was then this thread wouldn't exist, right? And two, for those who are looking toward the future of punk, then it is this simple... Death From Above. These guys are living in a van, touring all over North America, just to tell everyone who comes to their shows to fuck off. Check 'em out. Three, what is destroying punk is VJs. George can lick nuts.

Physkic (or however your name was spelled....) you can't hate punk based on those people. Those people are poseurs, and they are the ones that are ruining the punk scene. I know quite a few 'punks' that are well aware of teh current world situation and are very intellectual individuals. I personally hate the American government in its current situation, and in general i don't really like Republicans. However power is corrupt, and likewise the government will always be, as well. Don't base your opinions about punks on what a few poseurs lie about. And the next time they recite some NOFX shit to you and try to sound intelligent, be a real punk and punch 'em in the fucking face!
