Punk music and politics

basically i posted this in another thread but i feel that it needs its own thread. i also added some stuff .

basically i am sick and tired of people saying that punk rock is corrupting people's politics (or atleast i am sick of people saying it is corrupting mine)

to clear one terribly misguided thing up, there are a fair amount of grown up individuals that have enever heard of punk rock (or atleast thought it dies in the 80s) that support Nader/are anti-bush. none of my opnions are created from listening to punk bands. mostly, my ideas come from talking with my father. he is a prutty damn smart man with a degree in Chemical engineering, Math, Law and a teaching license. basically, my belefes got me interested in punk rock, not the other way around. i like it becuase it represents my belefs, not becuase it fuels them.

i do pay attention to the news. i dont watch cnn or fox regurally but i do look through the paper and i also listen to NPR and i'll go to indipendant news sites somteimes.

on top of that, the vast majorty of atleast the popular so-called 'punk' bands dont have any political belefs that they let people publically know about. that is why pop-punk sucks.

actually, punk rock is bad music. if you like it, thats fine. just know that you have bad taste in music. three chords and some back up vocals do not make good music. if you like it because its high energy, and fun to listen to, that is acceptable. just dont say that it is good music, because 9 times out of 10, youll be wrong. (yes i do know that there are some punk rock bands who are tallented, and can play... this post goes out to all the other ones.)

Why does Anti-Flag suck? At least one of you can give a fucking reason to back your arguement up.

some of any punk bands songs are hard to play jsut becuase they are so faST BUT THAT IS not talent, just playing the same thing over and over again untill you can play it really fast.

i wasnt trying to say anything about punk music other then the fact that it is cirtanly not MY liberal fuel! i enjoy it becuase it represents some of my oppnions but i dont get my oppnions from it.

how the fuck did that happen... oh well...

anyway i could see why a conservative would say that Anti-Flag sucks becuase anti-flag is basically like 'fuck the preisdent, fuck the usa' and they dont exactly have in depth reasoning in their lyrics (usually). i like anti-flag alot and being a liberal myself, i dont think they need in depth lyrics to jsutify their oppnions becuase i can understand what they are talking about withought that

you may not think that they need in depth lyrics, but for them (the people who write the lyrics) they write like that to express the way THEY feel.

right, its not like they are giving statistics and stuff.

Would someone please give me 3 reasons as to why Anti-flag sucks or is pop-punk? Here are my 3 reasons for loving them: 1)They are intelligent people who sing about things that they and I feel strongly about which are extremely relevant today (the war in Iraq, the WTO, Bush, peace, freedom, corporate control), (not about the people they shot and the bitches they knocked-up or about some girl that broke up with them) 2)I really like their music. 3)They actually care about people. I was at warped tour last week and some kid started having a seizure in the pit. They stopped the song and said 'We need some EMS over here, right fucking now!' and they waited until the kid was carried out by the medical staff to finish the song.

And by the way, if you buy an Anti-flag CD, it will list sources to back up everything they sing about.

As far as punk rock and liberals...well, I'm not a liberal -- I'm a progressive democrat. Have you heard of Dennis Kucinich? He's a progressive who ran in the primaries. I wouldn't say punks are so much liberal as they are Anti-Bush administration. I never see kids at shows in John Kerry T-shirts, but there are 'Stop Bush' shirts everywhere. I mean I would vote for Kerry before Nader because I think Kerry is the only one who really has a shot at getting Bush out of office, even though I (and a lot of bands) don't agree with his stance on all the issues.

Oh, and punk rock isn't exactly about being rebellious. Bands like Anti-flag aren't anti-establishment, they're trying to unite a group of people to fight for our freedoms (not with a gun, I mean the freedoms that Bush and Cheney are taking from us through the Patriot Act, etc).

Ska is hard to play. I was in two ska bands.

1. theyve got rhetoric, rhetoric, rhetoric. i dont see them any different than lee greenwood or the gal that sings the song for sean hannitys show. always the extreme leftist views on things, it gets boring and very redundant.

2. theyre music is damned good. i always thought the bass player was rockin.

3. they are assholes. ive seen them completely turn people away when they try to talk to them and stuff. and the drummer called me a fucking asshole. uncalled for

no one said they were pop-punk. i like them alot.

why do 'punk' bands need to have a political view? and most of all... who cares what they think, they are not politicians. Punk overall sucks anyways, i do like pennywise though

There is alot of punk that I like, and I have my reasons for it. Yes, instrumentally it can't be compared to the long rock solos of led zepplin or the complexity of an orchestra, but it's high pumped up with powerful lyrics that really reflects a great deal of our society. We are a pumped up high adrenaline and aggressive generation. This can be seen in all areas, the growth of eXXXtreme sports, etc. Which is why punk music has been doing well.

I like alot of the lesser known bands who speak from the heart and send a positive message.

But, one of the things I can't stand about alot of the punk bands is their whining over politics. I've found in life that those who scream the loudest, are usually the ones that know the least (which is an old adage by the way.) No doubt that there are many intelligent punk rockers out there. But I'm going to generalize and say that the majority are uneducated, ignorant (by choice), uninformed, and beyond their 15 minutes of fame haven't accomplished much in their life. What makes them an expert on politics and how the government works? Have they been there? Have they seen with their own eyes? Have they been sent overseas to be shot at and watch their friends die? Have they been in war? Or do they even know much about it for that matter?

I get the feeling that a great number of these bands who are so quick to make judgements on how things should be done would answer no to all of those questions.

I have recently lost alot of respect lately for some of these bands. I was stoked to see guttermouth in concert and push myself up to the front row.. only to have the lead singer continually and intentionally spit on me. and Anti-flag shouts out 'Fuck the military.' That just infuriated me. Do they know that because average people, who are no different than them, are willing to put their lives on the lines and serve in the military, that we are able to enjoy our rights and freedoms?

Many of my friends are overseas right now and are risking everything.. just so this guy from anti-flag can say 'fuck the military.'

alright, first off that was well said kristie. second off and this goes to what appskier said, you don't need to be a politition to have a view on politics. third, for the punk bands that sing what they do not know, give em a break. although they may not have the 'intelegence' because they are 'ignorant by choice', they should still sing and preach what they believe in. it is at the listeners disgretion to decide for themselves whether or not they want to agree with them. no one is right or wrong because they're just the many views from many different artists. i mean, i myself am going to be going in the military as a cadet at west point next year and do you think i appreciate what some of my favorite bands are singing about? but you gotta tell yourself that that's their view. it's called freedom of speech and if you don't like it, don't listen to it. and although their views didn't bother me in the past, but currently are, i appreciate they're tallent and what they gave me before i changed my mind and started disagreeing with what they say.

''Have they been there? Have they seen with their own eyes?'' - you dont have to be there and you dont have to see it with your fucking eyes! it is prutty easy to see a few things if you want to with the internet and radio and tv. plus even if you 'were there' mabey you taljked to the worng people. on the internet you can (possibly) get everyone oppnion or situation

picture a canyone. not if your in it, cirtanly you get a close up look at everything but if you climb out, up on top of one of the walls of the canyon, you can see all of it at once and get the full picture of what is going on.

jaross, i think that it is time that i unanimously declare you 'the worst speller/typist i have ever seen... ever... in my entire life'

with that said, to the guy that said that punk bands should be able to still have a viewpoint, uninformed as it may be, and that they should still get to preach their ideas, i guess that is ultimatley true, and it should be left to the listeners disgression. here is the problem: the listeners disgression in this case is often poor. it becomes a case of the blind leading the blind, or in this case, the uninformed leading the uninformed. overall its just bad for society.

Sure, epitaph, everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, if they want people to take them seriously then they should know what they're talking about. and yes, I'm a firm believer that people should stand for what they beleive in. BUT, they should know why they believe in it. I've talked with a number of these bands and have asked them why they hate government, authority, and the president so much.. and do you know what I have found out from all of this? That most of them have absolutely no idea why, and they have no alternative, and no solution. The world has enough critics in it, and people are tired of it. Honestly, how many critics do we remember? How many critics can you name besides Siskel and Ebert? IF people want to be taken seriously then it's time they offer a solution.

Jaross, you're right. You don't have to be there, you don't have to see things first-hand, or know how they operate. But just for kicks, let's put this into proper perspective. If you wanted to find out about an accident that happened in your area, who are you most likely to listen to and believe? Someone who saw it first hand, or someone who saw it on tv/internet/radio? and Why is it that people who don't have kids are always ''the best parents''. They are quick to tell everyone else how they should run their kids, but they don't have the first clue. If you have kids, are you going to listen to them? Probably not, because they don't the first clue about how things actually are.

Also, your analogy is a good one, but completely unapplicable in this sense. You can sit and speculate about that canyon from afar all your life. But you will never truly understand what it's like until you have travelled it for yourself. Sure you can ''see the whole picture'' from news sources. But is that really the whole picture? How could it be so, when it's limited by other people and their report on it?

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

i understand what your saying. in your example i would beleve the person who saw it first hand but not for the reason you might expect. just becusae the news diestors/lies about things. no what you are saying is true to a degree but for me, mostly it would just be becuase the news distorts things. i would search for a few alternate news scorces and see what they would have to say. the person who saw it in real life might be able to give you every single little detal but often times, it will jsut be from there perspective and they might not know somthing that someone else might.
