Punch Fronts

Easier to learn off the knuckle of a table jump, or on a mini jump (small like 5 foot table)?

Do these need a lot of speed and air or can they be thrown with only a small amount of speed, on a small jump/table?

Im pretty sure there was a thread exactly like this not to many days ago...

Havn't had my chance to try one yet but im gonna try on a small jump... Ill tell you how it turns out

the other thread was messed up electronically, and it didn't answer the questions I posted

any help is appreciated

I would go with the mini jump. For me its easier to have a little bit of kick/pop to work with as opposed to throwing it straight from flat off of a roller.

He knows there was another thread but like he said it got messed up and left peoples questions ( like myself ) unanswere so hes doing this out of the goodness of his heart ( well im guessing he wants to throw them too ) and asking the unanswered questions.

so yea how much speed is necessary

Well how would i speed check, like id know how much speed i need to hit a lip and clear the deck of a jump, but off a roller id be really nervous for speed checking

i failed mine today.... actually didn't have speed... and landed on my head... actually, it wasn't punch fronts... it was more like... epic fail. Gonna try it some other time, now i gotta rest my ego.

(claim) I landed my first fronts today! got it on the third try.
i did them on small jumps, maybe 10 to 15 foot tables. i can do 3s regularly, and im comfortable with the amount of speed needed to do a spin on the same size table. however, i found that more speed was necessary for front flips that for spins (not much, but enough to have time to get my skis back underneath me).
basically, i took off of my right foot with my left foot slightly behind. i tucked pretty hard, and just worried about getting my head around- i figured that, at worst, i would land on my back/backseat, rather than catching an edge and slamming on my side like a spin. my first few i fell pretty hard, and to be honest, it wasnt that bad. getting the first one thrown was the toughest and it only gets easier.

Good job , im hoping to get mine tomorrow. On your first try how did you fall? forward, on your side, on your head??? etc

i landed on my lower back/butt, with most of my skis on the snow, then slid out to the side. after i got that one around, i knew i could do it, it was just a matter of enough pop and confidence in the landing. as i said earlier, it didnt hurt as much as i had expected. ive had much worse falls doing other things.

i went faster than i would for a 3. that being said, im pretty comfortable with spinning, and can do 3s (and sometimes 5s) off of pretty small features. After my first attempt i new i had to go faster to pop harder than usual to get completely around.
i would recommend taking in a bit more speed than usual, and at first, it might seem too fast. however, i think you might be surprised at how natural the flip comes around and how much the landing doesnt hurt. I did a couple more today, and they all felt flawless. be sure to let me know how it goes!

I want to try one... never front flipped on skiis, is it easier to start with a punch front?

I was thinking of a nice nuckle on a 30ft stp uup here...might give me a littlle move pop what do you think?

i just learned the other day, and i didnt do a punch front, and thought it was surprisingly easy. you can try a punch front if you want, but im not exactly sure how it goes. i think a reg front is just as easy.
if you can get sufficient pop on the knuckle it will probably work out. just make sure the landing is nice and steep so that you can get your tails around and underneath you. the reason a small jump is just as good is because it offers a lip, which you can pop off of. it is just as important to jump up as it is to rotate forward, and a lip serves that purpose (at least, it did for me).
dont be intimidated! you will spin faster than you think, just tuck your head and stay balanced. the falls did not hurt as much as i thought they would. have fun with it!

Was going to try them today but my ride ditched me because his brother is in the all-star game for JR A hokcey

I think I'm gunna try them off a small jump 5-10 foot table, I'm gunna throw it like a punch front though, like pop off one ski and just tuck.

One of my local hills has a horrible park crew, the jumps they make our just outright dangerous.

They have a decent sized lip, small deck and a steep small landing ( basically its just asking for someone to over shoot the fuck out of it, im sure its alreayd happened ) anyways although i do not feel comfortable hitting these doing any other tricks, i just realized that this steep landing may be perfect for punch front ( the knuckle is steep, it just sort of drops off )

Im hopefully trying them tomorrow, ill let everyone know how it goes and my adivce, wish me luck :p

bingo. good luck! make sure to post up your experiences, im interested in hearing how they went for you guys in comparison to mine.

I think im going to give them a go tomorrow, the only problem is the hill im going to has pretty small jump.

Do you pepl tik tii flipable?

Should i go for a normal front flip or more of apunch front but just off the lip instead of the knuckle,to be honest im scared i might over-rotate

^ I would say just go a little faster then normal and huck it. You cant really get hurt on a small jump like that

Yeah i guess you CAN get hurt on a small jump but if you know what your doing there is a lot smaller chance you will. Im assuming you know what your doing. Just put one foot further forward get a nice pop and tuck until your feet hit the ground or you feel like your over rotating. Ihavn't got a chance to try it yet cause i don't have boots right now but when i do this is how ill try mine. Ill film it when i do

other than knuckles or small jumps. wind lip and cornesis are fun to learn on. speed really depends on how big or how fast you want throw it. harder you punch. less time it will take to flip so less speed is needed.

yea since its small im planning on doing it like i would a punch front off a knuckle, and to be honest im worried ill over rotate lol. Maybe im underestimating how hard( if at all )it will be though

the jump i did them off of had a lot more pop than that jump seems to have- mine shot me almost straight up. it was about the same size, and i definitely think its flip-able. i would suggest going a little bit faster to clear the knuckle, and making sure you tuck pretty hard. ill try post footage of my falls later tonight so you can see what i did.

One thing that i keep in mind when throwing them is focusing on throwing my arms and shoulders forward as opposed to just straight down, sort of like a quick superman to a very tight tuck. I find that its much easier to get a good clean pop and a more solid throw that way.

Here's a quick vid of me doing one last week

I tried a few of them off a little jump in my front yard. I landed on my back the first two times but then i started to get the hang of it. The closest i got was landing really far backseat skis first and then sitting down. But now that i know the feeling of them ill deffinetly be able to throw them on a bigger jump at a resort

So i ended up not trying them today, im kind of pissed i didnt but no one i was skiing with skied park so i didnt want to go out alone.

I really regret not trying it though because i dont want to put it off, ohwell hopefully im going skiing this weekend so i will try then.

yo man, dont sweat it. as you said in a different thread, whats most important is being safe and having fun. the trick will come, there is no doubt about that. sometimes, its great to just cruise the hill with some friends, messing around and enjoying skiing for the ease of sliding on snow.
get after it when you can, but its def more important to have fun! post up with details when you go for it.

not for me, reading this thread made me realise how easy it is.

I just need to man up, i know i can do it thats the thing, i can flip fast and this may sound cocky but i wouldnt be suprised if i got it first try. I just need to ballsa up before i drop in and make the decision to try it, i realize after landing it ill loose my fear of it but its always the first one thats the hardest.

i just learned them off of the landing of a jump, just pop tuck, and extend feet over your head when you pull the rotation aroudn
