the majority of people shitting on tacoma don't even live there

talk to rach. (on my friends list), she is from tacoma im sure will gladly answer any questions about the town

Tacoma literally has everything required to be a shitty place to live:

#1 -Russian mobsters: check

#2 -Near a large military base: check

#3 -Shitty schools: check

#4 -Lots of black people: check (by WA/NW standards)

#5 -Paper mill: check

#6 -Close to Prime meth making land: check (see criteria #2)

#7 -Close to prime body disposing land: check (see criteria #2)

#8 -Still votes Democratic despite #2: check

#9 -Bridge that fell into water 80 years ago: check

#10 -More non Asian minorities: check

I go down there allot because my sister goes there and let me tell ya, there are no good looking women. None. All fat dike hipsters.

Tacoma seems pretty boring.

UPS football is awful, well all there sports are.

Yeah i wouldn't go.

FWIW: My dad taught there in the mid 90's, and my mom in the late 80's. Both hold it in reasonably high standing, above some other SEA/TAC area private universities.

I still think that the majority of liberal arts schools do not offer much more than an expensive indoctrination into liberal stupidity. I can find a former soviet national who could do the same for much less, albit with some of the more refinde 'reeducation techniques!'

I would imagine that the science oriented portions will be more likely to provide an actual, albeit expensive, education. That said you will still graduate into a jobless future with a fuckton of student loan debt. Grad school is just another few hundred thousand ind debt away though, and will upgrade you from the $12 bracket to the $40k a year range...

You can do the math though, but if you do will probably end up at an instate 4 year earning a professional degree after 2 years at a local community college.

If any of you decide student loans are dumb, have no DUI's, felonies, or serious drug and medical issues, I can get you the number of a good recruiter for the Army, the Marines, the Navy if you are gay, or Airforce if you are a bitch, and coast guard if you are just weird.

Happy hunting, and take comfort in knowing that The Economist believes the U.S. economy has recovered, and that we are only an election away from being in a very complicated and multiple sided war probably involving Iran, Egypt, Isreal, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The Aussi's will be down to get dirty with us, as will the English, and probably Canada too, God bless the Commonwealth and the Queen! the Indians and the Pakistani's are well overdue for a conflict, so I would expect them to join in the fun as well. China will probably keep its simplisticly-complicated nose out of it, untill someone disturbes their African Oil interests, which will undoubtably happen as War runs on oil! So in reallity I wouldn't worry to much about which overpriced education choice you choose, since there will be plenty of Chineese to go around and everyone will get to kill two or three!

And that ladies and gentlemen is a tangent, something you will want to get good at assisting your professors and TA's with.

Have fun!

...thanks?

i'm looking into the business stuff, and the business leadership program

Haha, I am around. Pretty busy preparing for a presentation. Hope to get out and ski Thursday/Friday, the weekend or so.... School and other shit has been taking up way to much of a time, have not skied enough this year at all.

I might be up there thursday, give me a call if you do go. I hear you on the school. Today was the first day I have skied since February.

Crystal is probably closest but doesn't give a shit about their tiny jib park. It's expensive as hell and filled with douchers but it can be very good on a pow day.

Snocompton is the next one, but it rains there a lot but they do have a good park, especially on the rail side. They have night park almost every day through a large chunk of the season.

Next closest is Stevens Pass. Good park on one end, especially the jumps, steep terrain pretty much everywhere else. Makes it good for both pow and park. Tends to consistently get good quality snow. College pass is $300.

White Pass isn't worth your trouble and Baker is a long ways away so only good for occasional trips, unless you enjoy driving 4-5 hours each way. Ride share to Stevens is strong from the Seattle area although you can easily find it to other mountains as well.

Good choice.

I'm graduating in a couple of weeks in Economics, quite happy with my experience here. Be ready for some challenging classes though. BLP is pretty good as far as I know, I've taken classes with a bunch of BLP students. Try some of the Econ classes if you're inclined in that direction, I got a lot out of them.

Don't listen to what everybody tells you about "how shitty Tacoma is", especially if they go to UPS, because 95% of the students don't even leave a 1-mile radius around campus. Downtown is coming back from some dumpy times but its looking pretty good lately. Waterfront is getting redone and is looking dope.

A bunch of bars and a heavy drinking culture, so once you're 21 there are plenty of options. Check out some of the more local places once you're of age (Corner Bar, The Goldfish), they're a fun scene and you don't have to deal with the 6th ave shit show.

The people here are generally relaxed, certainly a different vibe from Seattle. Yes there is history of violence in Tacoma, but it is nothing like it was in the 90's when Hilltop was hot. I've been in the North Slope (halfway between campus and downtown) for three years and I have personally never had a problem. I walk around at night all the time too.

UPS has good classes, great professors, but for me the social scene lacked a bit. Too introverted. Try and explore some of Tacoma when you're here, there is a lot of good food in the area. A pretty good hip-hop scene too if you're into it, they;re doing some cool stuff at Fab 5 in Hilltop with all the elements of hip-hop.

Good luck and represent the ski community hard!

Also I'd definitely say go for Snoqualmie. A pass there gives you access to their pretty good park if thats what you're into, but also to Alpental, which while small has some really good terrain. The backcountry there is damn fun. Also Summit East just opened up and there are some great trees there, plus it's really quiet. Crystal is worth checking out, awesome terrain but I could never justify paying 3x as much for a season pass. Also, lots and lots of students go to Snoq so it won't be hard to get a ride. Never was for me.

Excellent! I'm going into my sophomore year at UPS. I'm either getting a pass to Snoqualmie or Stevens... Snoqualmie is super close (hour and fifteen minutes tops to get there), but I've heard that the quality of the terrain is not that high.

Stevens is like 2-3 hours away, but the park is soooo chilll... See the Noah Wallace Spring Edit below.

If you're definitely getting a pass somewhere let me know, I'll have a car out there and am tryna shred all the time. I'm thinking Snoqualmie as of now because I don't know of anyone who has a pass to Stevens and I don't want to make the trek by myself every time I go up. Both resorts are around 350 for a college pass. Shoot me a pm!

both parks are killer. Snoqualmie's jib line up was on point this season and their jumps are alright by my standards. Stevens always has a great park with superior jumps but snoqualmie won the jib battle this season in my opinion. Stevens has alot better snow quality when the pow decides to come but alpental gets some good snow too. both (stevens and alpental) have pretty good natural terrain like pillows and cliffs, and both have pretty extensive side/backcountry as well. You can't really go wrong with either but If you want to ski 50/50 park and pow and are willing to pay a little extra, I would lean towards stevens. If you want to ski mostly park but when it dumps get out in the powder then snoqualmie would be a pretty good choice because you will save some money on a pass and gas.

While not a skier school in the tradition of some other places (MSU Bozeman would be an example), UPS and PLU (my alma mater) offer plenty of options for outdoors minded folk.
As Mike mentioned, Snoqualmie's your best bet for skiing from Tacoma. Cheap pass, night skiing, Joe Pope crushing it in the Central park and seriously epic backcountry at Alpental. It's only an hour and change away. Some folks opt for Crystal, which certainly has the terrain covered, but it's more expensive and there's still a large degree of assholery. If you really like time in the car (two hours each way), Stevens Pass offers the best all around skiing in WA--decent elevation to dodge more of the rain, fast lifts, gnarly terrain, decent jibs, the best jumps in the state, and oodles of epic backcountry.
Tacoma itself has a lot going on. If you like to climb, there's Edgeworks (by SR16) and Vertical World (downtown, bouldering mainly) which have student rates. All sorts of tasty food: Frisko Freeze for burgers and grease, Gateway to India for delish indian food, Vuelve a la vida to eat with all the local hispanics. While only worth one visit, the Glass Museum is neat. The Grand Cinema does all sorts of cool stuff and puts on great film regularly. Plus, Seattle is only 45 minutes out or a cheap bus ride.
Point Defiance is a gorgeous, close option for walks or just hanging out on the beach. Mt. Rainier is about two hours to Paradise; tons of hiking and year round skiing up there. Olympic National Park for when you want to get extra wet in the rainforest or on the coast.
One thing to know as well: Bolt Bus just started super cheap rides ($13!!!!) from Seattle to Portland, so you can explore further south pretty cheaply.
Message me if you've got more questions about Tacoma.
