Puffy Coats & the Siver Waterproofing Mystery

Now, despite the fact that the jackets are sick, most Siver waterproofing is pretty damn weak. But their puffy is somewhat of an enigma. Getboards says it's 3000mm waterproof, but getboards is incompetent. Jibij catalogue says 10,000mm, but that doesn't make much sense given that all their other jackets are 3000 or less. Meanwhile, the siver website says 1000mm, which is honestly pathetic, but why does everyone else have such strage ideas about the mm rating if this is the case?

I am officially confused. Please, someone shed some light on this. I'd like a puffy/thick jacket to replace my current insulated one which is now 4 seasons old, and will probably get one when I get some $$ available in a few weeks, so I may as well start thinking about this now. I'm not looking for insane waterproofing but it's still a factor. Opinions/mm rating on the uniform 2.4 would be useful along with other suggestions re: puffy jackets and where to get them, similarly steezy or no.

ALSO: If anyone knows where I can get an XL 04/05 Ripzone Deluxe Down in Camo for a reasonable price, I will seriously pay you money for that information.

If you are looking for waterproofing, do not get a Uniform 2.4. Cool as they may look, the first day I wore mine in a pretty heavy storm and pow day, the arms and a few other spots on the front of me where snow built up on the lift were soaked. Granted the water never made it all the way through to me, but it looked shitty and made the jacket heavier with all the water.

From personal experience, there are three puffys that I either currently own or have owned that were top-notch in my opinion, in terms of waterproofing, durability and overall steeze: Burton Ronin or AK puffys, Helly Hansen Code Down (aka Pollard Puffy), and Orage Brigadier.

I'm unsure of the reason why companies that make 'snow gear' even produce anything under a minimum of 10,000mm, but that is the mystery at hand.

When I tried on the siver puffy, it felt like some street wear coat.

Maybe there are different models of the siver puffy, that's why everyone posts different mm ratings.

I can't believe your not ballsing up and getting the orage woody print one jd, seriously disapointing me right now. Siver is only for style in my opinion, and i believe the jacket your talking about does come in a 1000, and a 3000 waterproofing, both of which suck performance wise, if there is a 10,000mm version i have not seen it. Orage puffies=sick and who doesnt like the smell of wet duck? I know i sure as hell do. Oh and waterproofing spray is not worth it because it makes your clothes smell bad, and not in the cool way of a wet duck.

Siver does not have the resources to make 2 different models of the same jacket. Vicious (Luke?), I fucking love the pollard puffy, but I haven't seen it available anywhere much less for a decent price. It's in a couple stores in whistler, but it's at about 350 canadian (whistler prices...). Also I was under the impression that it wasn't all THAT waterproof.

Orage Sceptre? Thoughts? I think it's pretty ordinary, but 15000mm is good for a puffy.

Haha, I've only seen the denim one around and it's still up in the "mortgage my house for a jacket" price range here.

Hahaha. I'm annoyed because there are no Helly Code jackets available anywhere on the intarweb, much less for the reasonable price of 167$ (Paragon had that going, but sold out) and apparently no one outside of this site has even heard of Orage so there are no brigadiers to be had. Seems Jibij is out of stock, too.

Every time Ive worn my puffy (some climb high thing, it was like 50 buck at a recycler store), ive gotten soaked. Be it from sweating my ass off, or the mostiure from outside getting in, it doent make much sense to buy a puffy and expect it to be waterproof. When down gets wet, it loses all its loft, and therefor its heating ability. I may have a crappy one, but I think you would be looking for more of a shell.

I have a 30,000mm waterproof shell. Thanks for calling.

I don't expect it to be THAT waterproof, but 10,000 isn't too much to ask, is it? Even just a thick jacket... like the DC signal.

Try finding a Oakley Hotplate, I think they're 10000.

Yup, you got the name right.

I've never been able to find out the exact specs on the Code Down, but I wore mine in all conditions this winter and never noticed a problem...it's far superior to the Uniform anyway.

I definitely agree that there is no way thay Siver has the resources to produce to models of the Stuka (one 'k' or two?). At any rate, I've heard mixed opinions as well, but still not sure.

Was the Orage wood print available this year?? If so, I'm guessing they didn't make too many of them. I'm lucky enough to have a beige Brigadier and it's one of the best jackets I've ever owned. However, be cautious of some of Orage's gear next year as I noticed in a quick peek at their catalogue that some of their gear has reduced waterproofing.

The wood print was available this year, I know someone who bought it. My search is turning up numerous 10,000mm jackets now, most of them pretty plain though. This looks half decent:

And I found a DC signal but only in black.

This is the jacket I will PAY for info on finding in an XL:

Also, if you know where I can get a charcoal planet earth Blaise pro model, or a dark Helly code down, that too would be excellent info.

The ripzones are sick coats for sure. I've seen a few dudes with them on and they look good and sturdy.

Not to mention that one is a 20,000mm/10,000g down jacket that LOOKS good... My brother has a component style 20k ripzone jacket, it's heavy but really tough. Pretty much unrippable material. I know where to get that same jacket in black, and I'm considering it, except I'm not sure if a Large is big enough (they don't have an XL). I'd want a puffy to be on the bigger side rather than smaller.

haha, that sleeping bag/jacket thing is very creative.

I think JD would look great in that women's jacket!

Bonfire makes great jackets...I've had a Bonfire Fusion and Optic pants for a few years and they are indestructible.

J.D, I could just keep on going and going, but to make life easier, just go to froogle and type in 'puffy jacket' and sort through the bzillions of jackets around the place.... you'll find one you like eventually. Unless you've already done this.... In which case I suggest you make a human sacrifice to the Puffy Jacket God, and pray for one to fall out of the sky.... I've heard that method is pretty successful.

How about this one, you would be SO illin' if you wore this on the hill.

Actually, take back what I just said about froogle... I had a bit more of a look, and unless you are looking for an aspen-mum kind of look, not much luck.

My bad....

I just got a Fate Fleetwood down jacket and havent had a chance to use it, but i have a friend who is sponsored by Fate and wore his everyday last winter with out any problems. Everyday from December to about April.

Hahahaha, if only I could pull off the women's jackets like Jon. That Bonfire one looks sick, but it's not a puffy... I guess it's pretty thick though?

Its not a puffy, but it is fully insulated. They are calling it the alternative to a puffy, so I guess that means its pretty warm.

Do it JD!

You WONT buy that jacket.....!!

I do like that Bonfire. And I already wear a bonfire jacket, it's nice... although the interior pocket ripped out when I fell and it had an mp3 player in it, that wasn't so good.

This sucker is 10,000mm, down filled, nice fur, cheap... big DC logo on the back in imprint... I like it. It's a contender, is what I'm saying.

i'd get a HH pollard puffy, nicest quality puffy out there in my opinion... i have an Oakley Hotplate puffy, and it's fucking dope but the waterproofing did not hold up to those rainy days in Whistler in January

don't take me for a joke, i'm no comedian. too many mental problems got me snortin' coke and smokin' weed again.

^It's ok, but overpriced and I don't like it as much as some of the others. Check this shit out... I can only find it in UK stores for rather a lot of money.

Hmmm... I found a store that has the Helly puffy. But only in Elmwood, the lighter colour. Not sure how that really looks since I've only seen the dark one in person.

the elmwood isn't as cool as the peather. and the code down is only helly tech which means it's 5000 mm.

next year all of the siver stuff has increased waterproofing of 5000 mm.

i love my uniform 2.4 puffy, its never gotten wet but i ski pretty much all in the midwest........i took 2 trips out west last season and it was still awesome.

11-01-04, the saddest day in skiing

get the north face one, crazy warm, crazy water proof, i have never felt any wetness at all skiing in blizzard conditions and falling repeatedly over the course of a day, the hood is huge, and it is overall redonkulously steezy, if ganstas in the hood wear it, youll look like the man on the hill, and its not very expensive, i highly recommend it

The northface puffy is the ultimate old person jacket. Either that or the patagonia one piece puffy, that thing is so god damn sick in all of its orange glory.

Volcom had a REALLY nice puffy out. I can't seem to find it any where, but one of my mates had it. It was soo comfy and had all this diagnol stiching to keep the down seperated while looking cool.

^Is this what you mean? There are 2 of them on Ebay. They're not really my style though.

Nah, thats hella ugly. I am yet to find one on the internet, I will have another look. It was from this season just gone though. I knew 2 people that had it. The stiching was like a heart rate monitor (kind of)

Here is a couple I have my eye on:

I especially love this - Sepia Venow jacket
