hey! im just curious if any of you are in, or know about the divisions down there. im looking to apply at a few of the resorts for next season and want to get in the know before i start. thanks!

I was a ski instructor for one season, didn't like it much. Its the intermouintain divsion and if you are going to work at a resrot i say Deer valley or Park City. don't pay attention to the other idiotic post, this guy is just jealous the he isn't even as good of a skier of a ski instructor.

naw, i could ski instruct if i wanted to. and I have coached moguls, but catering to tourists sucks balls plus most ski instructers are jackasses, but if you want to make money, i would go with deer valley. but the point still stands that ski instructers are arrogant assholes, I would rather work lifts than put up with that shit

yah and you dont get to progress yourself, just other people. instructing sucks, i'm with everyone else on this one. it's a waste of time. sorry....

thats some pretty sad stereotyping. you two dont really have enough experience to know what you're talking about.

Ski Schools actually make up a large percentage of resorts income and liteally keep it all running, not to mention sustain the industry and help with growth. I dont understand the hate but whatevs I think its just ignorance, sorry its given you guys bad vibes somewhere along the road, but its just another element of our industry.

I'm glad to have gotten involved with instructing the past 3 seasons. Its opened a lot of doors for me, Ive gotten to know tons of people through it, and its been very influential in my life and skiing. I'm stoked to be working at Alta this year and am looking into spending the summer teaching in New Zealand.

thanks for giving me the division name Atrau.

you dont get to progress yourself? i think that any time your on your skis is a chance to progress in some way, even if its not learning something totally new, there is always a chance to learn

yah unless you're swtich wedging behind 3 year olds, which is what you did for the last 3 years i'm pretty sure jen. and, even if it is a very intrical part of the industry, it still sucks. instructing is lame. coach or just ski.

O. O. C. FOR LIFE AND THEN SOME

you have no idea what i did for the past 3 years. on weekends i taught children, and every other day of the week (taught full time senior year) i was teaching anything from private lessons to school groups. i certified and im working at alta this year and going to new zealand to instruct over next summer.

you and i obviously have completely different perspectives on this, but i dont think you know my experiences, since you quit like the first month of the three years i worked there.

yah cuz i was better than half the people instructing but couldn't do it because i wasn't 16 yet. that and they ripped me off for like 50 dollars out of the christmas break time. the two years before that were lame too. the only fun part was riding the staff bus home.

O. O. C. FOR LIFE AND THEN SOME

yep i disagree with that. there are some incredible skiers in that group that neither of us hold a candle to. i learned so much from that.

ski instrutors at alta can suck my balls and if thats where you are going to be than you are a pro ho pro ho pro ho pro ho ilived at alta last year. oooo wait its cool cause when its apow day you well be stuck with your students .. no friends on a powder day. live by by it if they cant keep up fuck um and you cant do that if you instruct . so good luck with your new alta big head. oo ya instructing at alta you are going to need somthing to hold up that big head. cause allmost all alta people have one

ohiofreestyle

sorry but I do know all about ski instructing, as a person who has grown up in ski towns, had parents that ski instruct and siblings that patrol and I have worked in ski shops, as a liftie and have coached moguls part time for little rippers. I think I know a little about the ski industry. i have experienced ski cultures in many different towns but one thing I can say is that ski instructors anywhere are ignorant assholes. For instance, one spring day while I was a liftie, I came to my lift after skiing slush bumps only for a ski instructor to make a comment that I must have fallen because there was snow on my hat. When that pissed me off because it was so slushy that snow had sprayed in my face. to sum up the story I followed the instrustor up the lift challenged him to ski a bump run which he's class was all about. He did and I smoked his ass and demonstrated how you get face shots on a slush day. By the end of the day I was filling out misconduct reports because the ski instructor got showed up and his ego was tarnished. Sorry but most ski instructors ( and I said most, not all) are not very good skiers and they have hugh inflated egos. As far as saying you are workin at alta instructing, eat a dick, good skiers that are ski instructors work at deer valley in utah because that is where all the money is, not at alta where you will be probably teaching some douche in jeans how to ski because alta offers cheap ski instruction, but you do get some bonus points because at least you will be able to ski at the best resort in utah on your days off, though it doesn't sound like you get many. which is another thing that sucks about ski instructing because you dont have a set schedule and are more or less on call all season long. so to sum up this rant enjoy teachin some redneck and his kids to ski while I am skiing all the powder you can't at alta. Oh yeah, you can't smoke pot on the job ski instructing that is probably the worst part about it.

one other thing it is people like you that give ski instructors a bad name. I bet you train for the powder 8s all the time, huh?

i spose i could agree with you that a lot of ski instructors have huge egos, but there will be people with huge ego in really any sport you do right? But definetly the best ski instructors i have met, the ones who can actually ski well, are just chill guys who love to ski. it seems like the "cocky" ones are the ones who have something to prove because they are not as good as they wish they were. Then again i have met a lot of ski instructors who just do it because they love to ski and its a good way to get a free pass and get the oppurtunity to ski.

yeeeah im not even going to read all that or engage in a huge argument about my ego. whatevs, chill out.

ski instructors are the biggest fags on the mountain, they think they are hot shit with there tight little short radius turns and impecable pole plants. Mean while ill smoke past all of them backwards, fuckin pussys.

i hear ya, there are people like that. but im just a student doing something i enjoy somewhere new, this thread got a little more attention than asked for. sorry if i offended anyone, i wasnt trying to sound arrogant.

I was an instructor for three years, and it was a great experience. Getting people stoked on skiing for upwards of $20/hr beats the hell out of making hamburgers for minimum wage on a powder day (I think so, anyway). Being able to flash PSIA credentials at other mountains and get comp tickets to ride their parks was also pretty sick.

It’s easy to stereotype, I know. But none of the instructors I’ve met or worked with back East have been egotistical douchebags. Even the old guys are cool. Maybe it’s different here, but one obnoxious asshole can’t speak for all of us. Most instructors don’t wear tight clothes and think about stupid acronyms that will help them accentuate their equal-radius PSIA turns with impeccable pole plants on their down time, either. But why do you care how other people ski?

Anyway, I’m not going to teach out here because I want super flexible hours. But props to you skierclygrlie, and good luck at Alta.

ski instructing sounds like some progression for everyone. if someone is ski instructing it means they wont be skiing in powder or the park, thats definetly a plus. i dont understand the hating. People are just doing what they want to learn how to do better. even if the ski instructor isnt the best skier he/she wont be worse then the person they are teaching. So im sure progression is always happening to an extent. relax guys. its all skiing so get stoked cause its coming up
