america is a great country, granted that it has some problems, some big ones at that. but every country has problems, and overall i think the us has done a good job in its short history making it the best place it can be.

as far as the war on terror goes, you canadians should imagine how you would feel if 9/11 had happened in your country. over 1,000 of my countrymen were killed in cold blood because some lunatics disagree with the way i live. how are we supposed to solve that without force, kamikaze? i really don't see a feasible way of changing al-queda's minds. changing france's mind, yes, but not al-queda, because their hatred is rooted in their extreme religious beliefs that conflict with ours. all we can do is build up our defense and try to take down their numbers and make them fear us, if that's possible. im not so sure iraq was the best way to do that, but afghanistan sure as shit was, and millions of people achieved greater freedom because of those wars either way.

The latter's platform being founded on the proposition of increased wealth (not that I have a problem with having more money...). The bland, factual, unemotional approach you adopt by asking for 'data' is completely reasonable, but it just goes to show...killy's right, although he doesn't really have a point; you'd have to look beyond the 911 scenario to what it's being used for in this election: the prospect of further attacks, and the need for defense. Basically, vote for me or you'll get killed...fear politics.

To Me, Liberal-minded people are all about helping others, especially those in other countries, right? Didn't we help the INNOCENT people in Iraq by ousting an evil man who demanded crime on the streets and terror and torture to his own people? We are also building schools and teaching them skills to get back on their feet, isn't THAT help? You can't show up in Iraq with a couple of friends and bang on peace drums and expect to help anyone by handing them pamphlets, that's not rational. It takes an Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, different countries play an important role and so do their armies. You can't fight fire without water, or you're going to get burned and let's face it, your way wasn't working... so in we went and we are accomplishing a lot there. The Iraqi people adore our soldiers and thank America and George W. Bush. What exactly is the point, rich people make their own money... than the crack heads without jobs and with about 8 kids are getting the rich peoples money from taxes... makes sense right?

well heck i'm a conservative, but i still worry about cost as a secondary and sanctity of life as a primary. (strap on your skin) if you had two neurons to rub together then you would know that liberalism has MUCH to do with helping people. that makes absolutely no sense to say that it doesnt. even liberals will agree with me here.

^No, no it doesn't. You have no idea what liberalism, or for that matter conservatism, is all about. you just associate witha particular end of the political ideological spectrum.

Liberalism associates liberty with primacy in human nature. Thus, the onus of power rests on the individual, while the government should do whatever it can to promote liberty, and no more. There's locke's state of nature and war. and mill's harm principle, and progressive theory (Dewey) that fit in there too, but that's a lot of writing to explain.

Conservatism emphasizes the primacy of human ignorance and fallibility, assuming since we're going to screw up inevitably, screw ups should have the least negative impact possible. Therefore, we should organize power into smaller enclaves; businesses, families, churches, and so on. Government, then, should promote the interests of these small groups.

Those are the bases of the two schools of thought. There's a lot more to go along with each, but like I said, I'm not going to explain it all. Suffice it to say that liberalism has nothing to o with 'helping people', at least not directly interpreted, thoguh that sort of thing could result.

By definition, helping people has shit all to do with liberalism or conservatism. Just because they coincide, or follow according to some interpretations, doesn't mean that helping people is a part of either doctrine. That's like saying having a teaching career is a part of liberalism because a lot of liberals think they can better the population by teaching. I say it again: just because you can associate one thing with another in certain examples does not mean one necessarily follows from the other. Horribly fallacious reasoning.

And I'm saying they have nothing to do with each other necessarily, they just happen to coincide because a lot of people tend to like helping people. A lot of liberals do, a lot of conservatives do. So there's really no point in associating the two. It's basically an argument that you can't win in theory...but you've abandoned that objective theoretical view for a ''real world'' perspective, where this isn't even an argument; Of course many liberals like helping people. But it isn't limited to them, and therefore you can't say 'helping people' is a necessary subset of liberalism any more than it is of anyone else. If you can argue with that, then the conservatives and socialists, the major alternatives, are somewhat inhumane.

wouldnt it be great if america took their hands out of every, country, market or comodity that they are dippeing their hands into and pulled back into the states to live solely dependant on themselves. Build massive walls around the entire border and not allow anyone to enter or leave the country...become a totally self sufficent country...imagine how fuckin sweet it would be to not have to deal with any stupid americans anymore...That would probably solve the whole terrorism isuue. Anytime an american comes in contact with some other country in trade, politics, travel, they end up saying or acting stupid thus the world hates them.
