Pro's and their skis

How many pairs of skis do you think any given pro skier use per season?

I can only imagine that it must be more than two pairs.

Nick Martini told me when I was at jib acad. that the pros (for solomon at least) have different contracts and it depends on how much free stuff they get: skis, gear etc.
so im guessin that its same for every company

at SIA I was talking to one of the Atomic reps and he was saying how a lot of the guys like Jossi Wells are super tough on their skis and that sometimes it only takes a few weeks for them to break them. I have no idea if that is true....but i wouldn't surprise me.

But then again, in a lot of the edits, and in comp podiums, it looks like Pros personalise their skis, I notice a lot of Skullcandy and a lot of Jiberish stickers on the topsheets.
Which makes me wonder, if they were going to need a new pair of skis every few weeks or so, why they would go to all that trouble?

yeah but when your getting all the shit for free it doesn't really matter.. and most skis last longer than a few weeks

well.............first of all, stickering your gear only takes a few minutes.....its not like huge project that takes a day or something. Secondly and more importantly, stickers serve the purpose of advertising! A lot of pros will but stickers on their skis to show off their sponsors, its just a way of supporting your sponsors and getting the word out about their sick products!

You specifically mentioned seeing Skulcandy and Jiberish stickers on pros' topsheets. I wonder why? perhaps its because Jiberish is a clothing company that doesnt make any outerwear, so a lot of the time it is worn under a skiers outerwear and can't be seen easily. Skullcandy is the same deal....its not a super noticeable item.

for the podiums and comps, they probably have a couple pairs that have the stickers in identical areas.

i wouldnt think that they would put the stickers in the exact same place every time they got new skis. would be pretty hard to do.. im sure they have plenty of the stickers though...

i think they get like 2 pairs for free then after one of them breaks they get another one

so basically when ever they break they get a new one

Alot of the showing off the sponsor is something called incentives. When Tanner Hall wills something and he gets on stage and shows off his redbull what ever he gets money for that (at least thats how it works in most other sports and I doubt skiing is any different).

Id Say a pair for Each kind of type of skiing

pow skis

park skis

pipe skis

jib skis

all mountain skis

and whenever they want another pair they get another pair

also i would imagine that they have a lot of backup skis

LJ goes through a good amount of skis, id say from the piles he went through like 7-8 pairs probably more, but this is LJ king of destroying skis.

well invaders are pretty easy to destroy..

but wallisch said that he was only on 1 pair of antidogmas last year

LJ only rides chronics, but a few he did break were invaders and afterbangs but that was on urban. But he did break a few chronics too.

so hes a "chronic" ski breaker?

it really depends on what you do and how much you ski and how hard you ski. obviously when you break a pair you will get another pair. I am by no means a pro but i got 3 pairs... so someone like wallisch probably gets a ton and goes through his fair share, as well as like andy parry and will wesson, and LJ. Tanner and simon probably dont even know how many they get because they have unlimited access to new product

prolly 3/4 of the skis that you see being ridden are prototype or sample skis of a limited run (under 50, sometimes only a couple are made) then riders give their feedback. the skis are supposed to be broken so the company can see what needs to be fixed for next years line. riders go through many skis a season...

i am pretty sure that guys on here like Drew and stuff who aren't a full pro just get one free pair a year

i ski pow and big mt all year and go through about 3 pairs a year. not sure about park skiers.

the thing is i dont really like giving up a used pair for new ones because every pair skiis different and takes a little getting used to, so i get my use out of them but i dont aviod sharks like i used too

i herd somewhere that you just ask for a new pair and they send it to you. so you could have as many as you want...... that probably depends as the sponsor

Rocks in the landing, destroyed bindings from inconsistent snow in the landing...you have quite a bit more impact in a big mountain comp off a 50 foot cliff than you do off a 50 foot kicker. Unfortunately, most of the big mountain skiers don't have a contract that allows them to get more than one or two free pairs a year. Skiing is an sport to compete in.

You could land on a rock or run over rocks etc. Not neccessarily "break" the ski, but destroy the base and what not.

Im shure they dont get a ton of skis.. but whaatever makes them happy and they deff. have many backups, especially in comps, ect. Plus most of them are prototypes

well sometimes they don't have backups at comps, especially when competing at a foreign and far away country.

i remember when i was in Sweden watching King of Style the announcer said that Dumount's skis had been lost during the flight so he had to borrow someone else's or get new ones from the local dealer, something like that.

what i'm trying to say, pros need not to always carry more than one pair of skis, it's just not reasonable when travelling to another continent...

may i ask, why the fuck does it matter?

go out there, and have the drive to figure out on your own.....from your own expirience

I would have to say red bull pays for the graphic being that it is there advertisement, and prob. dose not care how much its costs because every photo of tanners you see a huge RED BULL on the bottom of his skis

And dude, its just interesting. Its a way more legit question than a lot of the ones Ive seen on here.

Well. I figured that there would be someone knowledgeable enough to provide me with an answer to my question since I do not really know any pro skiers as opposed to many people on this forum.

Jon Olsson said in one of his videoblogs that he goes through anywhere from 8-12 pairs of skis a season. He said it really just comes down to how many rails you do.
